It is your right not to get the vaccine. The government has said it will be free but not mandatory.
But as a result you’ll be unable to fly anywhere and potentially be unable to attend major sporting events.
Exactly.

deskc has the right to refuse the vaccine. hes not going to be put in jail for it.

at the same time, quantas has the right to refuse to serve him based on how they want to run their business, which is that they do not want to take the health risk of transporting un-vaccinated passengers.

deskc is just the classic right wing nutjob who thinks that having rights means the ability to do whatever you want or make whatever choices you want, without those actions/choices having any reaction or consequence.

How are people gonna prove that they have received the vaccine? Will you get a sticker to put on your drivers licence or something?
The same way people already have to do with yellow fever, and have had to for years.

fyi, its just a yellow cardboard card signed by the doctor with whatever verification info is needed written on it. it could easily be something electronic attached to something like the passport or a medical id card, except the libs cant comprehend making a system which doesnt involve selling private medical information to companies for advertising or whatever.

Is there an argument to say it would be selfish and reckless for COVID free australia to mass vaccinate early?

selfish because other countries clearly need the supplies more

reckless because there are clear risks being identified. Risks which are mitigated by the alternative in some countries, but surely not here.

By all means target health professionals etc, but really? Is it smart to mass vaccinate even though the govt clearly wants the feather in its cap?

I've read that the target is for mass vaccination in Australia to be completed by the end of 2021 - that's more than a year away.

I don't think many here would begrudge the Americans and Europeans getting first access - and they will. The more sad thing in terms of equitable access would be that less developed countries would probably be the last to get a vaccine.

The selfishness is also in waiting to see its effectiveness and side effects before taking it.

If it gets approved by the US FDA and our TGA I have no qualms. Some forget that in order to expedite the process, the steps they often take in sequence have been done in parallel, such as mass production when trials haven't finished. I trust their recommendations.

In this scenario, ARE there side effects? And if there are, would it be have been selfish to wait or smart?

There’s no question this vaccine has been developed faster than usual and as a result has clearly been tested less than usual. AstraZeneca has already been shown to have misstated its overall effectiveness. I get that everyone wants coronavirus to be over, but I hope we don’t throw caution to the wind. I trust our scientists, I largely trust the government, I have less trust in pharmaceutical marketing departments.

With approvals in place, I’d take it, would be willing to be among the first, even. Not sure I’d volunteer my young children to be first in line though.

‘less developed countries usually get used as guinea pigs

For those deciding to "enforce their right" to not be vaccinated when the time comes, it might be timely to point out to them all that, at this stage, each of the vaccines appear to be preventative of the disease only, and not the infection. So whilst they will most likely offer immunisation from the symptoms, it is likely that even the vaccinated might still be carriers. There is also a chance that those who have been vaccinated will still be able to shed the virus. If the anti-vax contingent are planning on protection by some sort of herd immunity they might want to think again - or should I say, think for the first time.

That's not great news for Vaxxers or anti Vaxxers or those who don't like to be labelled every time they voice an opinion.

being antivax isnt an opinion, its as wrong as claiming 1+1=3. the whole antivax movement is founded on a single 'study' which has been prooven to have basically falsified its conclusions by manipulating the results.

Im sure the rona will take their opinions into account.

That was my point, id doesn't matter what the opinion is, its bad news all around if the the Vax doesn't stop people spreading it.

For example : if it did, and it was available tomorrow we could conceivably start travelling so long as we took the vax.
But if it doesn't we still can't let anyone come to Australia without Quarantine, until we roll out the Vax to the general population and get a pretty big uptake.

There are things that are a matter of faith, and others that are a matter of fact. Its messed up how many people don't seem to be able to differentiate.

There are a lot of people studying physics at a subatomic level. They'd be screwed if they had to see it visually on you tube for it to be real.

That there's your problem.
