obviously you dont play each team twice - but how can you say the team that finishes top at the end of rnd22 aint the best up until that point?
Does anyone ever suggest that the team that is on top of the ladder after round 5, say, is “the best up until that point”? Of course not, because it isn’t true. And it’s not true after Round 22 either. Maybe if you win every game by 30+ points and finish on top by 6 or 7 games, you can say “best up until that point” - otherwise, you always have to take account of the uneven draw.

so by your logic, the team that wins the premiership isnt the best team either - because they lucked into the finals by not playing certain teams twice?
No, after round 22 there’s a pretty clear line between the contenders and the pretenders. Leaving half the league in the finals, apart from being a money spinner, is also a recognition that if another 8 rounds were played a lot of things could change. If the competition went a full 30 rounds there would be a lot less justification for letting the 7th and 8th placed teams play finals.
In any case, news flash - the AFL competition, and any other competition that plays a finals series, is not about finding the “best” team. It’s about finding the team that can win that competition. If they played a full home and away series, like the EPL, it’d be pretty hard to justify playing finals at all. Maybe the team that wins every game of the season, except for the GF, is by most measures “the best team” of that year. Tough - they didn’t win the one that counts.
There’s only one thing you can say about finishing top at the end of the minor round and that is “we had a very good minor round and we are well set up for the finals”. Words like “best” don’t enter into it.

OMG u are not a Port supporter. All the Crows board discusses is how to get credibility FFS, at least our board discusses footy. And yes I'm sure Choco is watching, closer than you may care to think.

I can't honestly belive you write this stuff with a straight face.

Go back to your own board. You don't belong here.

If this is what you believe, why do you spend so much time on our board ... given you're unlikely to gain any credibility! :p

To this point I had only a suspicion that you were a moron. This confirms it.

It's called irony mate*. If you don't know what it is, look it up.

* the term 'mate' is also said with irony.

Not that I agree with what youve said about our board, but it would explain why you spend so much time here on the AFC board. You are desperately seeking attention and credability, and know nothing about football.

wont dispute that about rnd 5 - but after 22 weeks you do get a lot better indication of where teams are at compared to, as you mention, rnd 5 - & especially when you take into consideration that the competition is so even these days.

Yep, which is why they draw a line below the 8th placed team at that stage and then go in to the finals. If it was a full 30 rounds, letting half the league play in the finals would be ridiculous. (All of which I said in the later part of my post.)

Congratulations on your 2004 flag. You earned it. You now have one AFL premiership.

Now, you can go on believing all you like that being top after round 22 is some meaningful measure of "the best", if it makes you feel better about 2002 and 2003, and if it helps you believe that one flag makes you comparable to the Lions.

the system is flawed but geeez guys....

Captain E. the team that finishes on top of the ladder at the end of the round is the best team in the comp (the way it is currently scheduled) up until that point. I'm not trying to take anything away from Port or from any other minor round premier. It's still an outstanding achievement.

However, surely you're not saying that a team that plays the Hawks, Tigers, Dogs 6 times in a season, compared to 3 times doesn't have an unfair advantage. Why do you think we all get caught up and anxious before each season's draw is released? It's because we know it will dictate - to a certain degree - our team's fortunes for the forthcoming season.

Just merely trying to highlight the flaws in the system.

The team that wins the premiership IS the best team, because the current finals' system is essentially not flawed at the moment (aside from the MCG contract fiasco, of course). It's the "getting to the finals" minor round draw which is 'corrupted'.

Just out of curiosity, this is how the ladder would have looked (based on the last 2 home-and-away minor round games between each team). It's still pretty clear that Port and Lions are the best in the business. Please don't make fun of Adelaide! :D :(

Brisbane 23-7 (141.18%)
Port 23-7 (131.88)
Saints 19-10-1 (118.52)
Geelong 18-11-1 (112.47)
W Coast 17-12-1 (107.08)
Melbourne 17-13 (106.54)
Fremantle 17-13 (105.29)
Essendon 16-14 (103.43)

Sydney 15-14-1 (107.43)
Roos 14-16 (96.65)
Adelaide 13-17 (100.18)
Collingwood 13-17 (97.63)
Carlton 12-18 (75.73)
Hawthorn 8-22 (74.01)
Dogs 7-23 (77.27)
Richmond 6-24 (74.47)
