Showing us some cards ahead of the Ashes?

WTF are these 2 doing here? Seriously, how does Johnson get a contract ahead of Bird ffs?

I won't read too much into many of the others... to look at that list, it seems as though ODIs have been rated a bit more highly than in the last couple of years.

Cricket Tasmania would be over the moon with that.

CA always are bowler heavy with squads and contract lists.

Our depth in batting is not there, but it's a bit of a chicken or egg argument on the contracts, should they invest in our batting depth like Khawaja, Smith etc and give them a contract (and reduce the incentive for them to chase $$$ in T20) or should they be made to come out and have a Ponting style shield season and threaten a 1000 runs in a season to earn the contract?

Apart from that, probably would have given one to Henriques ahead of Cummins. Cummins should come back through the shield and not worry about international cricket until his body is right.

Maxwell over Smith and Henriques seems a little odd. Pleased to see Harris still on there and I think Hilf's retention points to an Ashes place for him. Doherty is bloody lucky, and injury free I think Andrew McDonald would be on there as well.
I read this morning that Starc is going to be on a cool million a year after 9 Tests. That's a lot of money for a guy who hasn't even really made sure of his place in the XI.

I thought the point of Doherty was mainly ODIs?

Cricket Australia want full control of what Pat Cummins does, which is why he'll get contracts for the next few years, even if he doesn't play all that much.

Bird VERY stiff there. Might not play another test? Faulkner and Hilf I am surprised about as a Tasmanian but not complaining. Also confirms they will be taking Haddin and not Paine/Nevill/Hartley to the Ashes.

Cummins was the other one that surprises me, needs to get on the park before getting a contract. Harris has more runs on the board in that regard

Only a few blokes that didn't play test cricket in the last year, Bailey the T20 and part time ODI captain, Faulkner the bolter, McKay the ODI player of the year and the injury prone Harris and Cummins. so the list makes sense really.

Where the hell is Fawed Ahmed's Australian passport? Brendan O'Connor was born in England man, did you know that? This could be some sort of dastardly Ashes plot.
Ahmed was even Tweeting about footy on the weekend, that's good enough for me, he's one of us.

Starc hasn't secured his place in the Test XI, but he's arguably one of the best T20 and ODI bowlers in the world.

Further evidence that Usman Khawaja is the most screwed man in Australian cricket.

Drag him around for a summer and refuse to play him so he loses his form and his confidence.

Then fail to even give him a contract for his efforts. Even moreso than Bird, he should feel absolutely aggrieved. I reckon that's a disgraceful snub.

Does Bird's lack of a contract mean he's unlikely for the Ashes?

I reckon it does - as I suggested above, they've shown their hand for the Ashes in giving Harris, Johnson and Hilfenhaus contracts ahead of him.

I don't really have any major issues with that list.

Cummins is an odd one. I guess it allows CA to withhold an NOC for various T20 tournaments if necessary, but it would seem they are still looking to fast-track him.

Bird and Smith will probably get upgraded through the coming year. Particularly Smith, who I would guess is likely to feature in one day games.

McKay, Doherty, Maxwell clearly are there for limited overs and not Tests.

Hilfenhaus somewhat lucky in my view, but as Gough has said maybe it means they are looking to take him to England. Its hard to tell from the CA streams, but to me he looked to still be bowling that little bit short and maybe low-arm when I saw him in the Shield.
Khawaja unlucky, and has every right to kick the selectors in the nuts.

The list of players has just been announced.

George Bailey TAS 30
Based on short form cricket I guess. Couldn't be for his Shield average!

Michael Clarke NSW 32
No brainer there.

Ed Cowan TAS 30
An age that matches his average. Predicting this will be his last contract.

Patrick Cummins NSW 19
Who??? Oh him, right. Is he at least jogging yet?

Xavier Doherty TAS 30
Keeping the seat warm for Agar.

James Faulkner TAS 22
Classic bits'n'pieces cricketer. O.K for limited overs but nowhere near test quality.

Brad Haddin NSW 35
CA must be getting seriously concerned with Wade's form to have this man on the list.

Ryan Harris QLD 33
Finally a smart choice. Every 2nd test match and no ODI/T20 crap please.

Ben Hilfenhaus TAS 30
Geez Bird picked a bad time to get injured. Like Doherty, just keeping the seat warm for someone better.

Phillip Hughes SA 24
Pretender. But I suppose we have to have at least *some* batsmen on the list.

Mitchell Johnson WA 31
Age 31 and he still sprays it like an alley cat in rutting season. Should not be ahead of Bird.

Nathan Lyon SA 25
Done enough. Just.

Glenn Maxwell VIC 24
Oh come on CA you're just trolling us now.

Clint McKay VIC 30
As long as he's just in for short form stuff and nowhere near our test squad.

James Pattinson VIC 22
Yep. Gun. Currently our best quick.

Peter Siddle VIC 28
Definitely earned it. In the fantasyland where everyone of our quicks are fit he's a borderline choice, but that's just a dream so his durability is valuable.

Mitchell Starc NSW 23
Breakout season. Moved ahead of Johnson as the l/h quick, handy no.8.

Matthew Wade VIC 25
Jury is out. Verdict to be returned in 12 months.

David Warner NSW 26
See Wade.

Shane Watson NSW 31
Must be on the list for his captaincy skills.

20 is far too many. Too many getting big coin that they don't deserve. Its like the Melbourne AFL club paying 100% of their salary cap for continued dud performances.

I think 20 is ok. They tried to trim it to 17 last year and it doesn't really work across 3 formats. You had Cowan not get a contract initially, then play every test for Australia. Taking out the debate of Cowan's ability and merit in the side, that's an issue because Cowan had to be contracted by Tasmania which means there is some kid in Tasmania (or NSW :p) that is missing out on a domestic contract for a guy that is not even playing domestic cricket. Not great for development paths.

Some of these players will easily qualify for a contract for playing ODI/T2o like Baily/McKay/Maxwell/Doherty. I still think 20 is too many and should have to earn a contract upgrade.

Faulkner would be a happy man. They obviously have him in as a ODI/T20 player for the next 12 months (good choice too). Could even crack a test if they still want an all rounder. Johnson lucky to survive in my opinion as i dont think he is in our best side in any of the formats (starc overtaken him in all 3).

What i dont like is the fact Starc could earn $1million. Sure he may play all 3 formats of the game but most of the players deserve to be on minimum contracts ($250k i think) plus match payments. Surely match payments arnt that high?

Players like him, Wade, Warner, Hughes etc need to earn their money and not have it handed to them on a plate. It would be like paying a 3rd year AFL player 1million a season.

Shocked that Hilfy got a contract ahead of Bird. If we don't play Bird in the Ashes we're screwed even more than we already are.

Why is Haddin getting a contract? He'll go on the plane to England but shouldn't get any games over there. What's he being paid for?

And Maxwell - lol.
