Craig Interview On 5AA

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

But seriously, was mainly about tactics on Saturday and in previous games and as to why we've fallen over, Craig took alot of the blame and says he's working on it.

The usual suspects are giving him stick on here for saying this and something not more concrete, to them I ask if he already knew what he was doing wrong I'd be suspicious as to why he didn't work it out on Saturday. If he had the answers right away we wouldn't be in this mess.

You can download it here if you want.

The main thing I took out of it was that he thought there might have been a subliminal message to the players the last 2 years that just making the finals was good enough.

subliminal? he should be spelling out in really big ****ing letters.

trade week might be interesting

good. that's all we ask really. as it is, it seems like the old aphorism rings a little too true at the AFC: do what you've always done...

shake things up, have a go, try to actively improve rather than crossing fingers and hoping.

  • alot to be pleased with, but our last two finals have been incredibly disappionting
  • destination disease - subliminal message that getting to the finals is good enough
  • there is a need to be more demanding on the group
  • defence in football is becoming more sophisticated, we don't handle some defences well
  • nc said the game is moving quicker than at any other time. Ball movement is a major issue, we need to focus on that
  • support staff - doesn't sound like changes on the cards, may add one, but no one leaving
  • list management - next 2 years are crucial - spent the last 4 weeks looking at it - no def decisions
  • Stiffy hasn't spoke to nc - can only assume he wants to stay - the leadership group had a duty of care to drop Stiffy mid season
  • nc has no timeframe for Premiership, thinks its counter productive to do so

well don't hold me to it :o

Sounds like he's stolen all our thunder

He seems like a guy who's as hard on himself as the supporters are - as he should be as head coach

I like the stuff about the players thinking making finals is enough and losing the hunger. It certainly looked that way on Saturday.

He has given himself a monkey on his back so now he has to get rid of it. I still remember Mick Nunan ditching the toy monkey at the 1987 Nth Adel premiership celebrations so hopefully NC can do the same.

er, no!

talk is cheap.

accepting blame means changing things, trying to do things differently, accepting that things are not working; not saying "I accept the blame".

Last year for example, come trade week we sat their with 2 thumbs up our arse. sure didn't look like the actions met the words. hopefully this year will be different.

Last year was our most active trade week since Carey!?

Hudson, Mattner and Meesen leaving
Moran and Symes coming ...

Can't think of any club that was more active than us?

Sorry but "destination disease" is an absolute crock and so is the "subliminal messages" thing. So superior are NCs psychic abilities that all 40 odd players on the list have fallen for the old "near enough is good enough" routine. I am REALLY disappointed to hear NC talk such a load of crap publicly. These are professional athletes - they shouldn't need someone to hang up a banner saying "the aim is to win a premiership". This kind of talk infecting the club really worries me.....I didn't hear the interview and I've only seen comments on here and the Tiser Online so please correct me if I've missed the point. I've been a supporter of NC up until now.....he's on very thin ice with me now!!!

PS It's time to go.......John Reid and take the rest of the old school fogies with you.

I'm agreeing with Crow-Mo a lot lately; which is probably disturbing for him.

The easiest thing in the world to do is put your hand up and say "I made a mistake, I was wrong," - and then keep on doing what you've always done.

What Craigy said is encouraging; but until action is taken to address the issues, it's meaningless.

Of all the things to piss you off this is the one?

And if you listened you would have realised he got the destination disease theory from talks with the players, his psychic abilities still unfortunately going unused.

Look I'm as disappointed in Saturday's result as anyone - I thought that it was a winnable game and we should have gone probably another week into the finals.

But fair go - do people honestly think that we have a list that's good enough to take us all the way?

I think we finished where we deserved to finish. And that with our list, we achieved to expectations.

I don't believe that we have a stellar list that didn't go any further because of 'destination disease'. I think we didn't go any further because we aren't that frigging good.

Thanks for clearing that up Jo, it was also raised as a main point on local Brisbane radio tonight that made NC sound like a total nutter.

what do you want - a new aged healer to sit everyone in a cirle holding hands and singing kumbi yhis a?

this old school rubbish is getting beyond a joke

net sum = 0

Hudson walked.
Meesen walked.

Moran, nothing trade.

Mattner for Symes = tinkering around the edges.

the only structural changes to our team was letting our best ruckman and goalkicking forward walk for jack all.

so just for a second imagine they stayed

and we finished 7th again (most likey) so were would that have got us? probably an even worse position than we are in now.

I can't believe people still have their knickers in a knot about those two still when the benefits have sooooo out weighed the negatives its not funny.

lets be straight here. nearly every post you have made on these 2 players has been wrong.

this is no exception.

Honestly, i think the frustration here is at least partly due to inflated expectations.

I think the Tinman is spot on here. When you take a step back and look at things objectively I think our list on talent alone performed marginally better than you should have expected. Some consistent strong showings against lesser teams helped to inflate those expectations, but there were also plenty of reminders of where we really stood against the better sides.

As a coach I see that as Neil Craig's biggest flaw. He'll consistantly lead the squad that he has to produce marginally better than their "real" potential. But the approach is so clinical and emotionless that they dont have another notch to raise in the finals. Last weekend was a pretty heartless performance, i thought.

On the upside, I think he's done a pretty good job of improving the list.

So our last major trade was essentially Wellman for Jarman

Would you be willing to trade McKay plus our second round pick for Didak.

That's teh sort of thing you seem to be asking for?

You don't get something for nothing in trade week.

I wouldnt say we got nothing out of Husdson leaving.

What we got was game time into Maric, who is the best young Ruckman in the league. Also allowed more game time into Griffin to see where he is at. Hudson leaving also allowed us to play Moran and Tippett. Although it is debatable whether we would of picked up Moran if Hudson left.

We were never going to win a flag this year, and most of us agreed at the beginning of the year 2008 was going to be a development year. Rucci pushed for our club to use the "rebuild" word. A word the AFC will never use as we play to win.

BTW, there's an article on afc.com.au about Craig's views on the season which pretty much covers what's been discussed in this thread if anyone wants to go check it out.
