The biggest red flag for an AFL footballer is the one who cannot self-motivate when they cross the white line.

Proper alarm bells going off as these types will never end up being successful in this competition.

I think we know by now which players bring the effort and contest each week, regardless of opponent.
But performances like last week speak to a bigger problem IMO in that our inconsistent form from quarter to quarter, let alone week to week, is due to the team not all gelling and functioning as one unit.

This root problem goes back to drafting and recruitment, so Clarko can only select from the list he has has been given and I expect the conundrum we have is a quality of personnel issue when it comes to selection. Its why Daniel and Logue and McDonald get picked each week.
I’m really hoping in a way that last week was a mix of Freo being that good and knowing these are the types of games they have dropped in the past ( I actually believe this, they were very good for 4 qtrs) and us drinking our own bath water after a good win against a good opponent.

We have had a few opportunities for this in the past but really hope this is the time where we as a club and players on the field take the moment and genuinely grow up.

Lol toby the cabbage with the cameo.

I honestly cant believe logue keeps his spot.

Honestly, I wouldn’t give a ** about W and L’s after that. I would be making statements and telling every campaigner smiling and laughing you are finished, you are done. Pack your ***in shit and get the * out. Logue ** off, Dawson FB, Simpkin you wanna smile and laugh and carry on? ** off.. Blamires, You’re in and to the rest of you maggots. HARD AT THE AGGOT! Put in or **** off, alright lets go boys
Im getting flashbacks to Allen Killigrew

I don’t think the eagles are as far off their best side as some are making out, particularly in the middle.

Always love a debut, so go well Goady.
McCarthy, Duursma and Ginbey would be in their top 5-10 players. Ginbey is likely leading their B+F. I think losing to West Coast this weekend would be a far bigger indictment on the group than what happened vs Fremantle.

If we can win the next 3 games we get to 8-8. I'd say most supporters would have taken that at the start of the year.

Banch just isn't good. Wildly undersized for an AFL footballer, and doesn't have the X-factor. He's a bust, and I'm bummed about it.

Agreed, should have happened.

Given the injury history, I'm fine with the club taking an ultra-conservative approach with Goater.

Dawson deserved to be dropped. He was outright bad as a KPD last week. Yes, even worse than Logue.

The problem is we didn't replace him with another KPD. So we're just leaving ourselves exposed for... reasons?
Logue and McDonald were plain terrible last week and no way Dawson was worse than them two.

Dawson was hardly at the scene of a Fremantle goal and on at least two occasions that he was, both Logue and McDonald handed their direct opponents to him.

Both were routinely caught out trailing their opponents by 3 metres - despite numerous pre-seasons and games.

McDonald spent time on Voss and Treacy in the first quarter and he was completely outclassed - as he was in the last when Voss kicked 3, should have been 4, goals on him.

Whatever flaws Wil has as a developing tall pale when compared to his mates around him.

**** off Clarkson.

I loved the Gold Coast win but it was hardly a 4 quarter effort. And 1 week before that we were tripe vs the crows.

Yet all senior players from a stretch of 2x thumpings + 1x get out of jail win are safe and "backed in".

Starting to really feel we're going nowhere in the big picture with this guy.

He's Fawlty Towers, Hey Hey It's Saturday.

Great in their day. But it's not their day anymore.

It's incumbent on the players in the VFL to perform.

Realistically no one has been consistently banging the door down so it's hard to get your knickers in a knot over the lack of selection integrity. Players like Dovaston, Dawson, Whitlock etc. deserve more time to develop and haven't looked comfortable at AFL level. The consistent performers at VFL level like Fisher, Corr, Pink, Hansen Jr and Harvey all have their knockers too. Goater looks likely but why rush him for a short term gain. Hopefully we can improve our depth over the next 12 months through talent brought in and further development of some of our younger player. Clarkson future beyond next year looks uncertain, but i dont think the criticism of not swinging the axe or making big statements at selection is justified given the lack of natural selection pressure.

What do you expect him to say? "Obviously, last week was shit. The week before .. also shit. Probably only won because GC were shagged in the last quarter. And um.. Adelaide. Oh yeah, that was shit. But on the upside, lots of potential to not be shit on Saturday."

Paraphrase:

Our output excepting GC has been shit. We are giving a few guys who have been biding their time in the VFL a go. We want our players to know it doesn't matter who you are, you don't own a spot when you don't turn up on the day.

So senior players own their spots in perpuity then?

Might as well ditch match committee each week if nobody fired up in the VFL then and go out for a parma dinner.

I don’t think Stephens deserves to be included here. In many ways, he has had a breakout season this year. Having said that, he is a “cherry on top” type of player. He requires our structure to hold up in order to thrive. Our structure has broken down completely against Adelaide and Freo. Larkey has gone into his shell and definitely needs to lift. He’s a shadow of the player that he used to be, right now - for whatever reason. I was really impressed with his leadership earlier in the season. However, he seems to have completely rested on his laurels.
Larkey needs a good kick up his laurels!

I think you'd still be pretty upset if we dropped Logue, Zurhaar, Spargo and McDonald and co and we lost by 6 goals on the weekend. Despite last weeks horror show the team we picked is still our most competitive sans perhaps one or two players. The reaility is underperforming veterans will be phased out of the team when we have talent ready to replace them.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything except the Fawlty Towers clip.

Timeless.

Football games. We will lose football games.

Yes, but we just lost by 130... not as if we're flying with them in.

The whole gist of wanting excitement in the team is bang on IMO, we do actually need a spark.

Still don't like it, though it does make sense. Get the **** off the ground and go have your little dalliance with your old teammates laters.

So I've been busy and haven't checked into Big Footy since last week. I assume everything has been pretty calm around here in my absence? Just measured and sensible commentary supporting our team?
Their job is to play, and they didn't do that. Therefore, we've really no obligation to support them in the classic happy clapping sense
