This was the team last week:

Melbourne
B: Clint Bartram, Joel Macdonald, Jared Rivers
HB: Jack Grimes, James Frawley, Colin Garland
C: James McDonald, Jack Trengove, Aaron Davey
HF: Jamie Bennell, Brad Miller, Cale Morton
F: Nathan Jones, Brad Green, Jack Watts
Foll: Mark Jamar, Brent Moloney, Colin Sylvia
I/C: Tom Scully, Austin Wonaeamirri, Jordie McKenzie, Neville Jetta
Emg:, James Strauss, Lynden Dunn, Jake Spencer

Changes?

Its hard to know what the changes will be but i would say that Warnock would come back in for Garland,Bate if fit for ?,Jamar needs some support but who,Spencers not the option IMO but PJ is'nt as well, maybe take another punt on Stefan Martin! Finally we have selection headaches which is a good thing!

Tough week for changes. A lot of unknown's at this stage. Is Bruce and Bate fit? If so, who do you drop? How tired is Jamar after the Darwin heat? Did Morton and Wona do enough to keep there spot for this week? Jetta probably did more than Wona, so if Bate comes in, Wona misses out for me. Morton must keep playing imo. Warnock must also be brought back, as he would be a good match for Podsiadly. Moloney also could get a week from the match commitee, although imo, he has nothing to answer.

So after all that, this is what i think should be done:

In - Warnock, Bate
Out - Wona, Macdonald or Rivers

I feel our backline will need Warnock to stand Podsiadly. Frawley can take Johnson, Grimes gets Stokes and Bartram gets Byrnes. Rivers/Macdonald/Garland(we only go in with 2 of these players) can handle Mooney/Hawkins. I think our backline matches there forwardline quite well. Our midfield has to work harder than any other game this season or we could get smashed and our F50 set up must be small mobile and unpredictable like it was against Port.

After a tough match in the Darwin heat, doubt we'll get close to the Cats, but I still want to see intensity and commitment in our performance. If we do that, we should create a contest at the very least...

you have something against macdonald and or rivers dont you? both of them played serviceable games, wonna fair enough but the two are a bit harsh in my opinion.

I think In: Warnock Out: Garland. I think Garland just needs to get some form back and playing in the seconds and if he plays well should be a confidence booster.

I reckon we stick with Aussie, Geelong had an absolute nightmare trying to contain the small livewire forwards of the Blues and I think Aussie, Bennell and Jetta can really make an impact against the Geelong defence.

In: Bruce Warnock
Out: Rivers Macdonald

Didn't really want to drop Macdonald but Bruce's jobs on Stevie J in the past have been very very good and he can render him virtually useless.

I do have something against Rivers at the moment, no doubt. I like Macdonald though and think he will be handy for us for the next few years. I just don't see the need for Warnock/Frawley/Rivers/Garland/Macdonald in the team. Our defense has stood up well this year though, so what would I know. But I feel an extra runner against Geelong is a must, and I feel Macdonald and Rivers should make way this week. Garland imo has earnt his spot, while the other two have been our weak links in most games they have played this year....

If Moloney is out then I think Gysberts should come in.

We will be up against it anyway, its going to be a tough game
down at skilled - but its never usually anymore physically
brutal than other games, it would be an ideal game for Gyberts
to make his debut.

I like the idea of Scully running with Ablett, I dont think we
have anyone else with an engine to go with Ablett, plus it
will be a good experience.

Jetta has to stay in for has defensive pressure.

I wouldnt mind us going with a young, running side.

We are playing one of the best sides ever, so it wouldnt hurt
to play some quality kids and show them whats going to be needed
in the future.

I wouldnt be against throwing Gysberts on Selwood.

I rate Gysberts every bit as highly as Scully and just under Trengove.

If Moloney doesn't get his ridiculous suspension overturned and Gysberts does come in then Sylvia has to play the majority of the game in the midfield.

Scully, Trengove and Gysberts need another big body physical player like Sylvia in there to give them a bit of protection.

So common sense prevailed and Moloney has been freed!

Out: Wona In: Spencer. Jamar needs back up and Wona isn't at his peak fitness, combined with a longer stay up north should see him miss this week

Out: Rivers In: Warnock. Rivers is handy but not doing enough at the moment and there isn't a match up for him, Warnock presuming fitness gets his spot back

Out: McKenzie In: Bate if fit/Gysberts. Jordie looked a bit tired, he could do with another rest. Bate needs to come in if fit, otherwise Gysberts gets his chance

Out: Macdonald/Garland In: Bruce. Not sure which one to miss, but Bruce should be back if fit. If not then thats fine.

