I know people are having a laugh at what I said, but let me explain it properly.

If Sam Draper leaves through free agency, there’s a strong likelihood Essendon gets a first-round compensation pick — and given where we sit, that’s potentially in the top 10. If Zach Merrett decides to explore a move, the return for a captain, All-Australian, and still in his prime would absolutely be another top-end pick. Combine that with the picks the club already has banked, and yes, it’s very realistic Essendon is holding 3 or 4 selections in the top 10 of the 2025 draft.

Now, layer that onto the fact this list is already one of the youngest in the competition. Hobbs, Perkins, Cox, Tsatas, Reid — the core is there. Four more elite juniors coming in fast-tracked around them, and you’ve got the makings of a list that can challenge within a few years.

Contrast that with West Coast. They’re getting priority pick discussions despite being the wealthiest club in the AFL. They’re not maximising their soft cap, they’ve had every advantage, and yet we’re talking about bailing them out. That’s the difference. Essendon’s rebuild is being driven by smart list management and tough decisions. West Coast’s is being propped up by AFL handouts.

You can call it delusional if you want, but it’s grounded in logic. And in the long run, Essendon’s position will be far stronger for it.

Wow.

Just wow. That is a reasonably half decent troll. Excellent troll account name as well.

Players are bailing in droves and its back to the draft again for Essendon.

Priority live pick 30 to the Eagles replacing the pick value they have lost to other clubs is "bailing them out"?

Yes. Delusional is a very good description of what you are peddling here.

No one is ever going to bid on a FS/academy pick with pick 1 for the lols or be not nice.

The #1 pick gets a $10k bonus from the AFL.

If the club does bid, they are denying the non FS/academy player they would have always picked the bonus.

I agree, I've always seen it as something to do with pick 2. Although with the point differential it would be better to do it with pick 1 of course.

Just flick them $10k later.

Save the kid from the heat and spotlight of being an ex pick # 1.

Put that spotlight on the academy kid and the AFL for letting it happen.

Yep, it’s also probably not the best way to start a relationship with your number 1 interstate pick and their agent, costing them money and making them feel like a second choice.

So 7 for Flanders which finds its way to Melbourne eventually you’d say. GC likely to still be in the same boat we’ve discussed re matching everyone.

St Kilda’s F2 and F3 involved for Aleer.

“Pick swaps” for Ryan when St Kilda only have 47 left to play with does nothing for us. All hinging on what they get for Geelong I expect, if we do a deal for picks.

Makes it even harder for Steele to get midfield minutes

A swap of Ryan for Steele makes sense for both clubs IF we can convince Steele to relocate. I’d consider offering him a 3 year deal to extend the existing two years he’s contracted for at St Kilda

Steele is no doubt a good fit in terms of role and leadership. It is concerning how willing the Saints are to part with their captain without a particularly strong midfield. Flanders, Nas, Phillipou for example would get destroyed by the top midfields.

There’s also a few things in play here:

What do Saints get for Marshall? If it’s Geelong F1, I’d rather go hard for that. Ryan + 24 for Cats F1?

With the new bidding rules I think Saints F2 is very valuable with double picks needed for Walker, Robinson and possibly Cochrane if we ever get an answer.

Saints on paper have built their team nicely and cheaply (draft/trade wise) due to FA, I do think next year will take a while to adjust to bringing in so many changes in their best 23 before it starts to click in 2026.

Geelongs 1st will be pick 19 by the time its done

Pick 19 for Ryan and pick 38 is like Pick 25 in reality so feels ok.

The way GC trade they will probably give Melbourne 7 and 8 for Petracca with a 2nd going back. Melbourne love a trade up, I could see them coming to us with picks 7 and 8 for 1/2.

Even if we dont make any bids or plan to, I think we should leak to the media we are considering bidding at picks 1 and 2. At the very least will make GC crap themselves a bit and might force them to sell off some players they otherwise wouldnt.

He's all outside, which means he's limited. He'll be great in a top 4 GC side. He's an athletic beast. But in a bottom 8 side, he'll struggle.
I don't really ever give thumbs down to comments but you tempted me haha. Patterson could play anywhere, including in the centre of the ground. Moves like Judd or Yeo when he gets it and thinks like them too. He knows he has a burst of speed and evasiveness most cant match and he is already strong in the hips and will break tackles regularly after a preseason or two in the AFL.

The highlighted part is all I agree with.
