Would we at all be interested in Clayton Oliver. He clearly needs a change & to get out of Melbourne ASAP. He’s on a big contract & it’s been said Melbourne would be happy to send him to another team for very little if they took on the contract. We have the cap space.

He’s the type of mid we need & maybe like Hogan a change in cities could work well for him. If he could find form again it would go along way to helping the midfield.
Not sure West Coast are in a position to be rehabilitating broken talents at this point.

A bid for King along with Sydney’s finishing position is the key here. If there is any chance King is bid on before their 1R then they would be keen to trade. If they can get a pick in before matching if I was them I’d take a player then go into points deficit next year. On current positions, I don’t think a bid comes on King before Sydney’s first pick (I rate King in the pick 10-20 range) but hypothetically speaking:

I’d ask for pick 5, Sheldrick and Ladhams for picks 16, 19, 34 and Ryan.

That would net Sydney +421 points for bids, give us a pick the at would likely get Josh Lindsay or Cody Curtin as well as a mature ruck and inside midfielder.
Don't mind this - I feel like we're overpaying a bit but I don't mind it. (If Ryan HAS to go...Other players I'd rather lose first as he's one of the few that can kick and create.)

I tend to agree with Twomey. 90% of the time the player gets to where they want to go, even when they’re contracted.

Everyone was asking how Port would get the deal for JHF done without losing players for eg.

I have no idea whether Harley stays or goes, but based on precedent if he want to go to the cats or hawks he will likely get there.
If only we could trade with ourselves. We'd be getting one heck of a haul

I thought the Roos were moving to Bunbury.
There's a catchment of maybe 150k people between Bunno, Busso, Collie and the Margaret River region. It's probably not enough to sustain a team. You'd need a stadium and maybe 20k people per game to make a profit. When you have 2 games per year, it's an easy get. Especially when it's played at a ground where you can drive your car up and honk your horn when Zhurhar scores a goal. But 11-12 games a season? Fold them already.

No way to Clayton Oliver to much hassle.

I think he was joking, but probably still more financially viable than they are atm. 20k attendance is also significantly more than either GCS or GWS have ever averaged and the AFL continues to pump money into them

So more than NRL support in the whole state, at $65mil of taxpayers money. Deal!

After pick 16 ends up a pick in the late 20s at best after bids I think we’d be ok with the price paid but I agree he adds skills that few in our squad bring to the team. AsterixTheGaul is right that Ryan would be a good fit for the Swans in a trade like the above and we should also be death riding Port as that would be the pick we’d be chasing if we were to manufacture a pick swap with GCS that could also include Liam Ryan if reports of him exploring his options are accurate.

This.
With Warner chase being delayed for 2 years I would be going after best available and gettable mids that can make our side better next year.
Kelly and Yeo are almost done WC should be chasing players of the calibre of Flanders and Ward, or even both.
Seems to be a reluctance on here to name A or B grade players on here that would complement our team and their price.
I think you are not too far off with Flanders, our 2nd round and Hawks 2nd should be enough and offer him a decent contract and he looks to have upside if played in our midfield.
The same with Ward, has big upside, couple of years younger at almost 22 and would cost around our 2nd round pick.
Draft, draft, draft kids is not the answer to short term problems, it is the answer to a long term team of talent.
Get 1 or both of Flanders and Ward and draft top end mids with our 1st 2 picks in 2025 imo.
Totally agree with the sentiment. It's critical to snare a more seasoned mid who is actually a good mid (not Baker, Graham) who can lead the way for a few years:
1. To reduce the reliance on Harley & Hewett to do the heavy lifting over the next few years. Kelly & Yeo can't be relied on for this
2. Puts us in a better position to secure Warner for no draft capital
3. Someone like Flanders certainly fits the bill. Maybe Rivers. Flanders I think costs the Hawks 1st rounder, but I think with the Allen compo likely, & possibility of getting Warner for nothing in 2 years, it's worth giving up. We know we'll still have 2 top 3 picks this year, plus access to other high end talent in Evans, Walley.

Ward I'm not so sure as I see him in a similar boat of trying to establish himself still.

I think it's an absolute must to bolster the midfield as soon as possible.

This is my point. Port started with pick 8 and a F1 and were able to get a deal done for JHF and still get Rioli and Ratogoulea.

Now we have future trading for two years in advance.

The cats (and every club) will make sure they get a deal done if he nominates them, because unlike most of the names you mentioned, clubs will probably only get one swing at Harley.
Yes Cats do have players with currency they'd likely be willing to trade to get Harley in the door
Plus 3 years of first round picks. Package that up someone will bite for a very high pick

I think we can put a south west team to bed here and now.
Imagine getting any decent player to move to or stay in Busso/Bunbury. It's hard enough attracting guys to Perth. Also the travel is that little bit harder going from Busso airport.
Maybe those players live in Perth you say? Then they'll be travelling 2.5hrs for their home games, and across the county for their away games.

Is the Harley low ball trade speculation gaining more hype because we have a very poor trade reputation.

After last year maybe Clarke, Pyke and the recruitment team should take notice of what's going on around them.

Whattaya mean mate, it's common knowledge Matty Clarke is known as Megamind in the trade/draft industry

3 late first rounders sounds about right

2 of those picks can then be split into mid second rounders

the last pick traded along with our future first rounder for any struggling midget who doesn't hit the scoreboard

Plus they will get 2 home games of 55k+ against the Dockers and Eagles at Optus.

Can see the Vic and SA clubs start complaining if the NGA pipeline is as good as projected for WA sides over the next few years, that it needs to be split up some more. A 3rd side evens that’s out.

Having never been down that way, would player retention be an issue? I guess if it’s not at Geelong which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, they can sell the lifestyle?

Geelong is basically Mandurah. Can get up to Melbourne in about an hour with normal traffic flow. Can easily live in a good suburb of Melbourne and play down there.

Merge North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and St.Kilda and call them the North Western Saints and bring in Tassie. Done
Sounds like you’re coming around to my idea.

Only problem is that with the addition of Tassie that leaves a 17 team competition which really isn’t in anyone’s best interests.

Mini is a people person and would know Oliver from his Melbourne days. I'd trust him to get the best out of Oliver.

Could be a real moneyball recruitment if we can get him for minimal trade cost or better yet as a salary dump if parties are desperate to part ways.
