So not about helping those affected by the virus. Workers in travel, tourism and recreation sectors will have much lower hours of work. Giving money to pensioners helps in no way boost demand and hours of work in those sectors.

people in any form of employment may lose income through having to quarantine themselves for 14 days. Guess which people dont lose money from quarantining? Welfare recipients and pensioners.

this is just ridiculous. They are literally the last people who should of received cash payments.

We need to keep shops open so factories remain open

This is about trying to avoid a recession

So give money to people who are losing their incomes And need income to support their families. Casual workers arent savers they are spenders. Pensioners however dont spend money. Many are too old to go to shops. They just put it in their bank account.

Yeah, pensioners don't eat and don't live in homes....

The Australian response to Coronavirus will surely be looked back in history with disdain.
Next time a pandemic looks a remote possibility we will lockdown much earlier.

Morrison's leaving cancellation "to the states". He's not a leader's arseh*le.

Yeah, pensioners don't eat and don't live in homes....
They spend a hell of a lot less then causal workers aged between 20-50 with mortgages and kids relying on them.

plus even ignoring the spending side its frankly unethical to give these people money and not workers who dependents rely on. Most pensioners have paid off their mortgages and have already earned their lifetime wage income and dont have young kids to look after.

Give you a tip, if you're on a pension a lot of what you just said isn't happening

Many live cheque to cheque, and the pension is their sole income source (esp if they were a housewife)

My parents are on a pension and so are many of their friends. They all live in milion dollar houses on the beach. They do however spend frugally And spend pretty much the same amount of money each year. 750 dollars just goes into their bank account. And they didnt deserve it in the first place.

there are people who will be struggling to feed their children ffs whose work shifts are about to be dramatically reduced. All their money will be going on expenditure. Every cent. And on top of that the marginal welfare return of the dollar spent will be 10 times higher then for pensioners.

you are wrong on who will spend the most dollar and on top of that you are completely ignoring the main point which is not dollars but human welfare.

Yeah it's shocking, and everyone at the bowls club was saying they will never vote for LNP again.

1) they are not on the full pension, they only are eligible for a partial pension and only if they are still a couple

2) more than half of aged pensioners in Australia have assets of under $30k - a tad below $1m

1) you are now not responding to the points being made and pretending we are discussing a different topic.
2) all pensioners get the cash handout so point one is nothing more then irrelevant deflection
3) primary house owned doesnt count in the asset estimate. that 30 k is on top of their house. Again what has any of this got to do with impacts of coronavirus on spending and welfare?

All of it was to show your wealthy parents and their friends are not indicative of normal pensioners. Some get by of basic foodstuffs only, so I don't begrudge them coin for a decent feed

I'll let you continue to Sook about their entitlement however

Taiwan is the model for success; direct links to China and less than 100 cases after many weeks, they reacted quickly and decisively and will likely see very little loss of life because of it. Similar population to Australia in a landmass around half the size of Tasmania.

One person who didn't report symptoms was fined AUD$15,000 - impossible to imagine such decisive action happening here.

I guess that means all pensioners are the same.

Such a selfish post.
Only if a moron would you think that. Yes im selfish for wanting my parents to have less money and give it to casual workers. Im not a casual worker and nor is any of my friends or family. You have a weird definition of selfish. Can i ask what it is?

Your pensioner parents with million dollar houses aren't really relevant to what Ned_Flanders was talking about.

He was clearly talking about people in need. Yikes.

I was in Taiwan yesterday and they certainly have got it right..very clean, huge fines for BS info on the health declaration and the staff on China Airlines are covered with masks and gloves and have limited contact with pax.

I am unfortunately waiting for my own covid result from RMH now..after arriving back from my 15 day rotation into SE Asia I’ve now developed symptoms of CV19.

Will see what happens as I am now in home isolation awaiting the phone call with results.

there are basically no casual workers in effected industries who wont be struggling as a result of this virus. There are heaps of pensioners who own houses and doing just fine. Its not a small percentage.

That wouldnt be as bad if only poor pensioners are getting the payouts. They are not. All of the pensioners are getting it. those payouts should be going to casual workers who are unexpectedly going to find a large share of their incomes are gone with kids to feed and rent/mortgages to pay. these people are the ones who deserve it.

Its weird that a so called lefty is taking the position you are. the labour unions would be furious with your view.
