Okay who is Sam Power and what has happened to Matt Clarke!!!!
Must say Power was very good in the role.

Even clearer than earlier, to essentially the same trade questions (no surprise. But additional contracts questions which were also good).

16 seems no chance to go to Brisbane, and pony up for band 1 or we match.

It’s unlikely we move 16, but to be fair he did only say it’s off the table “at this stage”, so I’ll be continuing to live in a state of distress.

One take-away I got from this is that whislt West Coast see the Allen and Starcevich deals as separate, Brisbane see them as linked.

So does that mean that Brisbane will lower their offer to Allen if we don't give them what they want for Starcevich?

IF so, I wonder how the AFLPA feels about that?

Wow, only just got to listen to the Brisbane manager here. Very arrogant stuff.

For those who are unaware, when exchanging players or picks, you can only involve players or picks - so for example, having "we won't bid on your academy players" is not allowed. I've referenced this before as the reason why any pick swap with gc HAS to involve us giving them more points, otherwise it's way too obvious what's going on.

By saying that the Allen stuff is tied up with Starcevich, the Brisbane manager is getting dangerously close to admitting to breaking these rules. There's arguably a defense that he could make by saying something along the lines of "we have to get Starc's salary off the books before we can make the offer to Allen" but it's fishy as ****. I guess they've gotten pretty cocky knowing that Swann will be the guy deciding if they've broken the rules or not.

The Brisbane presser for anyone that's interested.

I'd be smug too if I'd won two premierships in a row.

FWIW picks 17 + 23 are worth around the same as pick 7, so there is nothing in it for GC to do a swap. We would need to give them extra points value this year or they are just helping us out for the sake of it and only we do that.
Not when we can promise to not bid on their players with first two selections. That's a huge points savings there.

Tom McCarthy's on our rookie list - but I don't think anyone would be happy with trading him for pick 56 if he was wanting to leave... (just saying that being on the rookie list isn't a final arbiter of value)
I would say that we will be upgrading TMac off the rookie list after next season . Young has been on the rookie list forn3 years without an upgrade

Another thing is when Brisbane were asked about bringing in players they said "We're getting in Oscar" kinda like this had been agreed upon in advance it was a sure thing.
If you’ve heard Oscar talk since the season ended he also thinks the deal is done and 100% going to happen.

He is smart enough to realise that only happens if it’s band 1. His manager would got those things ticked off with the Lions before nominating the Lions knowing their point issue already.

Think we gonna need another bed, not a double, nor a queen, a superior ultra king size bed with deluxe absorbency mattress...and a matching-sized overspill pan under the bed, with a bonus mop and bucket thrown in.
Useful tip for you is if you buy mattresses in bulk you get a reasonable discount. Found this out after the Owies trade.

So if Brisbane don't accept our offer for Starcevich and choose not to match they will receive an end of first round pick as compo anyway or is their some machinations that I'm not aware of?

I agree with the consensus that Clarke performed a lot better this year in his interview.

I also agree with the others who noted that he’s just not a confident/comfortable speaker.

For me, this is certainly a worry because in negotiations if anyone encountered someone who spoke like that in the real world, they would sense weakness and twist the screw. Having just sat through 1.5 hours of List Manager interviews it does seem all of the others speak well and with authority and confidence. Hopefully for our sake all of this doesn’t matter and we simply just get the results we’re after.

Please refrain from commenting on any interviewee quirks or personality traits without providing evidence of formal training in the field of body language analysis

Masters in Psychology and a background in law enforcement or military highly favoured

I think if the afl allows the free agency period and the trade period to overlap then this sort of thing is bound to happen.

Clarkes interview was pretty good except I didnt like this answer. Shouldve been an emphatic no chance, instead he said - Ideally and at this stage.

On pick 16 not being part of any Starcevich trade:

“Ideally, yes. We think it’s a really valuable pick and we put a lot of work into that last year getting that in, so yeah at this stage that’s going to stay with us.”

Maybe they plan on trading it to a different team? I’m sure what they say in these media interviews carries little weight in the negotiating room. Obviously impacts fans’ blood pressure though

I had a chat with Oscar and Andrew at a function in Melbs on grand final eve and Oscar was definitely not 100% certain. He said the Eagles could still match and force a trade and it was creating a bit of uncertainty with his wedding coming up and not knowing what might happen - where they’d be living etc etc.

I also think that media doorstop / presser from Clarke was bang on, a much better performance and far stronger on the key points than earlier with the AFL trade numpty. Sure the club would be providing media training and looks to be paying off.

Keys - can you please pin the presser? It’s a much more expansive overview of WCE position on key deals than the Twomey chit chat.

The AFL and AFLPA have created this mess. Free agency opened on Thursday but people have been talking about Allen, TDK etc. for months. Everyone knows Sam Mitchell met with Allen and Merrett, the Buddy to Sydney deal was done a year before it happened etc. There's no consequence for any of this stuff so what are the AFL going to say to Brisbane? 'The contract you offered in October is less than what you offered in April before you were allowed to offer anything. Naughty boy Basil don't do it again."?

Jarome Luai signed with Wests Tigers in the NRL before the 2024 season. Played the whole year for Penrith and won the GF then left and joined his new club. The world didn't end. The AFL system keeps up a facade about "trade week" because there are so few RFAs and every other move has to go through a drawn out process. We'd all be better off if OA just signed with Brisbane months ago and the compo was known. If he gets injured playing in 2025 so be it. That's the risk you take.
