It was more the way the club handled the bs fallout than anything that happened at the camp.

You are correct ....we went early 2018, with a 6 win - 3 loss record ....one loss by 12 points, the other by 5 points

If the camp was such an issue ....we wouldn't have had that start

However ...from that point ( May 27th) ...the wheels definitely fell off, and the margin of losses, getting to blowout proportions

What date did the media firestorm start ?

FFS ....even our own Club can't get Curtin's name correct

One player who has impressed O’Brien throughout has been one of Adelaide’s newest recruits, first-round draft pick Daniel Curtain.

I think an irrelevant point as most players have said it wasn't a big deal to them and Jenkins and betts if it wasn't obvious before certainly post career seem difficult types so fits nicely.

but also my memory it was a slow decline rather than how you describe, betts had stopped performing by mid 2017 and sloane was worked our before the end of the year. before the camp even existed i think?

and then combined with reid losing all the young talent and signing all the old players on weirdly long contracts was always going to be difficult to keep them up, don pyke was a miracle worker i thought, should have backed him in.
Why did we have a record number of players want & actually leave the club?

Because the club was fractured following the camp... which included a major divide between the footy department/coaches & many of the players.

It's why Pyke realised he too had to leave.

It's why Burton was forced to leave.

The camp caused the most major fracturing in the history of AFC & was the reason we went from a premiership contender to wooden spooner in a very short time.

Didn't help for sure... but none of this would have gone to compete shit if not for the camp itself.

That was because Birdbrain got the Collective Minds cult back for another go mid-season... just before the disaster of the Dees game where the players basically went on strike.

Aaahhh was that the catalyst ....makes sense

Wasnt it more the purchase of the kanga machine and not purchasing the how to use it manual or course, thus destroying half the squads hammys that caused most of our issues?
That was earlier when Birdbrain was in charge of fitness... then Roo promoted him to Footy Manager to completely **** over the footy department.

betts and Jenkins didn't want to leave it was the young players getting poached who didn't care one bit about the camp but because we had mismanged the cap.

pyke left because we didn't back him in did a review instead, once we did that his authority was gone.

the spoon was won in 2020 when pyke was gone you'd have expected a big upturn in performance if pyke was holding them back, instead got the opposite!

overall I think time time will tell, but it's looking like it really was a few loud mouths and weak leadership not to back a good coach in which are hard to find

Anyone with half a brain knows it was a complete s**t show & completely fractured a squad which was in the premiership window.

It's taken us this long to rebuild the side to be back in finals contention.

Never again can we be Birdbrained!
I'm fine with the part about it being a shitshow that fractured the group. I don't know if I believe the stuff about it shutting a premiership window. I'm pretty sure we still wouldn't have been good enough even if we didn't have culture issues.

2016 was the year we bottled more than 2017. Flag ripe for the taking, one of the weaker top 8s in recent memory. A bye for whoever played 8th (us, as it went). A waning Hawthorn, a plucky but ultimately inexperienced GWS, the underwhelming Bulldogs being gifted a flag.

Should have absolutely had one flag from one of those two seasons.

Add 2005/2006 to 2016/2017.

We should have 4 flags now.

This is what I’m talking about, set aside casual expectation and entitlement and ask just how hungry are we as an organisation

I love this from the new coach of the LA Chargers, a guy who has literally won everywhere, everytime as a coach: you want it, go get it

IMG_3481.jpeg

A hungry culture doesn’t expect it to just happen, it doesn’t think we’ve got time or we’re a young team - a hungry team is ravenous for it right now

Wonder just how hungry we are? Or what our culture demands of us

Interesting discussion I was involved in around the Paer choice for captain.

I thought it was hard to judge as I do not know what type of person Rozee is. I was shocked to see he just turned 24, for some reason I thought he was younger?

I’m not sure if he is a leader on-field?

Then we went through who else could it be? Butters is next in line - maybe should be captain over CR but he has the same inexperience questions. Looking at the older players I struggled … maybe Alir or Houston?

Perhaps Connor is their best choice.

Then I was asked, if not Dawson who at the crows could be captain NOW?

Jeez. Not much choice. Doedee was probably next in line before he left. Smith? Laird? ROB? Cripes!

Sure the youngsters have future leader written all over them. Max, Soligo, Rachele, Worrell.

But you take Dawson out, there isn’t a whole lot knocking down the door right now!!

a further discussion on Rozee - You reckon they still give him captaincy if he and his partner had already announced their pregnancy?

New father / New captain at only 24 - will be an interesting season for the guy

If he continues his trajectory, or even just backs up with similar form, I'll take my hat off to him

A good number of them left before the camp.

I think you can say the camp made our situation more precarious, but there were a lot of fractures in our group even in 2017. Heck, stories of our players arguing on field in the grand final (source: Richmond players) and all of Lever, Cameron and McGovern looking for the door despite being on a contender at the time says things were bad.

Pyke left because the players mutinied under his watch. Review or not, his coaching career at Adelaide was done the moment they downed tools and gave up on 2019. Who can forget our pizza party to try to patch thins up and the players telling Don "it's too late". Credit where it's due, he fell on his sword, but he had to go.

Equally to the point, it's hard to argue that Pyke was genuinely a good coach. Sure, he was good tactically - very good, as that four tall structure we had in 2016--17 was genuis, as much as we stuck to it for too long and weren't aggressive enough to trade Lynch - but the primary job of a coach is to keep a playing group together and singing from the same hymn sheet. The fact we had players walk out despite being a contender, players arguing on ground in the grand final (source: Richmond players), and we eventually fractured to the point our players gave up to get rid of Don and Burton says Don really was a senior assistant who was promoted past his capabilities.

The opposite as we got the same results as the period where our players downed tools to ice Pyke's career here? COVID is one reason, but equally, you have to punch in the nuclear codes with a group that's got a taste for killing coaching careers - they'll do it for less the next time.

The camp was held because of the existing fissures in the playing group

Not sure how much of this is actually true
