I must admit I watched a bit of the scum v Giants game today, and realised how much big Mummy means to GWS. Without him they were like a ship without a rudder. With a bit of luck the jabbers could have won the game.

This made me think of big Pitto, he is of similar height and weight, but is ten years younger. Could we teach him to play like mummy? Has he got the mongrel to attack ball and body like mummy?

For the record Pitto is 10 years younger, 5cm taller, but 6kg lighter.

Won't get enough protection from the umpires

Mumford is a brilliant ruckman, but he's been kissed on the old fella

Got his start at Geelong when they were protected
Moved to Sydney as they became the leagues love child, then moved to gws

Mummy has mongrel - I am not sure if you can teach that.
He naturally plays like he wants to hurt people at every opportunity.

The 6kgs Pitto could pick up in a pre-season or 2 with the right weights program.

That type of aggression doesn't seem teachable. Thinking back players who have tried to add that into their game tend to do more harm than good, giving away frees and getting suspended.

Lucky for us Pitto seems to have natural aggression and simply needs to condition his body for the rigours of playing that physically every game, as well as build the confidence at AFL level to think/know he can deal with the consequences of throwing his weight around.

Pitto is naturally aggressive but I'm not sure he has the same talent as Mumford.

Mummy is more than just an old school bruiser he's also a proper good ruckman. I'll back Monky to do his magic with Pitto though. He's very raw but I think he's not a bad prospect.

Yep. Diving on top of smaller players at every opportunity knowing you wont get pinged - Mumford's career in a nutshell.

As Pitts builds his tank his second and third efforts which are already there will become more frequent. He throws his body around when he can and tackles and follows up around stoppages, its just that he is still very much a kid playing against men compounded by the fact he is getting no real support at VFL level with Fitz's ongoing concussion issues.

I really struggle to believe that Pitts is only 6 kg lighter. If you said 26kg Id think you were on the money. Mummy just looks like a kebab with the works running round out there.
Great that he's aiming high.
Mumford has had the benefit of many AFL preseasons to craft his body into what he has today. Pitto is essentially just a big school boy. Give him time to build some muscle and lose the puppy fat.

Not disputing that at all, just that I'm in disbelief, shock even, that Pitt is '6' kg off Mummy. Pitto has a good frame to work with, but would the Hawks let him go down the path to becoming a behemoth? And BTW, when have we ever developed a ruckman?

It's not that unbelievable is it? He's a big boy. Mumford likely just looks relatively bigger due to his barrell chest from many weight sessions.

True enough. But few of the big guys will dive on top of the smaller guys. Its not good form.

What is wrong with using your strengths? He's big and he can (legally) hurt people.

Your position is little different from somebody saying "these small guys can just run away from the big guys and embarrass them. It's poor form."

Did you jump up and down crying "poor Hanneberry" when Roughead used his considerable bulk to smash him in the 2014 GF?

I think Pitt's best chance of being top shelf is being that sort of crash and bash player, but I worry that our current direction of keeping our players as light as possible to increase their ability to cover the ground means we'll never let him put on enough size to really pull it off.

So he'll end up competing against guys who are playing a similar physical style as him, but are much bigger, or guys who are much more athletic and jump over him.

Still incredibly young obviously, so we still have 5+ years to see how he turns out. Very happy with his development so far.

Because most other players get pinged for it. Mumford has a career of getting away with it.

Pitto's attitude worries me. Watch what he does after games, especially losses. HE always wants to have a chat with the opposition and just stand around without showing any signs that he was just involved in a loss. I really don't like that. As a supporter I feel terrible not just for me but for the players and you can't speak to me for a couple of hours but this guy who is a part of the game doesn't seem to care too much. In my view he doesn't have anywhere near the competitive attitude required to be mummy or most other AFL players.

And...I think Pitto should mould his game around Hale. He was so underrated but I would take him and his competitive nature over any other ruckman currently playing.

a couple of hours after every loss? that's a lot of energy wasted that could just be put into drinking ;)
