Bewick - has kicked five goals and averages 14.5 disposals in the first six rounds. Not good enough.

People like to compare our small forwards to McRae who averaged about a goal a game, yet say they're not living up to expectations when they're about that mark themselves. o_O

What McRae did is irrelevant. Different game now.

Why is Maguire an option at a return?? Has he played a game in the ressies yet?? He isn't good enough to be rushing back with no footy behind him.

Considering how badly we've missed him down back and we're playing West Coast (Kennedy, Darling, Cox/Naitinui) I think if Goose is right to play he comes straight in.

For me, changes would be (if fit):
IN: Goose, Black, Raines
OUT: Cornelius, Paparone, Clarke

I get the feeling I'm forgetting one, but if I'm not, then this'd be my changes

Well that's just embarrassing, I watched him 2 weeks ago and thought he was very good, he looked composed and competitive. For playing a good game he was rewarded with the sub the following week and then axed the week after, whilst other players were afforded games for poor performance. Nice vote of confidence for the kid.

I wouldn't be surprised if Staker comes in for Ace this week, he has had three games back now and even when low on match practice offers more them Ace. Black will come in and I think Doc and Raines.

Black, Stakes and Raines offer a fair bit of experience and mature bodies to the line up. for this reason i wouldn't be dropping Clarke. Four changes is a lot, but Vossie has made a habit of it.

Out Ace, McGrath, Paparone, Bewick
In Staker, Black, Raines, Doc

Docherty was omitted mainly because he is in a competition for a spot with Elliot Yeo.He’s also in the mix (in terms of "fringe players") with Ryan Lester and to a lesser extent, Mitch Golby.

Docherty came into the squad against North in Round 4 (when Yeo was omitted), as Yeo-y had 1 or 2 howlers against the Suns, and the consensus was he needed a rest. The following week against the Dees, Yeo came back in the squad and Docherty was sub. Lester was named as an emergency, but didn’t play in the Melbourne game.

For the Swans game, Lester (being a 3rd year player) came in and got plenty of it.Yeo also had his moments (in my opinion) and showed plenty of dash.

The side’s also managed to squeeze in Paparone (who got an extended run against North, as he was subbed in early thanks to Ash going down early that game), Mayes (who debuted against the Suns) and Justin Clarke (who debuted against the Dees) over the last 3 weeks, so Docherty (imo) is still well in the frame this week.

I thought Ace was pretty competitive on Sunday, particularly given the service (for want of a better word) into our forward line, but I suspect he is destined for a long stint in the reserves.
McGrath is the worry for me. He looks sore, and old, and that calf bandage doesn't fill one with confidence. More importantly, while he is one of our more senior players I don't feel that it shows in the way he plays. He often picks the wrong options, misses goals he should get and along with Adcock is one who just bombs it long into the forward line with no thought for how to get it to the advantage of our forwards. He also seems to be played as a bit of a Mr Fixit at the moment but in my view really isn't up to that task.
It is almost certain Black will come back in but I hope they resist the temptation to bring Staker in too soon. When he starts to dominate at reserves level is the right time, not before.

OUTS: Cornelius, Polkinghorne, Longer, McGrath, Clarke
INS: Black, Karnezis, Lisle, Docherty, Maguire

Patful Merrett Golby
Yeo Maguire Docherty
Hanley Black Karnezis
Mayes Brown Zorko
Papparone Lisle Green

Ruck: Leunberger, Moloney, Adcock

I/C: Rockliff, Redden, Lester, Bewick (sub)

I'd more look at the fact that Hanley had to come back in and someone had to go out. Docherty was probably the logical choice there, given he played as the sub the week before. Whether he should have been kept in and someone else go out is debatable, but given we carried a ridiculous number of players with under 25 games or less we needed every game of experience we could get against the swans

For someone to just reply "Voss" is pretty ignorant of a range of issues and balances and think about heading over the lions FB page to unload one line gems like that.

