Well for those of us who care... it looks like Canberra Cosmos and Eastern Pride are out of the NSL. With one more to go, Kingz were rated 13th, but are assured a spot in the next season, so 12th is.... the Brisbane Strikers.

As much as I am in favour of cutting away the chaff from the comp, I think cutting three regional teams is a mistake, and an even bigger one would be if the third largest city in Australia is left without a team. Admittedly the Strikers haven't enjoyed support from the QSF, media or public, but I will never go to another NSL game if they are cut.

I Agree!
if they cut canberra, brisbane, and eastern pride, theyre left with not much more than a nsw league. sort of defeats the purpose of a national soccer league.

I saw the thread title, and thought Cosmos and Pride must be new batsmen in the Aussie cricket team

Well Macca, it doesn't help that the Queensland Soccer Federation want them out and replaced with another team (the Brisbane Lions... no, not those ones...), the fact that the local media pretend they don't exist, and the fact that they get in the vicinity of 2,000 to 3,000 people per game... they are struggling at the moment, although it isn't entirely their own fault.

All 3 make the NSL so boring!

A bit tough on the strikers though!, hopefully they drop the Football Nobz, coz this is the AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

You are such a hypocrite QT! I wouldn't have said your beloved Adelaide Sharks/Hellas were exactly the cornerstone of the NSL either.... :p

I don't see why we should be helping the Kiwis roll us in the Oceania qualifiers... they should be kicked out on the stupidity of their name alone... which, in a league full of stupid nicknames, is a fair effort...

Cheers,
Sbagman.

Will the NSL be accepting any new clubs for the next season or will they trial a 12 team competition and see how that goes? Just asking because I know 2 sides from WA have put in applications for 2002 including Fremantle, and with the success (crowd and onfield) of Perth Glory, Soccer Australia might take them seriously.

As I understand it, more than three clubs must fail the criteria before they let anyone else in. I think the chances of them cutting more than three clubs are fairly slim, so I think the WAians will have to wait for a wee bit longer. I'd say they deserve another team though....

Cheers,
Sbagman.

Ok heres a question,

If soccer Australia introduced a 2nd division, with relegation and promotion, would that be good for AU soccer?

Ive heard of the idea, and think that the current state of AU soccer, theres no way it would work, what do yous think?

I think its a terrible idea for a number of reasons...
(1) its a cop out to keep these clubs which can't pay their players or their bills alive.
(2) it will further dilute an already massively depleted player pool (something like 100 aussies play overseas... imagine the afl without its top 100 players and you get the idea)
(3) attendances are weak for NSL games (in Brissie we sometimes get under 2000)... imagine if we were in the SECOND division.

Nup. Awful idea. Stick to 12 strong clubs, who have a chance of strengthening the local scene in Australia.
