Don't worry about our list yumumluv, its pretty well the best we've had on paper. Its all mental now, hope our psych's have their acts together.
Not worried at all . Just hate shit unresearched articles saying we have sold our future for tim kelly .
Sure we gave up a lot of picks but none were even high end picks and we have so many 24years and under players coming through .
Plus yeo kelly and gaff who are 3 elite mids have 5 years +
Sheed will also slot onball seamlessly when we have a few retirees .

Getting Dev Robertson back after his 2 years at Brisbane, a pure highly rated and well credentialed midfielder would be most ideal.

Hopefully he struggles getting a game and pulls the pin. Ditto Sharp, although Fold Coast have a knack of stitching us up with homesick WA players.

The irony is that the reason we were able and willing to part with so much future currency (if not with super-high picks, then certainly with the opportunity cost of trading out so we enter the draft late) is because we had set up our future so well with (in hindsight) very good drafting:

2016 - Venables, Rotham, Rioli, Waterman
2017 - Brander, Allen, Ryan, Ainsworth, Petruccelle, Brayshaw

As of the end of last year you could say there are 5-6 players from those drafts who were best 22 when fit (Venables, Rioli, Waterman, Allen, Ryan, Petch - not sure if Petch/Venables would be in the same side) - then another 3 who have played at least 1 game - with Brayshaw the only one who is yet to debut.

2018 too early to call imo, but looks to have a couple of players who will play quite a few games for us.

I also looked at our rookie drafts over those years (2016/7) - that was terrible (Petrie the obvious and only exception)

Yes.
After the Kelly deal went through it was pretty obvious that we were not in the running for some top WA talent,
As such was very happy for Jackson, Robertson,Sharp and Rivers to go East and give us a second chance in two years time.

Imo we will get Rivers in two years. And then he will do a Yeo start in defense and move into the midfield.

Rivers said the best day of his life was cheeri g the boys on at the MCG v Collingwood at the 2018 GF.

We have done well with KP players , rucks and small forwards but you can get good value with later picks. The thing with being up the top of the ladder is you need top 5 picks to get a chance at drafting A grade mids.
The following placed high in either Brownlow or AFLCA voting:

Nat Fyfe - Pick 20
Lachie Neale - Pick 58
Tim Kelly - Pick 24
Zach Merrett - Pick 26
Josh Dunkley - Pick 25
Elliot Yeo - Pick 30

Plenty of A-grade mids to be found outside the first round, including two who were traded into West Coast

Shuey was pick 18 a priority end of 1st round.

Yeah he's another one who is now arguably the best player at West Coast (although there's 3 or 4 players who have claim for that title).

Cripps at 13, Danger at 10 are others picked without a "top 5 pick", and are 2 of the best 5 players in the AFL. James Worpel was taken at Pick 45, and just won a Best and Fairest in his second year of footy.

Elite midfielders are probably the easiest position to fill without a top 5 pick

Yep - this has been a huge frustration for many fans of the Eagles for over 10 years. We are amazing at finding KPP but can't nail midfielders in the draft, unless in the first round.

I'd rather have this problem than the other way around though. Midfielders are also far easier to trade for than KPP (you would understand this well as a Bulldogs fan).

I was chatting to someone who knows Robertson very well, is a huge eagles fan,but also very loyal,if he settles in a brissie he may well stay.

I must say I get a bit confused by the whole frustration around midfielders. Through draft and trade we have a top 3 midfield in the league - Which team has done better than us with the picks available? Our midfield is stacked with A Graders.

For now.

If we don't draft and start developing a quality young midfielder properly, in 2 years time we'll be chasing more tail than Keyser back in 58.

We have been great at trading for midfielders, so it could be argued that our list management strategy is sound.

I based my comments from observations by the more astute draft watchers on this board. A number of them identified good midfield depth options with second or third rounders (or rookie picks) that the club overlooked, only to draft duds. Worpel and pickett are two recent ones that come to mind.

Absolutely - Eagles are in a better position having too many KPPs (forcing Waterman, Brander, etc. onto the sidelines) than the Dogs with too many mids (forcing McLean, Wallis, etc. out). Took years to land a single decent quality KPP through the trade period, and luckily we ended up with two. In the meantime, countless decent mids move every year. It's not exactly preventing the Eagles from achieving success anyway, considering they've traded in Yeo (A grader), Redden (~B grader) and Kelly (A grader)

They’re A graders on paper but they don’t play like it consistently. I think all of our mids are a rung below the best in the comp, and then guys like Sheed, Redden and even Gaff I think are a rung below them.

I think our side averaged out is probably the best in the comp, which makes our midfield players look more elite than they are.

eg I reckon if Essendon had our defence and forwardline, we’d be saying how stacked a midfield of Merrett, Shiel, Heppell, Zaharakis, McGrath and Smith is.
