Probably as he didn't show jack shit in the VFL either.
But that was the problem this year - his forward pressure was really lacking.
Ive watched a lot of Mayne at Freo. I was hoping, but not expecting, he could get back close to that 2013/14 form as the pseudo-key forward that would complement Moore and allow us to have small, high pressured fwd line (see Richmond). If he could provide that it would be ideal - but also above expectations.
But really the minimum requirement was the forward pressure. Regardless of skills, form, chemistry or ball entry, that is the one thing I expected to see from Mayne in 2017. If he just provides that then he automatically becomes a bigger replacement for Blair - and one who can actually be a marking target. Provide that and he is an automatic selection in our 22.
The concern is that that pressure was really lacking at AFL level this year. Was it a confidence thing? Has just lost a step of pace that makes him to slow getting to the contest? Was he still trying to work out our defensive structures, or were the rest of the fwd line just so slack defensively that he didny have a chance in the first place?
What ever the causes - if he can't get back to providing that kind of pressure he will be seeing out his contract in the VFL and he will have no-one else to blame about these reports continuing.
I'm hoping that he develops a serious chip on his shoulder from this trade period, hits the track and gym ******* hard, and starts 2018 as a serious defensive pressure beast that we know he can be. Add a few marks and 1-1.5 goals/game and suddenly he can be an important piece of our fwd line.
Considering he doesn’t play at the MCG no.Just out of curiosity, do you think the shape of the MCG relative to Subi has any bearing on the way he contributes?

Good choice
I simply don’t believe the story. Clubs know that a deal like that would not be accepted by the AFL. Unless proper proof is provided by the alleged journalist, I say it didn’t happen.Hopefully the list management team and coaches actually got together and actually included Mayne in the discussions before proposing the salary 'dump' back to Freo.
It isn't football manager where you can just move a salary off your list.
To show our cards to the point we no longer consider Mayne to be an asset, but actually consider him a liability, but then not move him on is poor.
Not sure how those discussions would have gone down, but things like that can have a big impact on the psyche of the playing group as a whole and also how the players buy in with the coaching group and admin.
More signs for mine that our footy department remains a mess.

They were right to do so.Quite true as far as I’m aware although he did finish the season off ok.
Regardless I get the impression the club wrote him off very early.
Let's hope, a few prayers if you're that way inclined, I can't see it but would like him to stick it up a few of us including me.Here's hoping that Mayne trains the house down this off season and undergoes a magical late-career transformation to become a hard-nosed 40 goal a year pressure forward...
It was but there's nothing we can do about that now, the Club just needs to own it and not worry about could've, would've and should'vesits just a cr@p deal/trade, horrendous, how on earth it even happened has to be investigated so that it can never happen again, Gubby Allen phhhhhhhtt! Of course give him another year but, at some point we will have to cut our losses and move on.
Look it's nobodies fault but he isn't having a better year, he's cooked! for some it's 30, others can go longer, but sometimes it's 28... he simply isn't quick enough for the modern game and he really should be retiring but he's got a 4 year contract, it's not good for him, the club or supporters who want success
Is that why he was in tears after the last game? But it is good for his wallet.... And therefore, good for him.
Is that why he was in tears after the last game?
Has anyone mentioned that the deal for Mayne was bad yet?
Has anyone mentioned that we should get spud player X on an exorbitant contract coz well, we got Mayne after all.Has anyone mentioned that the deal for Mayne was bad yet?
