You know we'll trade Hartlett for Shaun Atley....

I wouldn't be against it. Both players have similar output this year, it solves the Hartlett contract problem & it will help us keep Joe.

So if our set-up in 2014 with Carlile (easily replaceable by Clurey), Trengove, Jonas and Hombsch got us to a preliminary final and our set-ups ever since haven't even taken us to an elimination final, why is it 'nuts' to suggest that it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to revert to the old structure?

Howard (or Eddy, or probably even Marshall) is a more natural forward than Trengove. Trengove is a much better stopping defender than Hombsch. Hombsch is a much better intercept defender than Hartlett. Move one of those forwards into Trengove's role, Trengove into Hombsch's role and Hombsch into Hartlett's role and we're suddenly immediately better equipped to play team defence than we are now, as well as giving us a forward line which actually has forwards in it.
Good points here. I would rather a genuine forward in Marshall or Howard than Trengove, the trouble is he is our back up so called ruck man.
I have said before that i worry if Ryder is injured we are in trouble. Would like to see a player like Frampton or Ladams get some game time, the can play forward and are genuine ruck men.
P.S We are 1 tall forward short imo.

I also can't get how anyone can watch last weeks match and think

You know what Port do need more small forwards

We got killed down back by an excellent performance from a tall forward , as has happened a couple times this seasons.

Result? - ignored at selection

We got creamed in the midfield by faster and more skilled midfielders

Result? - We select 2 small forwards and a defender. I'm not convinced we attempted to fix the problem at all. It's also a coaching, mindset, workrate and positioning issue as well though so not something that's as easy as shuffling a player or two though.

Our kicking into the forward line was horrible as it has been all year

Result ? - we select one of our worst decision makers and kicks inside fifty in jake Neade , a small forward in young who has been horrible at afl level all year and while not a bad decisions maker with the ball his loopy kicking inside fifty certainly isn't a weapon.

Lack of a second marking target when Dixon leads up the ground

Result ? - we go smaller in our forward line with jake Neade , and swap ah chee for young even though ah chees really had more success than young kicking goals innhalf as many games this year while ignoring a dominant forward performance from a young up and comer in dogs and a seasoned key forward who has been kicking goals all year long at either level in eddy.

id go as far as saying we are 2 tall forwards short.
Trengove goes back and westhoff isnt a genuine forward. leaving dixon.... add howard and eddy or howard and marshall or howard andframpton or howard and ladams and ill be stoked

After thinking about Ken's selections, he has a point. Last weeks performance was that bad that it wouldn't have mattered who was playing. There was a lot more wrong than a few changes but it would have been nice for Howard or Atley to be rewarded.

Because we're determined to play this system even if the dividends are even more mediocrity and there is zero evidence it's even close to capable of producing a premiership, even on its best day.

Adelaide and GWS - after an initial period of confusion where we gained the upper hand - adapted with a minimum of fuss and beat our brains in. WCE and Geelong didn't have to play particularly well to grind out wins. Essendon countered it with a nuclear fireball. Essendon.

But something something Hinkley. Something something defence. Something something plan.

New coach please.

Bassett's our defensive coach. Do you want him sacked too?

People crying because Howard or Atley weren't selected are just pathetic cry babies who want their bottle.

What's with the passive aggressiveness, Janus? It's not very "stoic" of you to go around throwing insults at people who disagree with your opinions, is it?

And didn't you chuck a wobbly recently when people called you out on your bullshit predictions of Port's impending eternal dominance? And yet here you are again bukkakke-ing your condescension at everyone like we're sitting at a hentai convention and you're the master scriptwriter of the whole darn show.

Mao Tse-tung would be disappointed.

I agree with the post.

But if we like our 2014 set up. Then neade in is certainly a positive!

I could understand it somewhat last year. Contrary to the prevailing view of this board John Butcher was a garbage option. But now we have quality options all coming off big performances and solid form lines. It boggles the mind.

