There's definitely 2 sides to the argument. Personally, I think Port should be allowed to merge but the SANFL arrangements should remain the same (with players divvied up amongst all 9 SANFL clubs).

Who to barrack for if/when the Crows Reserves play Norwood and I'm a supporter of both?

Exactly, the Port situation is different they can just follow Port in the SANFL, if the Crows get a reserves team in who do I then go for? People like RL who love North who do they then go for?

Same here, but my 1st prefrence would be the crows 2 team.
Another good thing to consider is, if/when the new city stadium (AO or New) are built we will play our reserves home games at a smaller scale footy park. It would still probably get between 5 and 10k on days that don't clash with the AFL team. Thus allowing the club to continue to use the new shed for before and after match functions.

This has been done to death, the SANFL don’t want and have never wanted the AFC to have a reserves side as they suggest it will damage the integrity of the SANFL. If the SANFL don’t want something to happen, it won’t happen.

Steven Trigg says “The initial merger model, which was developed before Christmas, had the Port Adelaide Magpies staying in the SANFL, but as the Power’s reserves side.” To me, the Port Adelaide merger model was shown to the SANFL commission and they have said NO, then to make this work, the Port Adelaide merger model was altered to change the reserves side of it.

End of story, the SANFL commission don’t want this to happen. END OF STORY.

However, hypothetically should this reserves side eventuate?

I believe there will always be a market for all levels of supporters for all clubs.

I don’t believe the Crows will saturate the local level supporters market and cannibalize their supporter base. Being an AFL football supporter is an expensive sport and every year the cost of attending AFL football is increasing. Football in Adelaide is a community event; add this to the high cost of AFL football will always give the local clubs a market to promote their own products to. They should get out into the schools and communities and show they are a viable option to the not so affluent people who like and enjoy football.

Football is no different to any other product, if the clubs get out into the community and show the kids they are important – they will support them. And generally people are loyal, football supporters are not different.

I love the idea from a Crows point of view (and I'm not exactly a die-hard SANFL supporter) but can't help but feel it would be the final death knell for the SANFL. It's not an exceptionally strong comp at the moment but it's still breathing for the time being.

Can only help the Crows if it happens, though.

Crows fans generate a lot of support to each SANFL Club (Bar Port really). Aligning a reserves side would allow us to look at prospects and manage our youth a lot better but would damage the comp a lot.

I love the idea, just for the fact it would be great to see all our young players playing together, I feel it would be better for their development.

However I cant see myself stopping supporting the Bays, even if they played against the Crows. Be a weird situation.

I love the idea of this happening :thumbsu:.

1. It would give the SANFL an even team league
2. The crows players can play together
3. The players can be developed and played in the spots that we want.
4. Crowd attendances for the SANFL would increase.

with who? Where does the AFC source all the other players needed? There will always be injuries keeping anywhere between 2-7 out each week add that 22 playing AFL and a travelling emergency (maybe 2) every other week. The Crows would need 15 rookies to make it viable and not have to rely on a bunch of scrubbers pulled out of A1 somewhere.

I wouldn't barrack for a Crows SANFL team, I would watch them with interest from a developmental POV but thats about it. It's also the final nail in the SANFL as a comp, it has already been marginalised, if you then just start adding made up teams into the mix it loses all integrity.

I realise this isn't going go down well but....
I think the VFL and the SANFL should merge for a single comp.

the SANFL has a long and proud history don't get me wrong but I do believe it would provide a great 2nd tier level of football that would retain the existing SANFL clubs AND allow the Crows and Port to have single teams.

The comp would get uber funding from the AFL due to the development opportunities.

Strong No to this, why can't the two Adelaide AFL clubs just let things be.

Will never get voted for by the SANFL clubs so why keep harping.

Plus If you don't like Football Park's facilities, I can't see you enjoying Woody Oval or the Bay during the depths of winter.

I would have thought the ressies would be an AFL curtain raiser.

If anything, this would INCREASE interest in the SANFL.

I'm not so sure that it's completely dead and buried. Why would Trigg raise this as a possibility if the SANFL have already outlawed it completely?

I agree that it's highly unlikely, for the reasons you outlined. But clearly the possibility still exists or Trigg would not have made the comments he did.

I don't like it, would destroy the SANFL

Not really being seriously talked about, although on the Port site you would think the sky is falling in.

Responsible for their current plight is

S Trigg
Cornes
Rowe
5AA
Leigh Whicker
Max Basheer
SANFL
Demetriou
All Crows fans
the rest of the world

In fact everybody but the Port admin/club

Why they expect help from the Crows is entirely beyond me. S Trigg has a role to ensure the best solution for the Crows is reached here. We are rivals. Port are irrelevant to him. Increasingly irrelevant to many really

I found the joking Port tops in the other thread where the main sponsor is us to be quite ironic, cause the Crows have been keeping SA footy alive here for the past few years now.

AFC --> $ --> SANFL --> $handout --> PAFC

Akin to the 'house that Michael built' in reference to the United Centre in Chicago, the AFC are football in State, everyone else owes their sustainability to 20 years of the Crows.

Merits aside to me this just sounds like a tactical move to torpedo the Port merger.

FWIW I'm against it and I don't accept the SANFL already died line as valid. Yes it did alter in 91 but it maintained its fundamental character as a relevantly even league. Either or both of the AFL sides having "reserves" would kill this.

As far as I am aware the AFC doesn't get a vote one way or the other, Port just have to put it to them out of courtesy.

Merger is over the line, Norwood, Sturt, West, South and the Eagles will vote yes with North, Glenelg and Centrals a no, and I expect Centrals to be a swing, it will be 5-3 or 6-2.