On second though perhaps play Polkinghorne as that defensive foward and leave out Papparone. Do worry about Polks errant disposal though and Papparone might of got pushed aside by Sydney but the lads got goals in him.

Polkinghorne has just had his career highest possession games the last two weeks - and wasn't our worst this week by any means. Very unlikely he will go out I would think.

Time to make some changes. yesterday was unacceptable and there are senior players who need to regain form/desire in the twos.

Out: Polkinghorn. He gets enough of it but hands it back every single time. That. Doesn't. Help.
Bewick. Time to give someone else a shot at that crucial position. No where near last year's form.
Redden. Saw in the paper today they gave him best on for us - is this a joke? He was woeful and needs a stint in the twos to regain the form we so desperately need.
Green. Sub vest curse.
Papparone. Might need a freshen up. Like what i've seen.

In: Raines. Our only shutdown player and must play. *see below
Lisle. Reward ressies form and give him 5 games in a row to see if he can step up. *see below.
Black.
Maguire. If fit must play - Eagles are playing 3 ruckmen, plus Kennedy and Darling. Lucky them.
Karnezis. Voss must hate him because i just cannot see why he wouldn't be playing him.

Listen up Voss, it's pretty simple.

1.
Tell Raines when he gets the football he must always, no matter what, handball. Full stop. And tell his team mates to get around him for the handball receive. If Raines never kicked another football again he'd straight away become one of our best players. (he misses targets by hand more than any other player but let's ignore this for the sake of the argument...)

2.
Never kick down the line. Ever. We've only got one bloke on our entire list who can take a contested grab and he's been triple teamed since 2003. Play possession football and switch at every single occasion. We've got the skill now to do that. McGrath, Adcock, Yeo, Patfull, Lester, Mayes, Doc, Hanley, Moloney can all kick a decent footy. Golby, Polkinghorne and Merrett are absolute butchers but unfortunately they've proven they're too far gone to do anything about.

3. Give Lisle and Acorn an extended chance to step up and fill a desperate need for the team. One game is not going to give thee confidence required to come out of their shells. Lisle must play up the ground next to Brown. Cornelius at FF. Get one of the best CHF of our era to teach them how to perform, how to position and how to play.

Obviously our forward structure of going super tall didn't work last weekend. Papparone and Ace just don't seem to have the defensive capabilities to allow for that kind of structure. The question is which of those two forwards is better at dragging their man away from the other tall targets and more likely to make a defender accountable.

I'd leave Raines out again. The only midfielder I'd tag this week is Gaff and I'm not sure Raines is right for that role.

That's crazy talk!

On a few players in the ressies:

Staker - was terrible last week. Marginally better this week. He should not get a game until he can show some ability at reserves level to actually get and use the ball effectively. He is a senior guy who has hardly played for two years. He is rusty and does not warrant a spot atm.

Lisle - beats up on undersized opposition but continues to struggle against guys his size even at ressies level. Last week he was hardly sighted after Gorringe moved onto him. This week Walsh stood for the first three quarters and Lisle was well beaten over that period. He only got into the game in the last when they moved Walsh forward and left only short people to play on him.

For me the changes I would make are:

Out:

Cornelius - okay its time for me to concede defeat on this one. Effort might have been better but had no influence where he needed to be.
Paparone - only played in spurts the last couple of weeks. He has been given a taste and would know what he needs to work on. Let him do that in the reserves for a few weeks before bringing him back again.
McGrath - one good game in four is not good enough. He has always been inconsistent and its time for him to play some time in the reserves and let a hungry player have a go in the firsts.
Longer - team looks better with two rucks in it. I don't think we beat Billy up though. He is still developing and let him have a run around in the reserves this week and wrok on picking up around the ground disposals.
Bewick - has only had one decent game this year. He is not performing and there are others who are deserving of a chance.

