Yeah the traditional broad base of each party is:
Labor - The working class/Public Servants/the poor
Liberal - Business, small business and the middle/upper class
The Nationals - Country People/Farmers
The Greens - Environmentalists

Broadly it is still sort of true but not wholly true.

Greens seem to be more about social issues than environmental policy now. I know a lot of environmentally conscious people who lean right that would vote greens but don't like all the 'other stuff'. Most green voters would be urban people, and the urban living environment is about the least environmentally conscious thing one can be.

So to get off politics for a bit thought I’d talk about travel.
Haven’t travelled for work since March 2019, crazy times as everything started to close down including Dubai airport.

Today I’m off to Egypt for work.
Paperwork is easy, vaccination certificate and PCR test checked at boarding gate. Compulsory masks for terminal and flight.
Only thing that seems odd is only hard copies of tests and vaccination papers are accepted, will be easy once all digital.

Testing is a nuisance. Till yesterday never had a PCR test.
Test is required to fly Emirates. Then I get tested again today in Egypt so I can fly back Thursday. I then have to do a test on entry to Dubai. My nostrils are no longer virgins!!

What surprised me is that Dubai airport is absolutely crazy busy. Huge lines for checkin etc.

Basically it seems the Middle East at least is returning to normal.

Anyway you can all get back to politics now!!

I can’t wait to start travelling again, I usually get away twice a year.

It’s been the worst part for me.

However, I’ll wait another year, I don’t fancy being locked down overseas or stuck-in a foreign hospital for weeks. Let alone be somewhere where all the facilities are shut.

I had a nice long European trip all booked and paid for before Covid started!

You and your mate Dumbo seem obsessed with where I live for some reason. It must be tough to comprehend a wider world when you don't wander out of your boring suburb and just post hate filled rants about having to put up with women's sport on tv
I think PAFC66 is more obsessed than anyone with where people live, and he seems to be very forgetful about it as he gets it wrong so often.

Women's sport on tv is not often good though surely that's not worth it from any perspective.

The world is moving socially to the left but economically to the right.
The economic right is the social right.

Don't be fooled.

Right wing terribleness goes further than just excluding the blacks, browns, yellows, homos, lesbos, and tree huggers, especially the ones that aren't rich. Even a right swing economy with true equality of opportunity is still a right wing culture.

A right wing economy by definition cannot have equality of opportunity.

We’re the same. I’m only travelling as it is a work thing and any costs etc won’t be my problem.(and even then I wasn’t keen to do this particular job)

We looked at a family holiday for Xmas but there are still a few too many uncertainties for us.
Next school holidays after Xmas are in April so maybe then we’ll do something.

Yes, we'll probably wait until late in 2022 to travel overseas for holidays. I don't want to deal with the stress of COVID while I am supposed to be relaxing. I might have a work trip to Europe in May, depending on how things look by then.

The depth of political analysis on this board basically amounts to "the more leftery it is, the more goodery it is and the more rightery it is, the more badderer it is."

Well if that's the case surely it can be countered easily by visionaries such as Papa G, Dumbo, yourself, Strappytape and that g3tw0tyadese334v guy

So gay marriage, multiculturalism, Lgbtq definition and acceptance, the focus on domestic violence and women's rights are a move to the right?

Go watch anything from 20 (or 40) years ago and the answer is obvious.

Also 20 or 40 years ago: Higher tax on individuals and corporations, more local manufacturing and local industry support, higher standard (relative to the time) of services like health and education (at least from the sound of my parent's experiences), less wage and class disparity, ability of lower income people to afford a relatively higher quality of life, more affordable material goods, etc.

Whatever has changed, has changed in balance, with a move to the right in other areas.

Bravey had me until he brought in to the gender pay gap nonsense.

Which part? It definitely exists..

It's not as simple as going bill and Stephanie are in the same job and get paid the same. It's a bigger issue of why are industries dominated by men more highly paid? Why aren't there equal pathways into shit like engineering?

Why can't hairdressers make 200k a year? 🤭

There is no right or left on the topic of not hitting women and children. But maybe I was brought up differently.