I don't agree that Butcher was a garbage option but I also don't think he would've made much of a difference to our overall finish. We were cooked injury/suspension wise and one player here or there wasn't going to change anything.

This year with the luxury of a healthy list and guys in the 2s practically kicking in the door it's definitely WTAF territory.

Hombsch isn't playing the role of a stopping defender. His role is to be strong in the air and fill the central role of a back three. Trengove could play this role.

But saying Hombsch could play Hartlett's role is ignorance. Hamish isn't an intercept defender - at least, that's not all he is. He's meant to play the sort of game Chad Cornes used to play for us - the defender who pushes up the ground and joins in the play. Hombsch can't do that.

Has he been doing that? Apart from the Hawthorn game, not really. But here's the thing - an in form Pittard could quite easily, and that's why Pittard has been dropped and Hamish stays in - Hartlett has at least played his role once. Pittard hasn't in any game this year.

Jasper is going to put pressure on Hartlett and Broadbent to perform. I think the balance is spot on. The only player I'd put in the forward line for a premiership assault is Todd Marshall, because he's agile enough to not change our dynamic. But not quite yet. Gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.
What does Hartlett offer that Hombsch cant?

A bigger tank?
More speed?
Better defending?
Better intercept marking?
Better ball use?
Better consistency?
More effort?

Or none of the above?

One thing from Bassett's press conference yesterday stood out to me, and allow me to paraphrase.

"Youngy's game against West Adelaide was too good to ignore. Albeit he played in the midfield, but at the moment there isn't a spot for him on the midfield".

My jaw pretty much dropped. What happened to the "playing a role" mantra from earlier in the year? If there isn't a role for Aaron Yoing in the midfield then DON'T PICK HIM. Same goes for Sam Gray. How about picking the best available player in each specific role and stop picking midfielders to play as forwards or defenders. That would be a pretty good starting point, I think.

The ability to push up into the midfield and not get lost.

47 pages for a changes thread is surely close to unprecedented!

I think I'm in the minority who are ok with the changes (not necessarily 100% happy mind you).

I would've loved to see Dougal in, but Hinkley has publicly stated he wants him to have a little more time forward in the SANF, which is not unreasonable. I think the positive is that he should be in the AFL side within a couple of weeks with good form. That will pose a massive dilemma on Trengove's position for mine. He is an excellent one on one defender but it may be difficult to fit straight into our defensive zone at present.

Houston for Pittard is a good call, and glad to see a senior player dropped who wasn't performing. Although Hartlett was borderline, at least he has reached some decent form against Hawthorn, whereas Pittard has just coasted.

Young played a dominant game, and it's not surprising to see him and Ah Chee continue their selection merry go round, but its important to remember Young has demonstrated he has a serviceable ceiling, and if he regains his form of last year he'll be a good player for us.

I actually like Jake Neade's inclusion.

Two main reasons; one of the biggest negatives often stated is his inability to get decent possession numbers - this year and especially the last two weeks he's worked towards fixing that with 20 touches or so.

Also his defensive pressure is massively underrated on here - 20 tackles over the past 2 weeks. The way in which Essendon easily transitioned from half back to a good entry inside 50 was one of the main things that killed us last week. We actually equalled them in clearances, but their outside play and running killed us. Neade is a perfect inclusion to help with this, and has been named in the best the past 2 weeks, and has clearly worked on his deficiencies. His selection is not the outrage made out on here, and if his for, continues to build he will make us a better team.

And now for something positive...

From the pressers this week, Ken has hinted at a forward line with Dixon, Howard and Marshall.

This year.

DISCLAIMER: I may be reading too much into his comments and this may or may not happen. Probably won't. Eh, whatevs.

I expect Young to play more midfield minutes this week than he has previously which would be good. A far more balanced rotation (fwd/back time) of Wingard, R Gray and Young would be very beneficial.

Haaaaaaaaaave you met Janus?

Judging by the tweets from Ken's presser - Young is an accountable defensive forward and Pittard is an auto-selection for Collingwood, irrespective of how he goes this weekend.
