Not quite the same assurance that Jake gave when asked about where he saw his future…
I think he stays if we give a competitive offer. Similar to what Will Schofield and other media have said. Would just need to be made before he warming to the idea of life in Brissy ect.

Do think it’s a can’t lose situation for us but would be a strange move to let him go after last offseason decisions.

What do people think McVee is worth?
very reliable HB, good player.
WC have lots of HB types, Duggan, Ginbey, Baker, Hough, B Allan, Grego so while I think he is a good player he would need to come cheap, late F2nd or F3rd?
Would prefer to pay for a ready made KDEF or ruck imo.

I would have thought that Oscar knows exactly what he needs to do to secure another well paid contract and that is to stay on the park and play really good footy.
I like that he’s just focused on playing, the rest will take care of itself.
If he could played a whole season of footy it would be fantastic, great player to watch, a natural forward and a natural leader.
he is co-captain he knows exactly what he needs to do and the rest will take care of itself

This is the issue with McVee. He's super highly rated by the Dees and they'd want far more than we would want to pay for a flanker.

Harley Reid and Tasmania’s dynamic duo of Colby McKercher and Ryley Sanders will wait until later in the season to consider contract extensions as clubs and managers try to quantify the huge pay rises first-round picks will secure in their fourth seasons.
The national draft class of 2023 is the first group of first-round selections to sign mandatory three-year deals instead of two-year contracts.
It means many will be playing for cut-price rates in their third seasons – around $250,000 plus match payments – instead of the guaranteed $500,000 a year many first-round picks secured in their first contract extension for their third and fourth years.
The likes of McKercher, Nick Watson, Darcy Wilson, Nate Caddy and Sanders might require fourth-year deals of $700,000-plus before they sign on long-term.
Reid is in a different realm, with industry sources believing West Coast would need to offer $1.5 million-$2 million for him to sign a deal for his fourth season in 2028.
Melbourne’s Caleb Windsor and Koltyn Tholstrup and Gold Coast’s Ethan Read are among the handful of 2023 first-round picks to already sign contract extensions past 2026.
But Reid is happy to wait as he assesses the club’s direction under new coach Andrew McQualter.
Despite a summer with its share of injury concerns he is open-minded about his future at the Eagles.
His partner Yasmin Duursma, a Carlton AFLW player, has been living in Perth with Reid since completing the most recent AFLW season but will at some stage this year return to Victoria to start pre-season.
It has helped him enjoy his time in Perth, with no rush for him to decide if he signs a multi-year deal or plays out his initial contract before a big call on trying to return home.

It's actually quite positive

There you go. At the bottom of the article they talk about Allen and Kelly being out of contract without new deals with the Pyke regime being more conservative on giving deals to the vets. Kelly being on 1.1 mill last year to finish 10th in a Five win team is foul. At least 1/4 is getting slashed off that next deal for sure.

yep, thats why no contract has been signed for Kelly.
He is owed a decent wage of maybe $750k on 2 year contract if he has a strong year, been well compensated for his time at WC and at the end of your career it is incumbent to take a lesser $ contract. A team first thing, others are worth more than him and are in their prime.

I know you don't wanna do things to solely placate a single player but I wonder how close the Eagles girls got to asking Carlton about Duursma and having her on one year deals to avoid complications for when Harley eventually does ask to leave.

Like, she's already living here at the moment.

I'm not sure that's absurd given the cap increases and what he'll be offered elsewhere
AFL TPP will increase about 15% between 2024 and 2027 so the commentary of huge contracts is way off the mark.
Best players in the game currently on $1.1-1.2M a season add 15% on $1.2M and that an extra $180k a season.
H Reid is not in that category yet and probably 3-5 years before he is imo, so any thoughts he is worth $20M over 10 years and worth $1.5-2M in year 4 is absurd and clubs offering 20% of their TTP to 1 player is also absurd.

If we don’t offer it, someone else will.

Might as well be us.
then he is for sale, that contract should get 3 top 5 picks at a minimum.
No club offers 20% of their salary cap to 1 player

except for the absurd idea that Reid will need to be paid $1.5-2M in his 4th year??
Your going to be splitting in half. His third year will be 750k and fourth 750k to get to 1.5million.

His current third year contract without rework is peanuts baseline.

Any talks of 1.5 million in year 4 is exaggerated click bait

Clubs will absolutely offer 18m over 10 years with a big fat amount of that in 2027 (year 4) to entice him over.

You can’t renegotiate year 3 (2026) to smooth it over. What you can do to increase his earnings is to give him the media money form the additional services agreements. All clubs have about 1.2m to spend on additional events, promo marketing etc- but don’t forget that Harley isn’t the only one who wants to dip into that pot
.
We will be paying 1.4-2m for Harley to sign an extension.

I am not 100% over the 3rd year rules around paying players but my understanding is there is room to move into that sort of contract, I am comfortable if your scenario is the contract and probably fair on his trajectory.
3rd year contract currently is 250k plus match payments I believe for next year 2026.
Offering 750k in year 3 and 4 is along way from $2M a season being thrown around by some and the Vic media.
If Harley is the best player in the AFL his year 5 contract and beyond might be worth $1.4M a season if he gets there, there is no way WC would pay a player $2M a season or 10% of the TTP in 2027.

the Eagles are at it again ? what the f**k Tomlinson what a backward step. It must be a ploy surely they are trying to put off other clubs from finding out who they really want. They may has well started a rumour Glen Jakovich is returning for backline backup it would have been more feasible.

Harley won’t sign pre-bye as his wage is not changing this year.

The longer Reid waits, the higher the probability that he gets or continues to get god father offers which allows him more leverage whilst negotiating with us.

It would be financially irresponsible of his manager to allow him to sign a contract during this season. Yes he could get injured, but the calculated risk is to at least wait till this season is finished.

we may pay him 1.5m in year 4 to update his contract if he continues his progression, but their is no way WC pay him 18m over 10 years, the best players in the game will be on contracts of around 1.4m a season after 2027 so if he is the best player in the game in 2027 he is worth 1.4m a season.

We’ve had a conversation with him (last week) to see if he had any interest in coming over as a train on player

It’s tentative at most and unlikely to happen.
