Yes, I know, there's probably dozens of Tex threads...but this is post-comeback. Now he's up and playing, is this the same old Tex? Is it a new improved Tex? Is it a diminished Tex?

I confess, I've had a little cold spot in the pit of my stomach every time someone has said, 'Just wait till Tex gets back, then we'll...etc, etc' I mean, sure, in a perfect world, he comes back as good as before, taking up where he left off. But what if he doesn't? Plenty don't ever fully recover from knee reconstructions. Especially big men. And Adelaide has plenty of examples in recent times. Poor old Trent Hentschel is a sad and painful memory for all of us. Even more recently, Andy Otten has struggled to return to the form he showed pre-injury. Plenty believe that Brodie Martin lost his standout physical characteristic to a terminal degree.

So, notwithstanding the promising signs in his SANFL appearance, I watched Tex nervously last night, looking for signs of...well, anything that suggested good or ill. And let's face it, he was R.U.S.T.Y. When I saw him misjudge the flight of the ball in the middle of the ground and end up awkwardly lunging for it, only to spill the mark, I gave up thinking that he was going to show us any magic. A couple of scrubbered kicks along the ground confirmed it. But, on the other hand, he moved well, showing plenty of tank and what looked like confidence in his agility. He also brought presence in spades, showing us just what we've been missing in that regard for the last twelve months, getting in players' faces, shoving his weight around...boy, how good was that?

So, I think I'm relieved, despite the rustiness. Physically, he looked solid and confident. What does everyone else think? Is he going to be the player he was? How long before we see the 60m goals, the imperious fend-offs? When can we truly say, 'He's back!'

EDIT: whoops, just saw the Captain Tex thread. Sorry.

Strange how some supporters are prepared to "cut some slack" when "certain" players under perform after returning from serious injury but "others" aren't afforded the same privilege.....

Honestly Tex is a million miles away at present!!!

Because Tex is a proven high quality forward? He is also extremely passionate about the club and doesn't take shit from opposition. A fit and firing Tex is the 2nd or 3rd best key forward in the comp for mine.

What players returning from something like a knee recon have not been afforded some slack?

Tex is not a million miles away, he is rusty and lacking real confidence..
Listen to Mooney's comments on it as an example, he's doing all the right things and it just takes time for things to click bit by bit again..
You don't get over a recon in a few weeks, we know what he can do, you persist and have patience like other clubs have had to do..

I know of one recently resuming from a full shoulder reconstruction that was absolutely afforded no slack....
The shoulder recon had nothing to do with that, let's not pretend he was some Tex Walker before the injury or that a lot of people liked him as a player before it..
There's no level to get him back to as it wasn't a particularly high level.. and he's 31 years old this year..

Unfortunately not. I was one of the ones who thought he should have come in for the Melbourne game. Now, I'm not so sure. Looks a long, long way off the pace. Is running and moving well but his kicking and marking are both terrible.

I wrote this in another thread but my Carlton mate saw a lot of similarities between how Tex is going and Waite when he came back from a knee recon. Both players are smart enough to go to the right spots but as yet for Tex and what it was for Waite, what the mind wants to do and what the body can do just at the moment aren't in synch. His suggestion was for Tex to spend a month in the magoos to get some touch and then come back into the side.

Given that means Smack comes back as our CHF, we will have to accept that it'll be round 16-18 onwards before his touch comes back and he puts some goals on the board

Only he knows how he's feeling physically.

As for the mental side, it will take some time. You can tell he's down on confidence and just a tad tentative. That's to be expected.

Tex is the sort of player you carry through this. Double standards? Absol-****ing-lutely. And rightly so. Deal with it.

Exactly, Tex has already shown he can perform at SANFL level, what will another month at that level prove? How will it help build his confidence at AFL level and help him acclimatise to the highest level?

Quite frankly I think all he really needed was a goal, he got that late and I think he'll kick on now. I think he started to look more settled throughout the Carlton game. As has been noted, he's been making the right positions, finding the footy alright, he just needs to find his rhythm and I don't think it's too far off.

Having watched Tex live yesterday, He needs a lot more games for it to get back to the level of old, It could also be he doesn't understand the game plan like the rest of the team, But more than likely just more game time, He looked a bit lost a times yesterday.

Obviously, he's going to find form at some stage. The question is, when? My biggest concern for him has been how much the reco would affect him physically. I thought a lot of people's optimism as to 'When we get Tex back...' was contingent on him returning to the same mobility and strength. But that doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm just a little surprised at how utterly out of touch he is.

It'll happen, and the only way it will happen is by playing in the AFL.

Perhaps it's because those "others" aren't "pivotal" to our "future success" as a team, and "never" have been.

those lazy kicks off one step...aarrggh...dreadful...he's not fit enough for the new cap on rotations..could take 3-4 weeks..
...its just prep for 2015 now

And yet his kicking for goal was good in the 2nds. What's the difference? I know about the step up in pace and quality and also pressure, but set shots should not be affected.

I felt we did look a bit top-heavy with Tex, Jenkins and Pods up forward. Of that trio only JJ was able to get away from his man in the forward fifty. Both Tex and Pods struggled to shake their opponent. Tex did get some ball up on the wing, so he was working hard, as was Pods, but both are a bit of a liability at the moment once it hits the deck. I actually felt we looked better with Pods going back in the last, as it gave us a bit more run in the forward line. Tex looks to have lost a bit of his agility to me (saw his highlights pack on here from 2009 thru 2011 I think) and he was almost Jarman-like in his movement. I realise he's bulked up a bit, but I do think he's a little unsure with his baulking, sideways movement, etc. at the moment. I'd prefer he was more full-forward than half-forward for the next couple of games, with JJ more up field. With Lynch back in a few weeks it may alleviate some of our transition issues and help the team balance hopefully.

His kicking is a bit of a concern too...a few scrubbers again this week - and unfortunately in bad positions on the ground. Just wonder if he's finding it difficult to balance properly?

The commentators made a point of mentioning just how much ground he'd covered against Collingwood. I don't think fitness is the problem. It just looks like he hasn't quite adjusted to the pace of AFL yet.

I think he's moving around the ground fine, but just doesn't trust himself to clunk a big mark - so he doesn't really lead that hard into it or go for it.

It's a confidence thing. It'll come back. I'll admit, I was one who expected his movement to be at a reduced level when he returned but it doesn't seem to be, which is a huge plus :thumbsu:

I have absolutely no concerns he will get back to his best, if he wasnt moving freely then I would be worrried. He has too much talent to continue the way hes been performing, when it clicks I look forward to the circle jerk.

I always went by the rule of thumb that a knee reco is a two year injury. First year to get back to playing, the second to get the confidence in the body and form back.

he's still a year away from his top footy.
