We know that he is a very skillful footballer by hand and foot on both sides, but his footy smarts shouln't be overlooked.
In the competetive drills, he made baulking look simple, and always finds space and time to execute as he wants.
He did fluff a few, but I think that was just a case of him dropping his concentration at training.
It would be a different situation with the heat on him in real game time.
Where do we play him?
I know he was recruited as a forward specialist with the ability over time to play midfield. But...
After more than 2hours of training he didn't seem to lose his speed like he was at the same time last year.
He must have done some serious work on his fitness level over the Xmas break.
I'm sure he can play HB and also put in some time in the midfield given his smarts and improved fitness.
I was expecting him to be left behind Garlett and Betts in 2011 as that seemed to be the trend in the latter part of 2010.
He is definetely in line for a spot in the first 22 from what I saw out there. Very impressed.

Watson tried to take on Yazz once, and failed. A man's got to know his limitations.
Yarran looked very sharp in the sprints and is really starting to show his smarts around a contest.
The MC seem set on Yarran off of a HBF/BP – He was exposed, time and time again by Betts – not realising that awarding #19 with as little as a metre or two results in Eddie getting the ball. Probably a good apprenticeship nevertheless, as Eddie truly is our go-to man and a good hit-up target to boot. Yarran was learning from one of the most versatile small forwards in the game at present. Yazz did make up for it with a stellar chase down of a gangly Bray, suggesting that at least his application was still 100% even if his discipline was not.
Just for now, I don't really see the fit nor the necessity for Yarran down back.
Armfield, Joseph or Lucas can largely take up posts that Yarran may be being earmarked for.
Having used Yarran down back in the pre-season may just be a ploy for him to work on the defensive side of his game.
When you can slot them through from outside 50 on the boundary line and create all sorts of havoc for opposition backs, I feel it may be a waste of talent working Yarran into what should now be an already full backline.

Just in case we've forgotten.
Do we really want to lose this?
That Adelaide goal is what this kid is capable of doing regularly.
Everybody is a defender.Yarran isn't a defender and he shouldn't be played there IMO. He will get found out defensively and that will hurt us. Of course he can run the ball and use his skills and speed in that position but the first rule being a defender is to defend and I don't think he can do that.
Everybody is a defender.
Youre talking about the back six right??
Footy isnt played like that anymore.... and we have stocked up on too many half back flankers.
We need to learn how to play as a defensive unit
What happened to the Yarran doco?
I would think Yarran's superior footskills mean those players couldn't take up the posts that Yarran is being earmarked for.Just for now, I don't really see the fit nor the necessity for Yarran down back.

Yarran may conceed goals due to his poor defensive ability but I think he could more than make up for this with his setup play. While as others have said his teamates can and should assist him defensively.
Pretty fair comments Effes but I think Lucas is now pushing elite level with his kicking. Wasn't rated quite as high as a junior but at Carlton, apart from a nervous first half in his first game his disposal has been an absolute joy to watch. Players can improve and shed tags that may have been previously appropriate and I feel he has since he became an AFL player. .I would think Yarran's superior footskills mean those players couldn't take up the posts that Yarran is being earmarked for.
We have Gibbs moving to the midfield; who else has the required foot skills to move the ball forward?
Armfield hasn't shown the ability to hit targets consistently under minimal pressure let alone lots of pressure. Joseph's skills are below average and he confuses his ambitions with his capabilities. Lucas has adequate skills but I wouldn't call him a great kick or someone who has the evasiveness/speed to play like Yarran.
