Not that phased about Warner either way - we are still a mile off and trading away multiple top picks this season for Warner (along with paying him a huge wage) is probably counter productive at this point.

That said, who knows what is true - just goes to show you the ‘experts’ are all guessing and hoping they are right 90% of the time.

There will be other names in the frame before the end of the year - remember when Logan McDonald was DEFINITELY signed and sealed for Freo last year? That was a distant memory by trade week.

Focus on extending Harley, re-signing Oscar (after seeing him stay on the park, playing good footy for at least half a season) and hit the draft.

If there is a chance to add experienced genuine ball winners under the age of 28 then go for it too - we need more guys that can get it 30 times in a game in a hurry.

Oh and a ruckman. An actual ruckman who can win hit outs and get the ball more than 15 times a game on a regular basis.

Honestly im happy either way with Warner, the only bad outcome imo is if we overpay for him.

If we got him id still be nervous we dont have enough decent picks/depth, id feel like we need to bring in 1-2 other mature best 22 players along with Warner to make the most of him. The likes of Starcevich for example(yes I know concussions)

If we go the draft again its a bit easier, just probably want to find a couple of young players who have lacked opportunity to bring in cheap, like Sheldrick/Allan types that have been mentioned many times to help cover until the 1st-2nd year players are more ready
In what world is starcevich a need tho? That'd be a total waste of resources.

I didnt say he in particular was a need, I said players like him for example, meaning players who can bring the window forward a couple of years to make full use of Warner, Baker, Allen and Watermans prime years between age 25-32ish

I'd be looking at the following players to bring in on the cheap:
James Tunstill
Leek Aleer
Angus Sheldrick
Josh Ward
Jai Serong

If we lose Cole or Petch to FA that would give us some currency to target some fringe players from top 4 clubs.

Draft the best mid, cody curtin and another best available mid.

Bring Dan Curtin across for a compromised Tassie draft pick to play KPD with his brother.

Warner comes across as a FA.

Batman Barnett gets another couple years of development and explodes onto the scene in 2027.

He’s a really good player but anyone willing to give him more than a 2 year contract is bonkers - every club in the league would know that. He’s a not a player we should be taking a risk on.
As I said, players like him who can bring our window forward.
Not necessarily him

Even if we got him on a cheaper deal I dont see the issue, any other club that signs him will have the same risks to consider. Brisbane might be ok to let him go and not match the bid if Starc gets a band 2 offer rather than the original likely band 1, as they no doubt have replacements ready to go

The standout player among them would be Ward imo.

I think Petch is gone FA.
Cole is a good player who plays almost every week, not top 10 but best 22.

Best mids x 2 with our pick 3-4 and Hawks 1st.
If our KDEF stocks don't progress in 2025, Barnett/Brock/A Reid/Shanahan and feel we need another C Curtin would be great.

Get Dan like you say.
Warner FA.

Agreed - he would also cost the most unfortunately.

I would love to get one back at the Hawks and bring him over for a late second or later pick but he played very well last weekend and I'm sure he's close to breaking out this season.

Tunstill I haven't followed much but he is a balanced mid at Brissy who can't get a game.

Was part of the strong WA cohort in 2021 draft

I’m keeping Cole. From the outside it feels like he’s a culture guy at the club. He’s impressed me with how he’s attacking the new game plan. Maybe he’ll be phased out over his next contract, but maybe he won’t, one thing for certain is he’d still bring a positive attitude to the club if he was playing 2s.

There’s Something about bridging the gap between our last and next premiership.

Youngest (Eagles) premiership player on our list

I'll be the first to admit I'm not as big a fan of Cole as others on this board...

That said, he played well on the weekend and he's always looked a lot better up the ground compared to locking down a dangerous small fwd close to goal.

It's early days but he's showing good intent and leadership

Every team needs their B/C grade role players - Cole, whilst he has his limitations, is a great team player and plays his role week in week out and shows leadership on field for the younger guys. I’d keep him on a short term contract.

Agree with Cole up the ground rather than deep defensive. I dont think it would have mattered who played deep defence on guys like Papley and Cameron for west coast over the last few years - they were going to have bags kicked on them. Cole up the ground around half back where he can apply front on defensive pressure is where he's best used IMO.

Cole was always going to adapt the best to the new game plan as he was the only guy who took the game on as Simpson tried to change their style in his last season.

As Cal said on the latest Gettable. Teams now have cash to match RFAs, they’ll just move money around if it means they get a better deal then the compo pick. So even if Chad comes when he’s a FA, expect to still have to trace for him.

You’d hope our mid and young player stocks are looking pretty good by then.

If no Warner?
No Oscar?
Who knows with Harley?

That could be a lot of cap room.

Bobby Hill and Darcy Cameron linked?

Interesting off season coming up.

Need to be sharp and either sign Harley or turn him into Warner, a top 5 draft pick and a pick about 15.

The next iteration of this is that clubs follow the Daniher model.

For instance- Sydney can match an offer of 15 million over 8 years, as their cap would be empty in years 6,7,8 but couldn’t match an offer of 7 million over 3 years.

Then we extend after 18 months for 8 million over 5.

Or…. The AFL forces clubs to match not just the overall offer, but each contract year.

Do people that call Warner a front-runner or cherry-on-top player etc. actually watch Sydney games? Reads like copium.

So far from the truth isn’t it!
He’s their number one guy in the trenches and speeding away on the race track.
