FA compo is such a joke.

If the AFL would just grow up and make salaries and salary caps public, all they need to say at the start of the year is a band 1 free agent salary is say 4 x years x $900k and be done with it,
They need to get rid of the current free agency system altogether IMO.

The club receiving the player needs to pay something for the player and the club losing the player is entitled to receive something back. The players will scream because they want a free agency system that allows them to just go wherever they want.

But i think you could design a system that allows players to get to where they want to get to the majority of the time even if they don't have the right to just pick up and leave. Clubs don't want to hang on to players who want to go, they just want to get something back.

If it weren’t for his injuries OA is easily a million dollar player. Unfortunately, his injuries drop his value by 20%.

I still think for that price he’s a bargain
If it weren’t for his injuries, the Eagles would happily pay top dollar for him and we’d have a top tier KPF for the next 5 years.

Then it will get rorted.

It's already rorted.

Collingwood 2024:

IN: Perryman (band 1 FA), Houston (trade), Membrey (DFA), 3 x 3rd round draft picks, 2 x rookie draft picks
OUT: Richards (trade), Noble (trade), Murphy (ret), Carmichael (ret, rookie), 6 x de-listed players

I'd love to know how that works financially. 5 draft picks in vs 6 de-listees and Carmichael is pretty much a net gain of $200k. Membrey as a DFA would not be on a lot.

In no world is Perryman + Houston worth close to Richards, Noble and Murphy combined.

Don't get me wrong Collingwood didn't cheat or anything, this is the system "working". Or more accurately, not working. It's far too easy for clubs to move numbers around ang magically have cap space whenever a player is available.

Agreed.

Nah, that isn't free agency. That's just trade week. Agreed the players want want want and never give anything back in return. The AFL are weak as piss when it comes to dealing with the AFLPA.

If I was the AFL I would be happy to expand free agency. But in exchange the players have to make some concessions.

What you need is a system where restricted free agency is, I dunno, restricted.

Oscar Allen is out of contract at the end of this season. WC should have been able to offer him an extension last season, and he should be eligible to field offers once this season finishes. If we offer him4 years x $500k that sets his value to our team. If Brisbane turn up and offer 6 years x $900k then good for them but why do we deserve pick 2 on that basis? What should happen is that we hold the right to match those terms and keep him should we want to.

But the AFLPA don't want that. They don't want any negative aspect of US sports creeping in, only the good bits.

Just draft CDT and develop our next ruck. Better than trading 1st round picks for a 30+ year old sugar hit.
It takes 6-7 years for a skinny 18 year old to be strong enough to lead a ruck. We'll be through our premiership window and back to rebuilding by then. Need to get a mature body in that can perform as a B Grader, or back J Williams or A Reid to get it done.

Barnett suddenly finding a heart would help a lot too.

I believe the Lions deal is actually the 850k mark, the Lions know they'll need to get us pick 2 or we'll match.
If we can move him on for pick 2 then I'll pack his bags for him. He's made of tissue paper and we have better young prospects to prioritise.

Also allows us to move on from this messy co-captain crap. We haven't had a good leader since Hurn. Trade Allen out, demote Duggan and pick Baker or Graham to take the reigns.

Who would have thought that Waterman would over-take Allen in a season and a half?

Crossley’s the best ruck in the VFL. The Bulldogs looked at him over summer and passed, despite having no real backup for English. Essendon were linked to him in the mid-season draft and passed.

If you can name one guy that’s come in from the VFL, or any state league, as a mature-ager and competed without needing several years in the AFL system first, I’ll be surprised.

Through our premiership window, whys that? Because Kelly wouldve retired? Crazy take.
All of the guys we've taken in the last 3 years(drafting was a bit crap before that and it seems like we've got some gems lately) will be in their prime with only maybe Waterman gone who'd be missed.

With their record of fixing injury prone players, they would be backing themselves to get him right as well

‘Medium term’ for Oscar. I think he’s down for the year for the Eagles. Let’s see how this plays out now.

Allen is firmly in the Lions’ sights, with Hawthorn having pulled out after being told they might need to offer him six years at $1 million to lure him east.

But while the Lions will back in their medical team to get Allen right, he does present another sizeable risk.

Hit outs, the worst in the comp.
A lot more serious issues than just that.
Worst in the comp for...
kicks, disposals, marks, I50, goals, goal assists to name a few.
Dean Cox or NicNat couldn't fix those problems. Might paper over some of the cracks, but the fissures would remain.

I wonder if there is a possibility that CDT slides to the Hawthorn pick. He has plenty of talent but is a bit of an awkward size and teams may favour mids.

Yes most likely Oscar has played his last game for WC , unless he wants to stay and take a lesser contract but possibly more corporate opportunities then it's thanks, good luck .
Eagles need to keep with the rebuild , dont think Oscar can help too much , JC and Santa Claus would struggle in this rebuild .

with the $'s being thrown around, with uncertain veracity, I think its only the 6 years that we would be unwise to match. Unwise as in dumb.