B: Bartram Warnock Garland
HB: Grimes Frawley Bruce
C: Trengove Moloney Scully
HF: Jetta Bate Sylvia
F: Bennell Miller Green
Foll: Jamar McDonald Davey
I/C: Spencer, Morton, Watts, Jones
Emg: Gysberts, Macdonald, Rivers

Nup, we need one more defensively minded player in that line up. Bartram, Warnock, Garland and Frawley arnt enough to cover all of Geelongs forwards. Wonna goes out and Warnock comes in. Jamar will probably need back up too, not sure who misses for him though.

Can see at least 4 changes this week but nothing to do with injury or form. Darwin game would have taken a bit out of the players and i would think a couple of our younger guys may need a rest.

I agree but I can see Bailey not wanting to pass up the chance to let them play against the best in the competition which would be a massive learning experience for all of them.

I'm in favour of resting them in the split round so they have a 2 week break which would freshen them up massively and allow them to play the rest of the season in the seniors.

BTW I'm referring to Scully and Trengove.

I would like Gysberts to come in also, doubt it will happen though this round. They would certainly bring in experience into this game before a young debutant to take on Geelong since we already have a pretty young and inexperienced team.
I'd say bring in Bate for Wona if he's right to go, because of form and fittness. since Wona is still building match fittness up and would struggle IMO to put together a 4 quarter effort against geelong. would be a tough decision though, since he showed some good things last week.

Ideally, without the Darwin heat affecting our players, the only change I'd do is Warnock in for Rivers.

We should adopt the same tactics as per Carltank and see if our version of the 3 amigos can work, Wonna, Jetta and Bennell (Kardinia Park - granted, a smaller stadium).

As much as Jamar needs relief, the midfelders are going to have their hands full. Maybe one of Jordie, Jones, Scully or Trengove (for a break) to make way for a backup ruck, although overall it seems like a backward step...

I should have specified that Bruce is to play a more defensive role on Steve Johnson. That makes Grimes and Morton the only not defensive minded defenders, but I think they really are adequate defenders. I don't want to go into this game being too defensive (all over the park). I want our players to take the game on, and would rather lose 120-80 than 80-40.

Head spinning stuff.

:p

We definitely need a back up for Jamar, this would be a good game to give him some rest particularly later in the game if we are getting beaten easily. Jamar will be vital against Carlton and Collingwood, i would be happing to cop a bit more stick from Geelong by giving more game time to Spencer or Johnson, if that helps increase our chances against Carlton and Collingwood.

Ive being saying for a while now that our backline is to tall; i would line up as follows;

FB: Bartram Frawley Garland/Rivers
HBF: Grimes Warnock Bruce/Macdonald

For mine, Garland Rivers play the same role, Garland can play smaller but rivers can play taller, neither win a lot of the ball.

Bruce/Macdonald likewise can provide a lot of run, win a bit of te ball and are versatile in terms of match ups.

These four players should make up the last two spots in defence.

Does anyone get the feeling we are in for a football lesson this week?

I think Bailey should use this match as a chance to get players experience in their most likely eventual position. Playing against the best will give them a chance to see what will be required of them in that position when we become a top team. I don't think we can win this game, so I'd rather not see an oddball strategy designed purely to contain or frustrate the Cats.

I know that sounds defeatist, and I may be proven wrong. But the Cats at SS, it's going to be a tough afternoon...

dont be stupid! everyone would rather lose by 40 than 120...

losing by 120 would destroy our confidence

This is a fantastic opportunity for our young mids to see first hand the best midfield in the business and you want to rest one of them ?

Oh I get it... wait no I don't.
Sorry guys, obviously got sidetracked and typed the same thing twice.

I mean losing by 40 points with the score of Geelong 120 v Melbourne 80 compared to the score being 80-40. Taking into account things like last quarter blow outs or junk time catch ups not happening.

I want us to take the game on and risk them kicking a few from turnovers, because that is how we play our best footy and how we want to play in the future.

I agree with that thinking master bate, but i was on the same thinking as BS on the points thing, thought you meant 40-80 point loss, didnt make sense lol
