So Hawthorn have spent weeks/months grooming a player into asking for a trade. Then get to trade week, don’t make a serious offer first up forcing the negotiations into the final day whilst also trading away their most valuable trading chip

I’ve seen this movie before

Becoming quite the bunch of campaigners at the trade table. You do wonder if player managers might start to baulk at advising their players to look at moving to Hawthorn - especially when they’ve developed a habit of being rather indiscreet in their pursuit which has created problems for the player (Compare how Brisbane went about chasing Allen to Hawthorn’s approach)

I really do hope Essendon hold firm and refuse to trade Merrett as Hawthorn failing to get the deal done would likely harm their reputation. And what they’ve put up isn’t a particularly enticing offer

I also like that a player under contract won’t get his way, especially when it’s a whiny little flog like Merrett
They would of offered us the same deal with henry hustwaite if harley wanted to leave

The Hawks method Is disgusting since Mitchell is so arrogant and a flog , doesn’t care whose name gets dragged through the mud publicly..

Sounds like a Harry Potter character to be honest with you
Hawthorn tried to cast Stupefy but Essendon thought it was Riddikulus

Yeah I said this before but I don’t like that clubs like Geelong (3x first round picks for Curnow) or Hawthorn (pretty much all draft capital, plus a player they clearly don’t want in Hustwaite) are trying to basically bring in the other side’s best player, a guy a who is contracted long term, for nothing but draft lottery tickets. I’m not saying that Carlton should be asking for Max Holmes or Essendon should be demanding Jai Newcombe, but surely there’s a middle ground where you’re giving up a young guy who’s in the bottom of your best 23 but has a pretty high ceiling and would prefer to keep (like Kennedy in the Judd trade).

Like at least Sydney are offering Hayward and Florent in addition to two first round picks for Curnow, which is a lot less dog shit than the Geelong offer of three picks in the 20s.

Absolutely agree with all your thoughts.

It also raises a pretty good comparison with how we go about things. I am/was on face value annoyed at us being nice guys at the trade table over the last few years but have to remind myself there's genuine benefits to it.

Think I remember correctly we got a deal done fairly early for Brockman after Hawthorn dug their heels in (we 'caved' by adding pick 63 to our existing offer of pick 44) and someone at the club commented that we'd taken into account making the process less stressful for Brockman and his family.

The pick 38 v 41 thing this year was probably similar - if I was Young I'd be feeling far more loyal to my new club than if we'd dragged things out to the end of the trade period over three places. Given that the cost to us for these low profile trades is so low, we'll hopefully benefit long-term by the time we're starting to contend and like Hawthorn are now, actually ready to trade in bigger pieces like Merrett would be - players/agents have so much power and will likely feel confident in nominating us.

Then on the flip side compared to say Essendon we've timed things well with players who want to leave in letting them go, extracting value but still keeping the club/players united. Hawthorn botched up the Allen situation for us but I don't think we actually mishandled that on our end - and the Barrass situation felt classy all round (aside from choosing Hawthorn>Carlton's picks!!). Totally disagree with those who've bagged Barrass out - it sounded like we had some honest conversations, he read the writing on the wall and together created a situation that was best for both him and us, and he's clearly still loved by the players. We got slight unders for Ryan but again that process was kept good natured and he wouldn't have been around for success.

I honestly don't think we've actually lost anyone since Judd almost 20 years ago who was actively going to contribute to our next serious finals push. Compare that to Freo who have struggled with retention and have a track record of trading players in who then leave. We're obviously a shit side and have made poor decisions with drafting amongst other things but I do still like that we have a decent culture/loyalty vibe stemming from our handling of player movement.

Basically long winded way of saying I'm ok with the nice guy approach at this stage when it's not costing us massively. When we're about to contend and want to trade in bigger names, then I'd love for us to spend our karma/goodwill points and crank up the campaigner dial a little, hopefully we'll have learnt from the Kelly trade. But when it's pick 38 over pick 41, will try not to melt over it.

Aren't Hawthorn offering two first rounders (with one of them in the top 10) and a player (albeit a fringey). I don't think that is a terrible offer.