In:

Karnezis - played up forward and ran out the game very well. I see he and Paparone playing for the same spot now that Mayes is cemented in there.
Docherty - named BOG in the ressies against the Swans and has looked solid in the games he has gotten this year. Should get a shot I think.
Black - if he is fit he comes in.
Raines - there are a couple of Eagles who can do with some tagging even if Shuey is out. I agreed with him not starting the last match. This match though I think we get a lot out him being able to shut down one of the key prime movers for WC.
Michael - he is not going to win a lot of taps against the Eagles duo but he will provide a good contest and get around the ground with them. He can also go with them in the air in marking contests which I think not many others can. Up forward I think he can provide a physical contest.

I leave Clarke in there this week. I think he could get a lot out of playing on the likes of Darling or Kennedy and those two do suit his style. I play him for the longer term benefit even if Maguire might be better in the near term (not a certainty given how Maguire has played this year).

I'd be surprised to see Paparone come out, he needs some space to operate and with the resting ruck up there I think Ace will be the most likely to make way. I hate saying this because I feel he should be afforded every opportunity to succeed (this would include have 50 games to prove himself) but I just don't see that desire in his eyes. He would be a good forward in a better team but he doesn't have the application when the chips are down.

Polk's disposal was woeful at times but he accumulated the ball, won his contests and did his part (better than 20 other blokes). The past two weeks we've seen him get a lot of the ball, a lot more than he ever has and now people want to drop him?

Justin Clarke was set a task on Sam Reid and then on the resting Ruckman. He struggled on Reid (although a few frees coul have gone his way) but made up for it on the resting rucks. Both of whom are big and powerful men.

I hope we persist with Longer and Lewie. These two playing oin the same side and learning the resting ruck role will pay dividends in the years to come.

In: Black
Out: Ace

There are probably a few more changes but it's hard to say what needs to change when the players aren't standing up and doing their part (or more than their part). I think this is a team that can beat West Coast but only if they bother playing. I think this is the most frustrating part of this season. It feels like most of the guys are hanging back and waiting for someone else to win the game for them. Brown lifted and willed his side in the second quarter along with Jed, Hanley and Moloney. The other just didn't seem to want to lift and when they did it was too late.

IN: Goose, Black, Lisle
OUT: Longer, Paparone, Clarke

Goose and Black are definite ins if fit, I feel like Patful and Merrett are feeling pretty isolated down back and Maguire is the old head they need to help Balance all the young guys.

Lisle coming in for me isn't because he kicked 100 goals in the last few weeks but because he is the only "true" forward that we have left that can do a bit of ruck work to help Luenburger, who needs to be spending as much time in the ruck as possible. Longer has been battling well, but we simply can't have Luey and Longer in the team at the moment because neither seems to be clicking up forward.

A Tall forward line of Brown Lisle and Ace is perhaps our most seasoned and experienced possible, unless you throw Merrett into the equation which for now we should try to avoid. These three guys need to work together all week and figure out some leading patterns that allows them to separate from each other and keep their defenders moving at all times.

Raines stays out as I feel Adcock can assume his role as the "tagger" like he did this week.

My from left field selection this week would be dropping Bewick for another defensive forward such as Banfield, to not only get another look him but to add additional defensive pressure in the F50. I wouldn't mind seeing Banfield play that defensive tagging role on an attacking HBFer, although his form probably doesn't warrant selection.

Team:

FB: Maguire Merrett Golby
HB: Yeo Patfull McGrath
C: Hanley Black Zorko
HF: Rockliff Lisle Bewick/Banfield
FF: Cornelius Brown Green
R: Leuenburger Moloney Adcock
Int: Lester Mayes Redden
Sub: Polkinghorne

I'd leave Raines out again. The only midfielder I'd tag this week is Gaff and I'm not sure Raines is right for that role.

Shuey? Masten? Hell, even LeCras when he's in the midfield?

They all have massive hurt factor especially re: scoreboard pressure. Raines's form seems fine and if he could quell one of those two (or three) that'd help a lot. I know they've developed their inside games but that doesn't mean you don't tag someone.
