How will clubs be compensated if :-
(a) They lose a player to GWS, how will the picks be chosen?
(b) they lose a player of 10 years standing to any club, where will the compensatory picks be?

(a) same as has been the case the last couple of years with the bands based on age and compensation paid by GWS.

(b) don't know. I don't think the AFL has come out and provided any details to the public. They love to play things like this very close to their chest.

I was under the vague impression that the free agent compensation would use the same formula as the expansion club compo. Having said that, the former will be based on net loss (ie players gained will be factored in)...so lord knows how that'll work...

That's because they make up the rules depending on what best suits their agenda at the time.

If Geelong lost Trent West to GWS at the end of the year what sort of compensation could they expect? I was thinking probably a first rounder, like Ward, he'd have to be worth more then Palmer who was an end of first round pick. Or will it depend entirely on the contract he gets offered?

It would be based on West's age (25) and the amount of his contract. No way is West getting the kind of contract that Ward got. If Geelong got an end of first rounder they would be doing exceptionally well. I think a lower pick than that would be most likely. Brennan, Rischitelli, Harbrow, Bock all brought back end of first round picks for their respective clubs and all are quite a bit better players than West and would be on 600k or more which is likely to be a lot more than Trent will demand.

If the Saints were to lose someone like Goddard, how would they be adequately compensated? He would probably take over as Captain of GWS.

Trent West?

End of second round, surely. End of first round is WAY overs, no-one would offer up that pick to trade for him, and (Brown excepted, who was ridiculous overs) typically the compensation offered is less than what you could get for the player on the open market (Bock, Ablett).

GWS have to cut their list back this year by 4 (?) players. They will already have 3 (?) top 25 picks and will pick up at least another two first rounders for the mini-draft picks.

How will they find 8-10 players to delist? Unactivated compo picks will be very valuable you would think.

I agree he's not worth that on the open market (even though talls carry good value) but I thought the compo was based on age and contract yes? Well he's about the same age as Rischa was, and no doubt it would take the same contract size (i.e. around 500-600) from GWS for him to be prepared to move, so I would have thought the compo would therefore be about the same.

But the afl is so subjective and secretive with these things that you can never really know.

Id like a list of all the players and what the AFL allocated for them . There is no way West is an end of 2nd Rd when guys like Brown was end 1st round. The logic to comp picks is of the AFL's making, when the Scully is equal to Ablett , and Brown is equal to Bock , I can't see how any player , recruited on very good money , with several years ahead of them would be less than an end of R1

No problem for the GWS to shed players

Older guys like Brogan, Mcdonald, Cornes won't go around again.

Power will be doubtful.

Clifton can't get a gig.

And there will be younger players who haven't adapted to an AFL environment.

I'd say end of second rd. We got end of first round for Brennan and Risky(who was our best and fairest)
But who knows with the AFL.

No they don't. GWS don't have to cut players until 2015. This is different to GC, who do have to start cutting.

2013 - 44-50 senior list, nine rookies with $640,000 - $1m TPP extra allowance;
2014 - 44-50 senior list, nine rookies with $640,000 - $1m TPP extra allowance;
2015 - 44-48 senior list, nine rookies with $640k - $880k TPP extra allowance;

Trent West is a back up ruckman. Worth a 3rd selection if he was traded

Certainly not worth a 1st.

2nd rounder max IMO

Worth is irrelevant , its not just a matter of opinion on his talent , its what system says he corresponds to , calculated on contract , age , talent , achievement , marketability.....

If it was just worth , would Scully be compensated the same as Ablett?

He will fall into the area of an end of R1 if he gets offered a substantial contract.And why without that type of contract.

Ablett is far far better than Scully, but there contracts were the same (basicly) and because Scully was drafted no. 1 less than 4 years ago it comes into the calculation for compo. No one has ever said the players are currently as good, melbourne lost a very good player 12 years before retirement, Geelong lost an elite one 5 years early.

Also West is at best 2nd rounder compo. Average player.

If West is an average player , which I will not dispute. Scully is less than average. He would not be in GWS's best 10 mids where players are picked is almost meaningless once on a list and he has a heap of talent at that club. IMO Melbourne got a get out jail free card losing Scully. The way he has been playing it would have meant another miss for a #1 pick where as they picked up 2 comp picks , another chance to get it right.

As far as Scully goes for GWS , 12 years is only a theory and 5 years for Ablett likewize. Rightnow it id bet on Scully not lasting 12 years , he will be swamped by a much better group of kids or he could end up like Cooney , he has already had knee issues. Ablett carries a side on his back. Imagine Sculy at GC , he would be another kid Ablett would be carrying , not someone who pulls his weight.

The one thing that lend credence to West being rated unders is Ward. Compare Scully to Ward and the Dogs were given a huge duck shove. Ward =Captain , played hard etc , has more than pulled his weight and is only 12 months older.

Certainly not worth a 1st.

It's not about the ability of the player (perceived or actual) it's based on the age and size of the contract, unless they've shifted the goalposts again.

Based on that, he would be likely to be a 1st rounder.

Agreed, we got very lucky. But the way the compo is calculated meant the AFL had to give Melbourne max compo. He was a no 1 draft pick that got paid massive overs on a long term deal.
