Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)

I would be taking calls for pick 2.
If Tigers and Bombers aren't super keen, we just take Duursma & CDT and grab the best mid remaining with 13 (likely Farrow or Greeves).

Happy Well Done GIF
Once petracca was off to GC we were in trouble. 3 picks in the top 15 and our nga will do just fine.

If we need to throw in a late pick, sure - but the trade is fairly balanced as is.

based of an arbitrary afl point index, which, you guessed it, has a 10% discount for anyone who wants to use, begging the question why not just have all points +10% value.

TLDR, id much rather pick 2 then 9 and 10. 9 and 10 is past the sweet spot in the draft.

edit; i realize now this is prob 5 and 6 post academy / fs. carry on.

Nobody is going to trade for Pick 2 are they? Unless we guarantee not to take Dursma with Pick 1. Isn't the only reason that clubs are interested in Pick 1 is to get Dursma?
A lot of clubs interested in moving up would love CDT. Essendon are obsessed with Willem but I’m sure they love CDT too.

Some have suggested CDT would also be a target for both Bombers and Richmond. Cal thinks they have separated themselves from the rest in the open draft.

Carlton still need to move out pick 10. Anything the club can offer to make that happen?
13+41 for 10 is about equivalent on points but not sure it's enough of a slide backwards for Carlton. Plus these 30s/40s picks are useful for our NGA.

You're spot on 5&6 (9 & 10 post-bids) is absolutely the sweet spot. You're still getting wonderful players before the talent cliff appears at 15 or so.

I would be surprised if the Tigers or Bombers loved CDT enough to do the trade, but if they are we'd be foolish not to seriously consider it.

the hard thing is you can only bring as many picks as available list spots and these picks in the 3rd and beyond are low points or worthless. GC are in a pickle, which at least points to a somewhat improved system in 25.
Yes GC will want to get Petracca deal done while at same time protecting high bids on their academy players- hence dealing with us is important.
But even if Melb are happy to take pick 7 and 13 (with GC having split 8 for three of our picks including 13), then that means GC take two lower picks (and possibly a third if Melb sends something back) into draft rather than one higher one- which doesn’t work for them given you can only carry into draft as many picks as list spots
Equally, the mooted trade with Dees of 7 and 8 for Petracca, 24 and 28 also has them carrying two picks into draft which is not ideal either

me puede dar dos coronas, por favor

These were the only words I learnt ravelling through South America

I’ve said this before but when we took McGovern I was still going to watch Eagles pre season training and doing my poxy write ups on here when I thought I was going to go to uni to be a sport journalist (I probably would’ve been better than old mate Woodcock), and he is the player I had thought least likely of ever playing a senior game, let alone being one of the most influential players for their position in modern football.

I think what I’m saying is my opinions are shit and I should deactivate my account.
I was once adamant Steve Smith would never make it with his batting style, so we all have howlers in the cupboard.

I get that sometimes, too. Post academy clarity. Pick 2 is better.

No we didn’t? We lost points, not a significant amount considering we traded the equivalent of 23 for Starcevich, but we still lost points.

Again, not saying that deal was bad, it was fine, but I’m not going to sit here and pretend like we haven’t come out second best in every other deal.

It’s not that I don’t think Young will be worth 38, it’s that we had all the leverage and once again didn’t utilise it.

I also find it funny how this board goes from “Starcevich shouldn’t cost more than the Hawks 2nd”, “Young shouldn’t cost more than a pick in the 50’s”, “Ryan is a contracted player, we’re better of keeping him than a F2” to we’ve done awesome in every deal, it’s pure copium.

Can you imagine what we’d give up if a star requested to come here?
Richmond only had picks 2 and 3 and wanted something in the thirties for their father and son Kellaway.
Picks in the fifties doesn't help them.Talks about sending Young to the psd was plain stupid with the chance we might end up with unused picks at the end of the night.
Most of the sensible people thought 41 was fair to get the deal done.
It is not like we are giving up pick 13

Would appear we’ve finalised our player trades in and out for this year, so now it’s a matter of what steps, if any, we take to improve/reposition our draft hand.

Ensuring we have the necessary list spots to fill our draft objectives will also need to be done. Depending on the status of Jack Hutchinson who might have been upgraded off the rookie list, we have a maximum of 5 main list spots and possibly only 4.

Optimally, we’d have 6 main list spots available. Cripps seems the most obvious way of adding a spot by either moving him to the rookie list or nudging him into retirement

We hold 7 picks inside the first 3 rounds:

R1- 1,2,13
R2- 34,41
R3- 53,58

I’ll leave any potential splitting of pick 2 alone for now as that’s something best left until closer to the draft. Pick 1 should be off limits

However, there maybe an opportunity to package up some of our other picks to move up the draft board - particularly with other clubs trying to broker complicated trades looking for more flexibility with their options.

On points value:

• Picks 13,34,41 = 1660 points which would give a surplus of 217 points if traded for pick 8. Had the Suns not been looking to trade for Petracca this would still have been a viable option for us despite the teeth gnashing over trading pick 38 instead of 41
• Picks 13,34 = 1440 points which would give a surplus of 174 points if traded for pick 10. Might be enough to get Carlton’s attention but they’re likely to wait and see what happens with Curnow
• Picks 34,41 = 580 points which would give a surplus of 101 points if traded for pick 29 which Gold Coast hold

If our draft hand doesn’t change prior to the draft we stand to lose pick 58, and possibly 53 depending on how many list spots we have - clubs can only take the same number of picks in as they have vacant list spots.

Where we rate Banfield, Williams and Evans on our draft board will influence how many picks we intend to use and where we hold them
Pick 10 for 13 + 34 +53 + 58 probably works. Dean is tipped to be the 4th club tied prospect to be bid on so 34 53 and 58 will go out by 3 but come in quickly once the Suns match Uwland and Patterson and once Lions match Annables.

Lions are holding 1,906 points which is about what they need but list spots will see likely trades. They hold 17 and 23 that will likely be sold off early. They also hold picks 44 45 51 and 56 which most are inside 53 and 58 and will disappear fast.

I suspect the Blues really want 10 sold for a F1

True but I certainly wanted more than 41 for Campbell Chesser and I sincerely hope the club did as well. Yes tylar has shown a bit more than Chess but he's also 4-5 years older. The fact that Richmond wanted 34 shouldn't be the benchmark price of a fair deal.
41 was a bargain. The dockers got 103 for Brodie.

It might be only slight unders we took for Ryan and Chesser. Maybe 5 - 8 draft spots lower than they are worth. And maybe we only coughed up a draft pick 3 spots higher to Richmond. But we can't keep doing that all the time. It encourages other clubs to play brinkmanship games with us on future trade weeks. They will believe that we will always cave and meet them in the middle, even when all the cards are in our favour.

It's like an employer who caves in and coughs up money every time an employee who has been let go goes and sees a No Win No Fee lawyer to allege bullying or wrongful dismissal to scrounge one last pay day out of the employer. Pretty soon every No Win No Fee lawyer in town knows your businesses name or the government department and that you are a soft touch who will pay money to make nuisances go away and you will get claims against you constantly.