Because cultural change doesn't happen overnight, men and women are actually different still and want for different things, and a variety of other reasons easily explainable that make sense, most of which aren't directly or indirectly sexist.

Democracy in this country has long been a narrow funnel.

Choose Party A (Red) or Party B (Blue).
Both not that different.
Hence Turnbull and Rudd being interchangeable.

But something has flipped.
The whole idea of Red or Blue owning the middle ground has changed.

The far right now tries to control the Blue through capitalist conservatism.
The left is still toggling between inner city and blue collar while not changing very much (i.e. the flip on property legislation changes).

Media seems to be what is causing this divide, with the far right media becoming more so, while the CBS led left is slowing moving left.
Aunty still clinging to the middle but sliding left.

Are the media doing this to represent the US situation as we become the 53rd state or is there more to it?

In general I think we are moving to polarised, extreme positions due to technology, around the world.

With clickbait biased media on both sides, social media algorithms, and echo chamber forums, we are being divided. As a species we are finding it harder to listen to each other, and easier to strawman each other.

So I dont think its just an American thing, it wouldnt surprise me if similar was being seen everywhere.

I like how politics is literally boiled down to "what bothers you and what doesn't" and then assign your proportions to what bothers you the most and vote closest to that.

Conservatives are bothered by social progressives, who would have thought.
Nationalists are bothered by globalists, who would have thought.
As the right go further right, the left goes further left.
As the left goes further left, the right goes further right.

All because the more vocal and extreme, the more it bothers people and the more they want to **** the shit up of the opposing side.

Just ****ing vote based on your own life, experiences, wants and needs and who gives a shit what anyone else does. Majority rules you campaigners whether you like it or not, always will.

That is until you go to Afghanistan and get your head cut off by the 10% who bullied the 90%. Moral of the story is, always stand up for what you believe in and always exercise your right to vote, less you get ****ing railroaded into oblivion. Don't like someone's opinion? ****ing box them in the Maccas carpark for all I care but it sure as hell won't change anyone's minds.

So on that, I want to ****ing box Ken Hinkley.

Agreed - I don't expect an equal number of women to go into say.. construction or mining as men. Not pretending that women and men are the same.

But it's not mere coincidence that "women's jobs" are much lesser paid than men. Something like aged care, literally caring for a human being is a pretty important job but it's paid dog shit. Child care another one. Both female dominated but paid dirt.

Its also more difficult for women to reach the upper echelons in most industries.

Equal pathways into Engineering would be a backwards step in getting more females into STEM disciplines.

That would be a pay cut for the top ones.

The schlubs that work in the chain stores at Westfield? Well thats like asking why are AFL footballers paid more than Division C Amateurs.

Basic human rights is left wing 🙄. Never mind we were behind most developed nations on most of those fronts, the liberals had to be dragged kicking and screaming to accept gay marriage for instance when most countries already did it.
Seems a decent re-write of history here.

Actually it was labour under Gillard that Australia attempted to drag kicking and screaming to legislating gay marriage. Even before she stole power it was already legalised in many European countries and Canada, and it was even legalised in NZ while labour was still in office. The ALP held their ground despite this though, because as Penny Wong said "On the issue of marriage, I think the reality is there is a cultural, religious and historical view around that which we have to respect."

Turnbull on the other hand was simple, efficient and direct at getting it done - he clearly campaigned on a promise to have a gay marriage referendum which he knew would win, then legalise it, which he did.

Aged Care isn't a skilled job. Its a TAFE course and then give the job to migrants or VISA workers. And because of the nature of the actual work, no one actually wants to do it, thats why it ends up with migrants which is also why it ends up being low paid, not because its female dominated.

So yes, the job that has qualifications of a 6 month TAFE course is lower paid than the one that requires a 4 year University degree.

Probably right in regards to the first point. If it's equal, we've got the situation we have now. There is nothing stopping women from being in STEM and hasn't been for a long, long time. The issue now is incentivizing them to try and break the cycle of not considering STEM careers for whatever reason. So it's not equal, it's preferential in a sense.
