As outside midfield depth Lucas isn't that bad. I mean he's not great but as depth I think he's acceptable.

Yep - and even if they were taking the risk on no one else failing to be fit, the emergency would have been Hutchings, if not Cole.

Someone has to travel to Sydney as a standby in case someone has to pull out at the last minute.

9 times out of ten that bloke won't play, meaning unless his WAFL side plays the next day and he can get back to Perth in time (not the case this week - East Perth's game starts while the Sydney game is in progress), that bloke will not have any footy for the week.

Hutchings has missed a chunk of the pre-season and missed the weekend before last with a hammy. Nelson is a youngster and will benefit from footy at any level at this stage of his career.

Conversely if Lucas misses a week of footy, who cares?

That's really as much as I can do to explain it. Do you want me to show it to the cat? Because the cat's gonna get it.

Just to expand on that a bit, even for home games, if East Perth's game is before (or at the same time as) the AFL game at least one emergency will be held out in case of, well, emergency.

This year:
Round 1: Colledge held over
Round 2: Cole held over, flew to Melbourne
Round 3: Lamb held over
Round 4: Eagles played Friday, EP played Saturday (Hutchings came into the side from the emergencies anyway)
Round 5: Lucas held over, flew to Sydney (presumably)

I think the fact that we're bringing Lucas basically confirms the fitness of the other boys. I doubt the MC would be thrilled with Lucas playing against the swannies.

Came in as a late replacement for Priddis, did his job, now Priddis is back... so he goes back.
