It was always odd that pick 2 (after the 20% discount) is worth the same as apparently pick 18, 40, 41, 43, 57 and 59 or some ridiculous shit like that. No team would ever do that trade but it was considered sufficient to match the true cost of pick 2 (yes I am moaning about Will Ashcroft, gun player, all the best to him, hope he helps Brisbane demolish Geelong this weekend but Brisbane paid a low price for him).
Can you believe it was actually worse than this?

WTAF was the AFL thinking...

(also LOL at losing pick 41 to gain pick 41)

FWIW I'm actually supporting Geelong this weekend just to spite Brisbane finishing top 4/winning flags and still getting 2 x Ashcrofts and Annable in a months' time.

At least Geelong's cheating is done in secrecy unlike Brisbane's AFL-sanctioned cheating.
Geelong have benifited plenty from F/S over the last 2 decades, not to mention getting Bowes, half his salary paid and pick 7 for nix.

They've both rorted the system over the years. Geelong posters don't jump on here to tell us how wrong we are which tips the balance their way, but they're also Victorian and their coach is a prick. Fages comes across as everyone's lovable Grandpa. Zorko is a kent but also took Mason Cox's sunnies.

Brissy will also make sure we get Pick 2 so I'm on the Brissy bandwagon.

This is a good point actually, and I usually would a) automatically support the non Vic team and b) automatically support against Geelong

But they're kinda like the kid who're living near the school but not boarding there like the other Vic teams, and have Mission Impossibled into the teacher's office at night, scanned the test answers, wiped for fingerprints and put up such a bravado of denial it's respectable. Built an entire operation around maximising then hiding their circumstances.

Brisbane are like the kid who've just caught the bus in and found the teacher's accidentally given them the annotated copy of the test that was supposed to go to the special needs kid (Gold Coast)

As we wait, here are some assistance package ponderings and comparisons to North…

In 2022 NM were granted F2 + F3 to be traded plus 2x extra rookie spots

In 2023 NM were granted end of R1 and 2x end of F1 (2024)

NM
2023
1x EOR1
1x R2 (to be traded)
1x R3 (to be traded)
2x extra rookie spots

2024
2x EOR1

Total over two years
3x end of R1
1x R2 tied to finishing position
1x R3 tied to finishing position
2x extra rookie spots

NM 2015 played in a prelim, received first assistance package 7 years later in 2022.

The picks that fell within their period of low finishes were largely uncompromised eg. R2 started at pick 19.

WC won a flag in 2018, is now asking for assistance 7 years later in 2025.

The picks that fell within the period of low finishes were highly compromised with R2 starting at 30+ hence unable to draft appropriate level of talent in respect to ladder position.

NM won 12 of last 84 games
WC won 11 of last 92 games

Some other key differences

NM is Victorian…
NM are a minnow club and a financial drain on the league. They are largely irrelevant, can’t attract players despite offering huge contracts and can’t get decent crowds to their games. The AFL flirted with relocating them to GC and Tassie but here we are. Given they can’t attract talent, maybe it was a Hail Mary by the AFL to give them a heap of high picks so they can produce good players from within and have some success which might equal crowds, profit and relevance. Laura Kane who was working at NM, conveniently took up a key role at the AFL in the lead-up to the NM handouts being granted.

WC is the richest club in the league (which does not affect salary cap or soft cap), has heaps of members and big crowds. Had multiple players forced into medical retirement through concussion including previous first round picks and AA senior players (Shep, Gov, Venables).

Our rumored request includes the ability to recruit a FA without diluting OA compo, EOR1 pick, maybe another to be traded and extra rookie spots.

Major factors against us seem to be the 2018 flag and, if comparing to NM, the fact they are a financial basket case and the AFL has a vested interest in clubs being profitable which on field success and hype around young players often help with.

After the worst season of all time, surely we get something….

Also they will go past us for flags won. :p
TBH I don't rly care who wins, but rather not see them have another threepeat in sight.

If these new bidding rules were in this year fir reference GC could match an undwin bid with ports 1st + their own 1st but no way they could match patterson bid without trading in another 1st rounder for say flanders .

Brisbane would have no chance to get Annabelle.

Next year port would have to keep their first and trade in another first for dougie concrane and hope no one bids number 1 .

It means if you have a top academy kid and you are not in the bottom 6 you will actively have to trade up to get your player .

Will be a cold day in Hell when I barrack for a Victorian side over a non-Victorian side.

That is the perfect summary. Could not have said it better :laughv1:

Eagle hate slot with Jimmy 9-11am.

Surely they can get someone from WA for at least one slot

11 hours a day, five days a week. That’s a lot of airtime to fill with mindless speculation.

I’m sure they’re up to it, though.

If Simpkin was to come to us, he’d cost the Hawthorn R1 pick we hold (currently pick 15) at a minimum

He’s 27 (same age as Baker, Graham and Waterman) and contracted to 2029 at a value reportedly around $1.2-1.3m per year

Not the worst option and has been a solid contributor for North through a difficult period

I’m pretty ambivalent towards him as a trade target. Definitely helps our midfield but the cost is up there. If it was just the Hawthorn pick I’d probably be ok with it

Doubt that it’s a live option though
If were spending 1.2mill I want a Warner or Walsh level player not Simpkin. 900k ok but not up from there.
