Warner isn’t that guy though. Especially not for a top 2 pick.

These are the sorts of decisions that got us where we are. Panicking and overcommitting on players (Kelly) and getting shafted at the trade table.

Warner is available for free in 2 years. He’s not a must have. Giving up valuable assets for him now is a waste.
Yep and Sydney getting curnow just adds to the salary squeeze in 2 years when warner is a FA

This bit surprised me so I looked up Heeney's age, had no idea he was 29 already

Feel like he's still in his early 20s but he's just been around that long

Mills at 28 too
I still have Emma Quayle's book when he was drafted

Ah Tom Lamb, what ye could have been

This ignores the whole premise of my argument - the two year deal and free agency opportunity.
It's a restricted free agency opportunity (which means they likely force a trade unless they are bottom of the ladder) and is two years away. My point was that we take a guaranteed Warner now rather than hope we get something later.

This is probably all pipe dream stuff anyway. If Warner wanted to come this year he wouldn't have extended.

Also, why leave a solid squad who has just added Curnow to go to the 1 win team? Stay for 2 years, get a flag, then jump on Eagles on the way up.

Huge $$$ offer would be my only argument, we've got so much cap space we could make him an offer he can't* refuse

*he also has to lead our rabble of a side, he absolute can refuse.

Hypothetically you drop Warner into the Eagles midfield start of the year when we were missing Yeo, would he be anywhere as good in our setup?

We would be better off waiting 2 years IMO to get him for free

By then you have 2 extra years development in Harley, Hewett, Hall, Allan, Gross and hopefully a combo of Sharp/Duursma too

Play the long game IMO

People really just watched us win 1 game all season, getting monstered in clearance work and stoppage play and don't even want to entertain the idea of trading for Warner? (Not that I think he is actually available after just signing an extension)
All because there's a possibility we can get him much cheaper in two years time?

Ridiculous

You put Yeo, Warner and Harley together and that should compete very well. Throw in the last month of Kelly as well and if he can continue that. Pick 2 plus another preseason into Hewett, Gross and McCarthy. Who knows?

If in the unlikely scenario Warner becomes available it would be a crazy move to wait. Especially if it’s going to cost 1 unknown talented kid

Thankfully ur not our list manager.. you rebuild through the draft not by giving away all ur trade currency.. we need multiple talent to run through the midfield not singular... most importantly Warner did regress this year.. not saying his best is not ahead of him.. but when gulden was injured and mills etc.. this year he struggled at times to cope with a heavy tag and with our midfield depth he will be targeted each week..
I agree mate.

He's not an A grader and we don't need him.........

It's not "all because" there's a possibility he'll be available via free agency down the track. It's also about what it would cost us in draft picks for an in-contract player, it's missing the opportunity to further develop a young list with elite talent, it's the question marks on whether he'd be a leader in our midfield and significantly improve it, etc.

There's a lot of compelling reasons and taken cumulatively it's clearly just not the right fit for us right now.

You might have a case if you can say for certain we can get him in 2 years.

But you can't.

He turned us down this season, people suddenly expect it's going to change in a few months after he signed his deal?

If he doesn't sign for in 2 years time, then we still have the other players I mentioned and we target other free agents.

if an investment portfolio is underperforming you dont panic buy a top tier stock at a premium price

you cut the dead wood and invest in the long term

I don't think he's a snowballs chance in Hell of leaving Sydney.

But all of the "we can get him for free in 2 years" is delusional.

Warner just signed a contract to stay in Sydney and won't leave the Swans. The Swans won't let Warner leave under contract. Carlton aren't letting Curnow leave.

We have bigger problems than trying to trade in 1 player for a sugar hit.

* The clearance/ stoppage work is the worst in the league, and has been garbage for years. We need new, experienced coaches to address it

* We lack onfield leadership, and almost all of our senior players are either gone or just about gone. Warner is a part of his club's leadership group, but the responsibility of leading our shitful midfield is probably too much for a guy who has played 5 seasons.

* Our rucks are a problem. We cant even halve ruck contests right now.

If we trade in Warner now we run the risk of another Tim Kelly situation emerging, where we end up using a lambo as a tractor. If we can address our issues over the next 2 years then we can slot Warner into a side that can accommodate his skills much better, and we're more likely to get what we need out of him.

Could see one of McKay or Curnow leaving, Carlton need to rebuild again and Curnow has the most value out of the 2.

Curnow at 29 doesn't have long left either, so best time to cash in on him

If by much cheaper you mean free from a draft perspective, yes, this is 100% exactly my belief. Cheers

I don't think Sydney expected to be so far off the mark this year. After round 5 when Warner put pen to the deal they thought their 0-2 was an anomaly, they were 2-3 and back on the way up.

Clearly it wasn't, perhaps they've had a thought that they need to recalibrate.
