Changes vs Hawthorn

He actually only played a fifth of the game and had 3 disposals and 3 tackles. Pretty much the same ratio as Matthew Broadbent in his first few games, although Broady would generally start as we had multiple injuries in the years he played. Give Ah Chee 20 games in the next two years and he may not be in our top 22 but he will be in our top 25.
Yep, we're between a Coral reef and a Rock Lobster.
We need to get games into new players whilst competing for a top 4 spot.

As we found out during the Choco years, that's not an easy thing to do but if we get it wrong, ...
hello again 2008-12

The then VFL should have gone Rugby style and allowed next to unlimited substitutions based on a Doctor's opinion.

I'm with you DT.... Worst rule they've ever brought in.

The fact blokes are clocking up games by playing 20 minutes of football is farcical.

The difficulty in player management and development makes it a double whammy.
There were days a sub would sit on the bench for the whole game and bot play.
IIRC it even happened to Tredrea when the interchange wasn't being used as extra players..

I don't mind the concept of a sub for injury, but make it for injuries. I'd go with 3 + 2 subs, BUT when a player is subbed out they can't play the following week.

Oh like an automatic red card! Seriously think about all the players we've subbed out since the rule's come in and most are best 22.

Back in 64....
Not quite in my case but yeah, not everything has changed for the better.
Fancy knowing that bread that goes mouldy in a couple of days is better than bread that doesn't.

The sub rule had to be changed as you only got to choose from 2 players and occasionally you wouldn't have the right shaped player sitting on the bench, plus the game is too physical to only have the same number of subs as soccer.

IMO the biggest impact has been on the type of player that is able to make a career out of football.
Some of the champions from the past wouldn't get a look in nowadays and if the bench kept getting expanded as some coaches wanted to do, we would end up with an American Football set up.

If I've interpreted this correctly the system would look like this:

3 players on the bench. If you don't have any injuries these players would play the whole game an no one gets subbed.
2 Subs, only used if someone is actually injured.
If one of the first 21 are subbed, then they cannot play the next game.
So, the subs are basically the travelling emergencies who are there anyway.
So its in a clubs best interest not to use the sub where possible.

I like it in concept, don't think it would work in practice. For example, we are playing a fight to the death match and Redden 'tweeks' a hamstring 3 minutes into the last quarter to allow mitchell to play the final quarter with fresh legs. We play St.Kilda the following week, so the coaching staff aren't too concerned about big red playing the following week. This is how you abuse a system.

From the prelim sides:

Port
Out: Wines O'shea, Moore, Neade
In: Ryder, Mitchell, Krak, Young

Hawks:
Out: Hale, Shiel, Spangher, Simpkin, Stevic
In: Rioli, Hartung, Mcevoy, Whitecross
Hard to tell whether we look better on paper now or back then. Wines is a huge out but is Ryder is a massive in. Stevic is a huge loss for the hawks though, can influence a match.
