Simmo said a couple of things on the radio yesterday. Duggan has done nothing wrong to warrant not being played this weekend. About 40 blokes trained and the kids who stepped up to get us to this point shouldnt be automatically cast out for seniors with runs on the board. Im thinking that is him breaking the ice for a few seniors that they might find themselves playing in the WAFL if the new kids on the block are bringing more to the side.
Hope he puts his money where his mouth is then.

Hard to read between the lines. I wasnt exactly sure if he was alluding to Duggan being a certainty to play or more Duggan being unlucky to miss as he hasnt put a foot wrong. The second point enforced the opinion he may play but its worth a listen.

Reading Simmos words and hearing them are two different things.

The word vanilla means shit to me to be honest

Luke Hodge would be the epitome of vanilla at the moment

The main improvement I have seen from our side is the ability to cleanly collect loose ball under pressure and deliver it to advantage by hand to someone under less pressure

I don't care if they are vanilla, chocolate or neopolitan - if they can add to the gamestyle - then so be it.
Lol.

If they add something to the side then they ar e no longer vanilla...

If

If that's the case we are one player away from vanilla midfield that might start losing games. Rosa for sheed. If that happens and we don't play duggan or sheed we have returned to the dark side as I think one of the reasons we have done well is our young players.

So if we lose Sheed - "we have a vanilla midfield"

And Vanilla midfielers don't add to the side

So Gaff, Shuey, Priddis, Yeo et al are vanilla and not adding to the side

Vanilla is just new wanky jargon to describe someone that either a) they don't like or b) don't have flair

Ha-ha.
I'm commenting tongue in cheek mostly.
I just don't rate masten, Rosa and selwood.
Throw butler in there as well.

And would prefer youth running through our team that's all.

There's going to be 3 or 4 players genuinely unlucky not to be playing

And with nearly a full squad available (waters, Mckenzie, brown, tunbridge, mcginnity, lamb the only ours), there's going to be a few playing ressies for East Perth as well

Apart from the guys with mystery ailments eg Lycett, Karpany, Waterman

That is amazing to see highlighted like that.
Great coaching and execution.

I really noticed it during the Richmond game. We were near the 50 m line and whenever Richmond attacked, I was panicking as there seemed to be all these unmarked players, but at the same time there was lots of our backs barking instructions and then using fast closing speed to shut down attacks.

So all the finger pointing actually means something, here I was thinking that players did that after missing a shot on goal, to take the attention away from themselves:D

Reading that article, and watching the vision, it does all sound very impressive & tactical. It just seems a tiny bit like the media over analysing things, like they always do. No doubt there is a fair bit of training involved to learn the method, but is it really that special?? It's just players guarding space and not manning up on players too far away from the play. Don't get me wrong, it's obviously working really well, but I feel like the "experts" are reading way too much into it.

Whatever we're doing opposition sides are going to be studying it to devise a plan to counteract it. The challenge for our coaching group will be how quickly they adjust to a new tactic when it inevitably comes

I've got confidence in the coaching group. There have been a few games this year, where we have obviously done a fair amount of work on the opposition's strong points. We dismantled GWS, and were able to stop any run the Cats would usually get, plus we let Richmond play their chipping game, but pressured them to make mistakes. Point is, I reckon it's not just 1 scenario for the defense in every game, I reckon Simmo does a lot of work on the oppo and works out his stratergies on that.

I guess we haven't yet played a really highly skilled team like the Hawks who could kick through our zone/press, so time will tell whether it's really that good.

And even if the Hawks are able to pick the web apart, it doesn't necessarily condemn the system to the scrap heap. We'll get better at it and having Mackenzie back will improve it.

Yeah I also meant more from a broader perspective. We really don't have many 'senior players with runs on the board' that would warrant special consideration over how they're currently performing.

Our senior players are generally playing well at the moment, but we are in no position to have this mindset that the kids will have to wait their turn while we allow senior players to degenerate until they decide to pull the pin

Selwood's not a dud, he just doesn't add anything that the others aren't already providing.

With the exception of guys like Fyfe there's a limit to how many of any one player you want in a team. JK is brilliant but if we had 5 key forwards just as good we wouldn't play all of them.

It's a positive to have a guy at Selwood's level on the fringe of the 22. Injuries happen and players lose form. You don't want to be scouring the WAFL trying to invent reasons to give someone a game when you're potentially looking at a finals campaign.
