Do we really know the truth with Oscar Allen?

Towards the end of last season on one of his podcasts, Will Schofield said that Allen’s knee is a lot worse than the club has revealed and that there’s every chance it will never get better.

I considered that massive news at the time, and was staggered by the lack of follow up discussion. It seems to have been very hush hush ever since.

A degenerative knee injury explains why he is playing down back and why the Eagles aren’t prepared to offer him a deal you’d expect an AFL captain to receive.

In other words all this talk about “form” is irrelevant. Sure, he might adapt better to playing as a physically limited defender, but the prospect of an AA KPF is over.

Further, if he’s expecting a big offer from another club either that club will be negligent in their due diligence or he’s kidding himself.
His knee could be dodgy AND he's out of form. He's moved alright the last two weeks which would lend itself to just starting the season out of form.

I've been thinking about this for awhile. Our midfield is not getting any better, and while it should be the #1 position of need in the draft, I think we need to be more strategic about how we target ready-made ball-winning mids.

I would look long and hard at the Suns, who are stacked in that area of the ground and will only get stronger. Picks are irrelevant to them given Zeke Uwhland is touted top-3 pick.

If Oscar leaves, handing us another top 5 pick, could we use our second-rounder (or ours and Hawthorn's) to prise Sam Flanders out of the Gold Coast? Ready-made ball-magnet in the right age bracket who is being played out of position. Not to mention a Vic Country boy so no real ties to Melbourne. He's clean, racks it up and is smart around goals. These are the guys we should be targeting - with respect to Jack Graham and Liam Baker - bonafide mids. Would love your thoughts
It's an interesting idea but why would Gold Coast give up Flanders? And why would he want to come to us? I think we'd be more in the market for the likes of Davies, Fiorini, etc. although Fiorini being an unrestricted free agent eating into Oscar's compensation might rule him out.

Well well well. Colin is still at it.

I do not hide behind anything so you might as well name me. Yes, I was the main poster who, on behalf of a number of well respected posters, were sick to death of hearing from you on our board. So I took action. I failed to get you completely banned from our board but managed to have you excluded from the specific threads on drafting, Colts, NGA, FS etc. We also have a couple of those larger conversations that we directly control that provides next level details. It is with the changes that have been made have many of us found how pleasant and informative Bigfooty can be. And we don't need to plough through 20 pages a day.

You seem to be in denial that it was warranted. Why then did I act? A number of reasons.
1. Your passive aggressive posting style (you deny this but like a teenager, do not like or take criticism well and failed to change) which has only gotten worse since your Lion's won the flag.
2. The smartar$e, know it, mansplaining way too many times about how academies work despite never having worked in an academy is blocking up pages of threads and nothing new comes out of your posts.
3. You attempt to mock posters who claim inside knowledge yet you claimed to have being invited into draft boxes and been given draft post mortems about each player the draft. You will now ask me to prove that post. Reality, you might have been lucky to dine at the club bar and talked crap with a couple of scouts while at the bain marie (if anyone at all). Nobody went to town on you for your claimed insider knowledge yet the above post is proof your petticoat has a tendency to burst into flames.
4. Since you have been rightfully excluded from conversations, you seem to think there is no challenge on Phil or any other posters information. Wrong. But you were not there to witness so you assume it does not happen. In fact the details given to a small group well before trade week and then again the draft ended up as advertised. They just weren't shared with you and there were robust conversations from many sides.
5. You seem to think that you can work from home with draftees. What do I mean by that? You invest a significant chunk of time on open boards reading other posters input and then come back and regurgitate this to our board. You do not go to any games of WAFL, U18 Carnival, Colts, Coats, etc and seem to believe Youtube clips and watching TV from very limited cameras will provide insights into a player and their possible development. In discussions I have had with recruiters, Footy IQ racks up as number 1. You get to see this with running patterns, leading lanes, timing, providing outlet options, positioning at the base of marking contests, etc. These can only be gleaned by going to games. I have no doubt you watch a lot on TV, but that is only a small part as to whether a player will be able to transition to being an AFL player. And yes, I do go to games and often sit and talk with other posters when at the game. Sharing information and relevant insights helps my knowledge base.

I could go on but I am likely to have this post "managed" by moderators trying to keep the peace.

In closing, you might be wondering why I call you Colin. Two characters that come to mind:

1. Strong resemblance to character Colin from Love Actually. Colin sprouts on about being a love goddess and having a big nob. His friend gives him the hard truth and tells him "Colin, you are a lonely, ugly ar$ehole and you must accept it".

2. Derek and Clive (Peter Cook and Dudley Moore) in the "Hello Colin" in the Come Again album in 1977.

Derek speaking:
  • A’right Colin, how are you then? All right?
  • Yeah, eh, yeah, nice to see you. What, er, how’s, how’s Robin? All right then?
  • Yeah, that’s nice. Yeah, well, take care.
  • Yeah, give my love to the family.
  • O.K.! See you!
  • (pause)
  • Kent.

