Waterman has paid well unders given his uptick in form in 2024.

Waterman was OOC in 2023, we wanted to give him 2x400 or something, ended up signing 3x450+ incentives or something like that.

Then he kicks 50+ and plays like Plugger.

He had every right to request we renegotiate his deal.

Oscar has less solid ground to stand on given he's been on good money since 2021, hasn't been on the park much since 2022, and has durability concerns.

Apples and Oranges.

and if Oscar struggles to stay on the park this year i doubt Hawthorn or Brisbane will be offering him a 10+ year contract

That’s Haggas ’s 2027 draft early rankings and is obviously just where he sees it at the moment. I’ve been saying for a little while how Abbonizio and Walsh rate highly but as far as I know we don’t have any 2027 NGAs who could be considered in the top 50. ROYAL EAGLE might be able to provide a couple of names to keep an eye on though. Haggas posts a lot of good info for the future drafts in their relevant threads if you were looking for to keep an eye on the future with respect to the implications of trading future picks.
thanks for your info

If Oscar has an average year, he will probably sign for us for 3-4 years.

Any deal Oscar accepts from Lions or Hawks will need to be band one (ie 900K). Anything less and Oscar's head isn't turned and we would match.

Players don’t renegotiate deals and hand money back when they underperform. You get paid your worth at contract time and negotiate a better deal time if you earn it.

1990's called and they want their list manager back.

We live in a player driven economy (unlike US sports). We don't renegotiate, Waterman requests a trade we say no, we have a disgruntled player, and other players on our list and from other clubs look at the stand off between club and player making a reasonable request and think "oooft, I don't know if that's somewhere I want to be".

You might end up keeping Waterman for cheap, but you do damage to your brand in the minds of players and managers.

I agree with you, it doesn't work the other way, but that's because of AFLPA and the balance of power being so strongly in players favour in AFL unlike US sports.

I know you’ve posted them in your initial rankings but I’m sure a few in this thread (myself included) would be interested to know your current thoughts on where you see Walley, Banfield and Evans this year. I’ve got a slim hope they both get through to the 3R which would mean we don’t need to use a pick on them.

If you’ve got any comments on 2026 WCE NGAs Kenh and McGlade they’d be welcome too. Keep up the good work 👍

Hey Phil, if a players career is cut short thru injury is he paid out the balance of his contract ?
If so can clubs take out insurance to protect them selves from that happening.

Yes it is and it doesn't count towards salary cap. The year they are on the list in that years money counts towards salary cap but future years don't.

After the huge buddy trade (the afl wanted him to go to gws) the AFL decided to deliberately **** sydney over and say that if Buddy retired early it would still count against the cap.

This was a one off however I think if we start seeing ridiculous contracts over ridiculous time periods the AFL will potentially change how it has an effect on the salary cap.

Also Oscar Allen is a free agent, if he goes anywhere the clubs best option will be the tier 1 free agency compo pick. Unless the club pulls something ridiculous out of it's arse and gets out of the bottom 4. The club could win 8 games and still likely finish 15th or 16th.

Hi WCE_phil, pretty sure there has been some changes to injury payouts. I believe the afl has put in place a maximum payout time period from their side, and if the contract is longer than that period (think it might be 3 years), then it's on the club and does count towards the salary cap.

Edit: applies to concussion.

I currently have Walley at 21, Banfield 46 Evans 51 & Caton 55 in my rankings.
Wes Walley - athletic forward with x factor, can take a very nice mark
Charlie Banfield - small forward and can play wing
Kobe Evans - general forward type
Jake Caton - Midfielder

Others who could be draftable Darcy Montgomery, Tyler Williams & Clancy Banfield

2026
Garrison Kenh - half back flanker with lots of run and carry
Lachlan McGlade - small forward who can find the goals

Futbolista would have more in depth info on these lads

This is partially correct, it was one of the things under discussion for my quick trip to AFL house last month. It depends on the injury and also the injury history (at the AFL's discretion of course)

If someone has a 6 year contract, has never had a major concussion and has one that ends their career none would be counted towards salary cap.

A guy with a 6 year contract who has done his hamstring 5 times and then tears it off the bone resulting in the end of their career would need a negotiated payout or there are salary cap implications.

Also if the injury is caused that results in retirement is caused by a reportable offence then the club is off the hook. Certain things like kidney damage that require the removal of a kidney the club is also off the hook.

These are just 3 examples on very different ends of the scales.

Yeah I put a lot of work into future drafts, I'm no expert but do a lot of research haha

Very well covered. I can't add much more except to say that EP might be tempted to use Caton as that rebounding defender. A player who can eat up some metres with a few bounces.

I wouldn't call Charlie Banfield a small forward, he's 191cm. Clancy Banfield isn't tied to WC.

I think that’s about right for the rankings, Walley in particular could slide up or down 5-10 spots with a consistent/inconsistent season. I have him slightly further down the pecking order.

Would love to see Caton used that way this year, if he can deliver the ball well at speed that would be a good list fit for us and may mean we target someone other than Josh Lindsay in the late 1R if we’re looking to fill that role this year. Kenh is an exciting prospect for next year.
