Nothing really. Outside of the top few it was an average draft.

Darcy Wilmot, Jacob van Rooyen, Kai Lohmann, Matt Johnson, Connor Macdonald, Jesse Motlop, Mitchito Owens, Paul Curtis, Jake Soligo, Marcus Windhager...

Probably no superstars but the above have certainly done more than Chesser so far.

Whats Ollie Wines situation like at Port? Type of player I think we need to help Harley out.
I'd be worried about those random heart concerns he seems to have.

Or maybe that makes him ideal for our club.

Can someone remind me who we missed in the chesser draft? I'm a gluten for misery

Most of us including me wanted Matthew Johnson with that pick.

While Johnson hasn't been as dominant as I had expected .... by God he has been 100 times better than Chesser.

I was fu(king furious when we took Chesser and left Johnson on the board.

Edit: Chesser was the typical Rohan O'Brien special.

A kid who had a good bottom year in the TAC , was injured in his draft year, was an outstanding athlete who the Pie Man punted on becoming a good footballer, again he got to clever by half.
Wishing like hell that the good athlete would translate into a good footballer.

To quote the character Tommy Norris from the Landman series.

" Well, wish in one hand, shit in the other, see which one fills up first."

Must say I don't miss RO'B one bit, still early days for Massey but the initial impression is that he is a quantum improvement on O'Brien.
O'Brien failed to keep abreast with the way the game was trending and as such got left behind in the race to compile a good list.
I blame him for most of our list woes that we now have.

Brisbane were in a similar position to us in 2016/17. The basket case of the comp and managed to trade some 22, 23 year old guns in Charlie Cameron and Lachie Neale to support their newly drafted talent. How they got them there, I have no idea but someone needs to be selling a clear vision to the next stars of the future.

I feel like we do have the young talent around but nothing in between them and the 27-28 year olds. Those older guys aren’t going to be there when we push for our next flag but the void just feels too big.

I'm needing an "emotional pick me up"

About to put the black and white scarf on and watch the Pies v Dockers game.

Is that issue/responsibility solely on OB?

I would imagine the club hierachy should have been alert to those changes and consequentially involved in recruiting discussions along the lines of, ‘looking at modern game we need players with the following skill set’

Now get out there and find them.

Well sure obviously its on the head of more than just one individual, but he was the boss of the show and there wasn't a lot of change of staff added to the recruiting department over his tenure.
Ultimately it was his team and as such he is responsible for the collective performance its his team.

Now that can also, in part be a fault attributable to Nisbett, who too stayed well beyond his use by date.

But the doubling down of making O'Brien the list manager as well as head of recruiting was a big mistake ... where are the checks and balances ?

And I do also have the image of the discussion of who we take, when we were after a midfielder and the camera hones in on Simpson as he says Worpol , O'Brien shakes his head, next minute, we call out Ainsworth.

Now I am not going to slaughter O'Brien on just one bad call, but he and his team made many a call that pissed me off.

The XO'N and the Foley year in particular irked me greatly.

If you have one bad draft it's not good, but its not the end of the world.
Two bad drafts in a row and its starts to really hurt.
Three bad drafts in a row and its sets your list back a decade.

We are in many ways paying the price now for poor drafting and trading.

Okay stallon - This is what I'd try and do pretending to play list manager.

Trying to be realistic...At least in my eyes.

* We need to be ambitious and pull every lever possible.

Areas in dire need of improvement.

1. Ruck
2. Midfield support for Reid. Preferably a player who can win clearances but also has some speed
3. General outside speed and skills
4. A proper pressure/X-Factor small forward (Owies isn't it/Ryan, goal aside is more a marking forward)
5. Support for McCarthy as creative distributor off HBF

* I've probably missed a few things but I'm trying to knock this out quickly. I'll most likely add to it when I get a bit more time.

We have the advantage of what is most likely a very large "Warchest"
We're also a tier 1A club, albeit at the bottom of a cycle
We can pretty much guarantee any player we bring in to fill a starting role/get good time, provided they perform to a level.

1. Ruck
I'm very much in the camp of ROB for zero draft capital over paying for Cameron...Set him up for retirement, name a price and get him to walk through to the PSD.
Dont think we are this ruthless, but id like to be surprised!
Could even just offer our 3rd rounder or something just to keep everybody happy
2. Midfield support/talent
We're most likely not going to be able to land a current superstar, we need to identify who potentially could be but just isn't getting time due various factors. I'd use the "Cameron Currency" and go after Sam Berry. Personally, I think Berry could be a very high level midfielder, if given consistent time and role. Berry would also help as a stablemate for ROB. We could most likely double his current pay. Fiorini is another who could be gettable and help lift the calibre. (Berry much higher ceiling of course). Powell I'm not sold on. I don't think his hands are good enough.
I like Berry, hes very strong in his contested work and is a strong tackler.
Idk if hes better overall as a player than the usual ones we get linked to, and he has less positional versatility so he could just be out of the side in 2 years time if Hall and our new draftees develop well.
Id still do it if hes cheap
6. Support for McCarthy as creative distributor off HBF
Play Liam Ryan in this role, I think it'd suit him perfectly. Our side would be much better off with another guy who has kicking skills, magical field vision and good toe....With our draft capital most likely gone by this stage, we need to think laterally and this is an option I've been keen on for a while. It also keeps him in the game.
Is Ryan good enough of a defensive player? id still rather McCarthy is the one we give the license to but we do need to free up spots in that fwd line.
