I am just gutted that our first pick from last year can't get a game before pick 40 something and pick 7000 or so. Shows how shit our TRADING and recruiting has been. **** sake Chesser, now Hewett can't play more than 4 games in a row. We my friends are fast becoming like St Kilda and Footscray stuck in mediocrity However we aren't even mediocre yet,it will be years before we are even competitive.

I dont understand that at all Gross has been outstanding in a area of need
It does not matter if he is first pick or last pick of draft form is what counts
While Bo will play as a defender not currently as big a need as mids

You'd think you'd just use your natural first pick and take a top level mid like Smith or Draper if that was the case, wouldn't you?

Hawthorn would just walk away and hope to draft Cooper Duff-Tytler. You matched the contract offer, you get to keep Oscar.

This is where I am curious about being in a players shoes.

Sam Mitchell chases Oscar, he is on every news channel and clearly has impacted him and I guess the perception of his character.

If Hawks would just yeaaah, no thanks. You would feel absolutely dirty that Hawks used and abused you like that. I would think if a club is in your ear you are making a commitment that would do what you can to get the deal done.

West Coast cops a lot of bullshit from our own supporter base because we will overpay to make sure the deal is done. Anyway interesting times.

The flip side is the meeting being made public has made Oscar feel incredibly uncomfortable (sheepish) in his current environment, and makes it less likely he stays.

Fred Rodriguez named in South Fremantle’s league side in a forward pocket.

Interesting to see how he goes at senior WAFL level before the national championships mid year.

No Wes Walley for Subi’s league team despite appearing in some of their preseason games.

These two along with Cody “Curts Jnr” Curtin and Koby Evans are WA’s AFL National Academy squad members for this year.

Really hope South Freo are judicious in playing Fred in the league. Will in part be good for his development but he’s missed a bit of underage footy and still needs to learn his midfield craft.

Do you wonder if Oscar met with Lions staff, when you played us over here?

Hawthorn might have felt they needed to get in front of Oscar, after possibly meeting with us.

I wouldn’t want to be in Oscars shoes atm, with how this all playing out.

The thing i scratch my head about is when we drafted Allen people were complaining that we needed a genuine mid and instead we drafted another half back flanker that we hope might be able to play some midfield minutes one day. And the defence of that decision on this board was that by pick 16 all the genuine mids were gone and so we had to revert to picking the best available player left regardless of position.

Then Murphy Reid, who was drafted by Freo after our first pick, bobs up and dominates pre season scratchies for Freo, and lines up for round 1 and plays really well. So he is already getting a game in a club with a pretty good midfield. And Kevin Sheahan and others talking about him are saying he was a genuine goal kicking midfielder in all the games in his draft year. So there were in fact genuine mids left in the draft when we took Allen we just decided again to go for the back flanker we don't need.

I think Oscar is likely out the door.
Shame, because he could have had a cushy career post football in WA, likely working in the media somewhere.
Instead, he will get an extra couple of years playing footy, but will be a pariah in his own state.
He will likely have to move out of WA long term.

Why not just back your body in, and after 4 years just see if you're still be able to play footy?
Back yourself in.

All this talk about "setting yourself up" with a long term contract is just bullcrap. What is the point? Surely you're going to retire when you can't play any more. He would have been looked after long term, and you'd much rather be in your own state at the end of your career.

Nope - I am honestly not fussed who he has met with.

I am just stating that if the Eagles did match the offer and requesting a heavy price to trade Oscar. Only then for Hawks to walk….

Surely that needs to be a consideration for future players targeted by Hawks. Personally I think if a club makes a commitment to player X, they can’t just then play tough love, block their number and then just curve them.

I could be completely wrong but I cannot remember any trade where a club chased a player so hard, only for the club to turn their back on him, and nonthess the final stages of a trade. It’s then, promises means and count the most.

If the difference is worth $1-2M and a premiership then well, it's worth it for him to move.

I think he will go but the decision hasn't been made yet. I reckon he has decided to take whatever the best financial offer is no matter where it is. But the other clubs haven't offered him what he wants yet either. They are probably just offering the same as us or even less but with the bonus of team success. Thats why he and his manager are still leaking to the media and trying to pressure and tease a better offer out of us.

If he had decided to go the best thing to do would be to shut up, stop leaking, keep a low profile, if the media ask him about his contract straight up lie and say you are in ongoing negotiations and expect to sign something in the second half of the season. Then pull the rug out and announce he is going a the end of the year. Kind of like Judd did.

100% we would.

Isaac Cumming was band 2 last year and GWS got pick 24. Doedee and Gresham were picks 27 and 28 in 2023. Huge difference between pick 1-5 and a pick in the mid or late 20s.

I would love to see the media reaction if WC match a free agency offer. I am assuming the onus will be on Haw/Bris/whoever to satisfy WC given they made a commitment to Allen. That's how it works right?
And then they give us the blues pick for Allen and we come full circle

Obviously hate giving Damo credit for anything but did catch this:

IF ...

Sam Mitchell continues to pick off unsettled players at vulnerable clubs ...

THEN ...

no idea why other coaches aren't playing a similar game and targeting the many Hawks who aren't playing seniors due to depth or injury, as well as the ones who may be seeking greater in-game responsibilities. Here's some options: Mitch Lewis, Jai Serong, James Worpel, Josh Ward, Ned Reeves, James Blanck, Sam Frost. Something will have to give at some stage.

Jai Serong could genuinely be a good get - he's logjammed behind key defenders at the moment and would be a need for us/the right age for that need. VFL team of the year and Hawks board were stoked when he got a game in the final after Frost went down - so judging on that he's been quality, just behind older options. Surely would consider playing in the same state as his brother.

Ned Reeves also worth a shake IMO as a genuine, massive lump of a ruckman. Again, Hawks board really seems to rate him even up against Meek.

You could find knocks against both players sure, Serong not super tall, Reeves not great on the followup at ground level, but think it's telling when a player's own board is calling for them to get a game more regularly (especially in a good side). Serong over Jamieson and Reeves over Flynn would be a huge upgrade IMO.

Would honestly be worth a go offering them better opportunity/more money in future and seeing how we go. They won't be able to get high and mighty if we approach them either - get Woosha over, would send a stronger message than anything we do with Allen IMO. Would also mean we'd have a firmer ground to stand on in trades, especially if Oscar does go in goodwill.

Yeah I'd like for us to offer Josh Ward and Jai Serong decent contracts that either forces Hawks to match (and therefore limits their ability to target outside targets) or they can't match and therefore ask for a trade to WC.

We then walk them to the PSD as a big f*ck you to Sam Mitchell for trying to snipe us every chance he gets.

Doesn’t work like that for out of contract players, only restricted free agents (and only those who don’t like the contracted offered to them) who want to move to another club.

Worpel is a restricted free agent, but he would have to accept a contract offer from West Coast to force Hawthorn to match.

Could only walk one player through the PSD, as it’s based on ladder order, so Hawthorn draft the second player.
