He’s exclusively working with the girls team. Or so they announced.
Yeah, they said that... but given they have a bigger off season, surely he can help out where needed.

Not match day, but on an ad hoc basis as needed.

AFL Team Statistics

A website I stumbed on last week that seems to have some of the champion data released on it. Also it really paints a picture that we're a pretty skillful team in 2023 with our goal kicking, seeing we had the lowest expected scores v shots in the league (i.e. we took on a lot of low % shots) and weren't too far of the league average in goal kicking accuracy.

I'd love to know whether Champion Data captures xDefense in addition to xScore

As in, based on the position of the player on the ground, their speed, the action taken of players around them and so on, whether that player should have been expected to have a defensive impact

For example, if the ball was in our forward line, our defenders would have an xDefense of 0 because they are too far away from the ball to have a defensive impact

When a player is right next to another player with the ball, they would have a high xDefense

We could then look to see whether players we think provide little to no defensive impact (Sloane, Sholl, etc) actually are a negative on the team. Like if Sloane's xDefense over the match a 15, but he is actually providing a 5, his overall defensive rating would be a -10. Would be very useful to see if players should have been tackling or pressuring, not just whether they actually do.

You could also then calculate how far away players are from being in a good position to impact either scoring or defense. Eg. when a player has the ball in position X, the best positions to be in are A, B, C for maximum xScore or xDefense however the closest player was in D so they had a negative xPosition rating

Interestingly based on last 5 games (against Port, Suns, Brisbane, Sydney and West Coast) we were only ranked behind GWS.

Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood and Port were mid-table, Melbourne bottom.

And now, looking back, isn't it obvious that the destructiveness of the camp wasn't what happened at it - which was very minor - but was the club being torn apart by the gossip and mistruths?

The club made a stack of errors about the camp but at least they were misguidedly trying to get better. The complainers were just people who were disappointed no one leapt to placate them when they were upset.
Hey WeeBlake - you disagreed with the above?

I'm curious what bits you disagreed with.

Ultimately, after all of the mistruths and rumours in the media, wasn't the actual truth of the camp that some things were said to Betts and Jenkins that made them uncomfortable? That they needed to overcome challenges from growing up in unconventional family structures?

There was possibly something insensitive said to Jacobs about his deceased brother, but I don't know if that's been confirmed.

Anyway, I feel the terrible club response and constant white anting from Jenkins etc was worse than what actually happened, but curious to hear your perspective.

Deliberately excluding the club player welfare manager and club doctor from the planning and from the camp itself so that they could proceed with the grubbier elements that they knew were wrong.

Drove the welfare manager out of the club despite 90+% approval ratings (competition high I believe).

Personal and confidential information about players leaked to camp facilitators to then be used to break them down, destroying any semblance of trust.

Their solution to going forward with the program after it blew up was to exclude the indigenous players.

Quashed and not acted upon scathing doctor's report after interviewing players post-camp.

Literally, what would club personnel need to do for you to think Yeah maybe they were in the wrong here with no buts?

And blame Jenkins... that's club defence 101.

Gunston is a mummy's boy, right? All the players who left are disloyal and money hungry, right? Tippett's manager was the real bad guy, right?

You leave out the Indigenous wrong doings, yet you’re quite happy to change Australia Day because it upsets people?
Interesting take.

No, Champion Data do not capture the data of players actions without the ball, including positioning .....all data collected are actions with the ball, direct actions on opposition with the ball, and impact on winning a game .....scoring chains :whitecheck:
winning goals :whitecheck:
There's a bit of secret herbs and spices about weighting around these ....actions in D50, and F50 are weighted differently to the midfield ....and as I said, the game winning impact of a goal as an example, in a nail biting win, versus a blowout game

If you're interested, here's a full explanation of what Champion Data do track;

At best that’s speculation, at worst a batshit non sequitur

Sorry what? How many likes & reposts from his followers on instagram

What was the official reason they were sacked? They were fired I assume - no? ;)

Personal and confidential information about players leaked to camp facilitators to then be used to break them down, destroying any semblance of trust.

If that’s true, it’s a crime and no mention anywhere of that being established

If I recall, and I might have this wrong, but didn’t the players admit to sharing information in pre-camp questionnaires?

Their solution to going forward with the program after it blew up was to exclude the indigenous players.

Oh yes?

Was this like Betts cracking the shits over a sacred artefact he claimed they didn’t have permission for, which turned out to be from a different tribe where they had all the requisite permissions for?

Nothing strange about that at all

Quashed and not acted upon scathing doctor's report after interviewing players post-camp.

Not acted upon? Who runs the organisation.

A couple of players demanding their views be acted upon, a club advisor demanding his views be acted upon?

What were these demands?

That’s part of the problem, deranged entitlement

Literally, what would club personnel need to do for you to think Yeah maybe they were in the wrong here with no buts?

They should have jettisoned the troublemakers earlier than they did.

Don’t forget the playing group split because they didn’t agree with these whiny, self-important, disgruntled types

It wasn’t players versus club. It was club, players versus a tiny of handful of bad eggs leaking to the media

And blame Jenkins... that's club defence 101.

And a good one. A very sound and appropriate strategy

Gunston is a mummy's boy, right? All the players who left are disloyal and money hungry, right? Tippett's manager was the real bad guy, right?

The Gunston story has always been a complete fabrication

Cmon Sanders, tell us what you think about CM and the ppl who hired and defended them
Anyone with half a brain knows it was a complete shit show & completely fractured a squad which was in the premiership window.

It's taken us this long to rebuild the side to be back in finals contention.

Never again can we be Birdbrained!

we won't know for sure until they all retire but so far history seems to be showing most didn't care and it was a couple of players that had a problem so you can't say it fractured the group even if you eagerly want to!

You are living under a rock then!

How else to explain why our performances fell off a cliff then?

Coincidence?

I think not!

I think an irrelevant point as most players have said it wasn't a big deal to them and Jenkins and betts if it wasn't obvious before certainly post career seem difficult types so fits nicely.

but also my memory it was a slow decline rather than how you describe, betts had stopped performing by mid 2017 and sloane was worked our before the end of the year. before the camp even existed i think?

and then combined with reid losing all the young talent and signing all the old players on weirdly long contracts was always going to be difficult to keep them up, don pyke was a miracle worker i thought, should have backed him in.