So, my learning today is that we should be less defamatory as a board and stop calling you Briskent.

Colin is more respectful.

Tremendous work.

Henceforth That Poster shall be referred to as Colin.

Would we at all be interested in Clayton Oliver. He clearly needs a change & to get out of Melbourne ASAP. He’s on a big contract & it’s been said Melbourne would be happy to send him to another team for very little if they took on the contract. We have the cap space.

He’s the type of mid we need & maybe like Hogan a change in cities could work well for him. If he could find form again it would go along way to helping the midfield.

When they say they 'need' to get out of Melbourne, that just straight up means Geelong...

I'd want to know his coke budget first.

We could and should at least ask the question.
Oh we can ask the question, it'll be 'No' though.

Why go to Perth when he can simply hide on the coast and have anything he does brushed under the carpet, like a whole host of Geelong players before him?

We should be having the conversation but culture > talent

if we could do some sort of a grundy comes across and they pay some of his salary. You deff ask the question about clayton, be silly not too

Clarry ain’t going to a bottom team and to a state like WA where his media coverage will just go up.

Plus he's a ginger and will literally catch fire during our summer.

I'd happily take Oliver. We know he is a top class midfielder and would immediately make ours better.

We can also afford the large chunk of salary. But it's not going to happen.

Worst contract in the league, a complete mess off the field, sign me up! That’s the exact type of character you want around 20 year olds

Of course it’s obviously not going to happen. Geelong will get him for a bag of chips at years end almost guaranteed. Melbourne might even pay Geelong the way it’s going.

On field Oliver would be a great get- he would provide a lot of the heavy lifting we would need to shield the likes of Harley/Hewett/Gross until they are ready to take some of the heavy lifting. Much like what we hope Yeo will be able to do when he learns to regrow his foot.

But we know it’s not on field Oliver that’s really the issue. And let’s face it- he wouldn’t be getting away from the spotlight over here, if anything it would be amplified. So I feel it’s a recipe for disaster.

Plus, genuinely not convinced that this is the year to trade for the sugar hit. We need to be headed to the top end of the draft as much as we could and work on retaining the talent we have. At this point it’s really the only way we get ourselves out of this position long term.

I know this period sucks for all of us- but i genuinely feel we are working towards having the nucleus of our next side already here and we will be thankful in the long run it happened now and not 3-4 years down the line.

Plus, if we were going to get anyone at the Dees we should be in Rivers ear. I can see him projecting into a mid the same way Yeo did around this point in his career.

Oliver is a pipe dream.....

I haven't see him for 7-8 years. This happened maybe 10-12 years ago. He didn't run with the "I own a construction company" all the time. The lies would change. He constantly told lies. He was also a raging alcoholic and boasted about how much piss he could put away (probably the only thing he didn't lie about). Other than that, he was a good guy. But a loser.

When we were in the spa that day, it was me, a mate (who was a closer mate of him than I was), and his female flatmate. He worked for his Uncle's construction company as a labourer. The three of us all knew that. He knew that we knew that. He just bullshitted this random guy for about half an hour in front of us.
Okay, okay, I feel ya dawg, but now comes the most important question, was your mate called Phil?

Rivers is the one. Really nice age profile for us, and even if he doesn’t go full star as a mid he would be a great hbf with better rebounding/kicking ability than most of our guys.
23 yo, puts him at just above the maturity of most of our current core, but can play his whole career through with him.
Oliver’s too old, too expensive, and too risky.

Eagles heavy article.

A pre draft priority pick can all but be ruled out (pick 1) even though we haven’t asked for one yet. Just mentions the past assistant packages and maybe extra cat b spots.

Harleys decision, he won’t make it until later in the year but Eagles and Worsfold very confident but Vic teams think he could still be considering returning back to Vic.

Pretty positive article considering

Sounds like some sort of assistance package will be offered (if we ask), Oscar will almost definitely get Band 1 (if he leaves), and club is very confident Harley will stay (on a 3 or 5 year deal)

Geelong's cap should have already pricked the attention of the AFL. They keep bring in players and then still talk about a whole heap of other players coming in as if their cap is unlimited. I'd be cavity searching some of those player's financials.

Oliver is gettable. Swans are the perfect fit. They're a bit soft, and an inform Oliver could deliver a flag. Oliver is not working for the Dees. The Dees is not working for Oliver. I think Melbourne (the city) is not working for Oliver.

West Coast should:

1. Ask the question of his management
2. Hire a PI and see what he's up to. If he has a drug problem, the put a line through him. If he's just a dick, we're in a position to take anyone at the moment.
3. Offer to pay 70% of the contract, but re-jig it to have more on the front end
4. The deal must be done for a pick over 50. It's basically a salary and dickhead dump for them.

Okay, okay, I feel ya dawg, but now comes the most important question, was your mate called Phil?
Yes.

No, not really. His name was Mike Bullshit-Artist. He had one of those double barrelled surnames.
