Disapponting effort but not the end of the universe

Nicky Dal was sorely missed and Roo is definitely still finding his feet.

Very poor team effort, really hard to find any positives out of the match :(

Very sloppy kicking on goal.

The roof has made some of our forwards soft.

Junk accuracy and only Steven did well but his goals came in the last when it was pretty much game over.

Not the first time poor accuracy has cost us this year.

We needed 4 weeks to get good with Riewoldt out due to structural changes. Now that the structure is getting a shuffle back to the way things were it's taking time to get settled into it.

Never good losing to Collingwood but that loss isn't such a bad thing.

We should still finish top 4 and I'm sure we'll be a lot better next time if we meet them in the finals. Collingwood were pumped for it and we looked flat and off our game. We'll learn from it and that loss will just make us more determined next time.

There's no way Collingwood are a 48 pts better team than us. Dal Santo and Baker were out and Riewoldt is still half done, plus we missed a ton of shots at goal we should have kicked and the Pies got a few lucky ones.

Let them enjoy their moment of glory, we'll be back bigger and better next time. Finals is where it counts and we'll beat them then like we always do. No need to panic.

Next week vs Hawks is a huge game! We need to make a statement after today and hawks are up and about.

I know its only round 16 but surely at this stage we cant afford to drop 2 in a row and lose touch with the top 2. Will be a big big game.

Pissed cause it was the Pies, but not too worried.

Riewoldt still finding form, Goddard in after a week out, no Dal Santo, terrible goal kicking and in general we played poor (credit to Pies for making us look average though).

Lots of improvement to come. We'll bounce back.

Hate losing to the filth.

They had courage, heart, determination, speed and precision... and we didn't.

It really hurts but knowing the boys are capable of so much more hurts too.

Nicky Dal is the engine room of our team. Massive loss.

Not too much to worry about honestly, shit happens. Only concern Im little worries about though is our goal kicking. Its not the first time in a big, pressure filled game that our small forwards have gone missing and couldnt kick straight.

Re: Match Day discussion Collingwood v St Kilda Rd 16

Keep clutching at those excuse straws... :thumbsu:
We played away last week as well mate... :)

Hey flog it was a legitimate news article that came out during the week.

Do you really think that was the Saints playing at their best ( I hope you do really )?
I don't think there is a problem with Saints supporters discussing the reason for a lack lustre performance on our F***ing board.

Good to see some acknowledgement of superior opposition. :thumbsu:

Was one of those games where things just dont go your way. That's credit to Collingwood though because it was their pressure that creates those opportunities. 1 or 2 cheap/lucky goals in the first half made it 4 goals instead of 1 or 2 and then in the 3rd quarter when we were pressing we just couldn't convert (my God I hate Schneider). Whole different game if we do. Collingwood deserved the win and played much better but I'm still very confident we will beat them in the finals. Would be more confident if we could play some more bloody games at the MCG. Lots of things I'm sure everyone will talk about on here that lost us the game but in the end it was just one of those days.
Important thing is that we come out next week and beat Hawthorn.

Lets not go overboard eh?
You've won one of the last five matches, hardly superior, just better on the day.

A problem for mine is unfortunately the midfield. Last year it was the midfield who ran for one another and ran to help out the other sections of the team, you had guys like Gardiner running back to help out as tall timber and running forward to clunk marks like against Geelong, however this year, they seem to be cog letting the other parts down.

The defense stands up in 1 on 1's more often than not, but there is ultimately little which can be done if our guys are trailing in behind the other mob, as they're already in a front & square position running towards goal, they're the dangerous ones and we're simply scrambling. Similarly then in recent weeks appear to be half volleys to our leading forwards.

Where has the crisp disposal by foot gone?

Once again did we lose the contested possession, and once again that was compounded by either losing the clearances or being decimated in the tackle count, today was the latter. Ultimately tackles are indicative of effort, the effort to chase, the effort to make the contest and the effort to impact the contest, this has been a rather reoccurring feat for the past 3-4 weeks. The boys need to lift their game a tad, at least break even when either end is falling down (this week the forwards) it's understandable if a midfielder gets caught out on the rebound if a forward fluffs it, it' another thing entirely if it was the midfielder kicking at the bootlaces of the forward, or over his head...

I think this loss will be great for us in the long run. Had we won this match and next week's against Hawthorn, in our current state, we would have bowed out of the finals without a whimper.

Last week we carried Riewoldt and Gram (essentially) and had enough to win it without too much trouble. This week both were better but still not carrying their own weight, together with the loss of Dal Santo against a better opposition than last week we were found out.

All it really tells us is how much better we need to get.

We were found out today because Collingwood out tackled us, they applied more pressure to us than we did to them. It made their mediocre forwards look OK. It made us make mistakes.

It was the wake up call we needed.

Its not over yet either. We play Hawthorn next week and we may still be a bit underdone against them too. It will be interesting to see how we react.

alota players down today, looked abit shell shocked whenever they had the ball. Also the decision making of most of the team were just terrible.

Never to worry, we've made the finals and finals are always different to games in round 16

A great win for us because we needed to show we can be competitve with the likes of Saints/Cats and for shoring up a top 4 possie. I think thats all it means though

Dont think Saints should be too worried. Had an off day and we pressured you greatly. You tewam looked sore and tired from GABBA trip. Obviously not a reflection of your real ability

Means you need to see Collingwood as a serious contender now and we are not as far behind the top 2 as a lot thought.

2010 remains fairly open with Saints Cats still favorites but now Pies HAwks and even Dogs need some consideration

Good luck next week hope you pump the Hawk.

Could be a big finals match between us later this year which should be competetive for a change

Anyone know anything about Roo's knee injury? Was watching 9 news and they mentioned something about a possible knee injury?

Your guys were playing really well, and if he can string together a few like that you're Brown may be better than his higher rated Lions namesake. Dawson had no chance against him ( and no-one else in Collingwood that he could really match up on either ). If we play you again I really hope that Fisher or Gwilt go man on man against him.

But you are right. You can't rely on the likes of Fisher and Gilbert and even McQualter making uncharacteristic results, and Riewoldt and Gram being well off their game.

Too early to guess how it pans out, but it would be nice if one of us could do the honours against the Cats during the finals before we meet again.

Just to repeat what Kildonan said at the start of the thread, it's "not the end of the universe".

We're not going to win every game for ever more.

Sure, a loss at this stage, particularly against the Pies, hurts doubly more, but it's only one game. There's still 7 weeks until finals and we've only played worse once this year.

Not much more than that to add. It'll pass, and we'll still strong contenders for the flag.