Are we saying a 30 year old Merrett is worth three first rounders? How many trades have taken place with three firsts changing hands? I don't think he is that good. At his age he probably only has 70 or 80 games left in him. There are not many 35 year old midfielders running around in the AFL.

Not that i am cheering for Hawthorn. I hate them as much as the rest of us. But being totally neutral and ignoring who the clubs involved are i don't think the offer that has been made is that awful.

Almost end of trade week, thank ****.

Pick split that's probably already been done to death, but I've added hording Future R3's and Future Future R3's. The theory is that they're in that 40-50 range that can be used to trade in better depth players, or traded up. More is more.

Also theorising that because this is a shallow draft & the picks being traded, while currently top 10, are going to be shunted back more than normal by the top heavy NGA picks, the buying clubs need to offer a premium that the points index doesn't dictate pre-NGA matching.

Ess (Chasing W.Duursma)
Give: 5, 6, F3, FF3
Get: 1, F4

Melb (Chasing CDT, assuming they flip Petracca for 7 & 8)
Give: 7, 8, F3, FF3
Get: 2, FF4

WCE
Give: 1, 2, 53, F4, FF4
Get: 5, 6, 7, 8, Ess F3 & FF3, Melb F3 & FF3

Could leave us selecting:
5. Dyson Sharpe (Pick 9 after NGA/FS)
6. Sam Cumming (Pick 10)
7. Aidan Schubert (Pick 11)
8. Josh Lindsay (Pick 12)
13. Blake Thredgold (Pick 17)
Match: Tylah Williams
Match/Rookie: Charlie Banfield
Match/Rookie: Koby "Kobe" Evans
Rookie: Wesley "Where's" Walley

SUNS CONSIDER BROTHERLY REUNION
OUT-OF-CONTRACT Geelong midfielder Ted Clohesy is attracting interest from clubs searching for more midfield depth.

The 21-year-old hasn’t been offered another contract from the Cats yet and will have to wait until after the trade period when list spots become clearer.

Gold Coast is understood to be considering Clohsey, who could head north to join his older brother Sam at the Suns.

Essendon has also expressed interest in the St Joseph's College product, while West Coast is looking at Clohesy among a range of experienced options with its four extra rookie spots.

After playing three games across his first two seasons at Kardinia Park, Clohesy played nine in 2025, but started as the sub six times this year and has started in that role in nine of his 12 AFL appearances.

Clohesy fired at VFL level around a stop-start year, averaging 27.8 disposals and 8.0 tackles from 11 appearances for Geelong's reserves.

Geelong is yet to re-sign Jed Bews, Oli Wiltshire, George Stevens or Cam Guthrie for 2026, while Mitch Duncan has retired and Pat Retschko and Xavier Ivisic have been delisted. – Josh Gabelich
Big fan of Clohesy. Surprised Geelong havent offered him a contract. I would throw a pick their way.

It’s pick 9 which will go out to probably 12 or 13, a future first round pick which will probably end up in the 20s, a future second round pick, and either Henry Hustwaite or a pick around 80 this year. I don’t blame Essendon for rejecting that for a guy who has won their best and fairest 6 times.

The problem that Hawthorn and Geelong have at the trade table is that everyone knows they’ll be very good the next year or two and there’s a massive difference between getting a first round pick from a team that sucks, like North or Richmond or whoever, and a team like Hawthorn or Geelong which will be playing finals and quite likely advancing well into finals.

The sad thing about this post is that it can be read unironically these days…

Lol the same people having a go at Hawks for a low ball offer for Merrett are probably the same people that had a go at our recruiting team for giving too much for starcevich.

If you want someone you pay for them.

I edited the post because Jesus Christ no, and we’re moving on.

How about those…Essendon Bombers…hey?

Anyone got any opinions on the Liam Baker or Tim Kelly trade we can burn a few pages with?
Priddis?

Not really the same situation, he was a free agent. If they hadn't poached our captain we wouldn't have traded them anything at all.

Oooh isn’t that where you keep the list of substances injected by dank?

No that got shredded with all the other evidence when Demetriou tipped them off
