Well done to the Kiwi's on winning the inaugural WTC.

Which brings me what would be the best combined side at the moment ? Surely the Kiwi's would feature heavily.

Warner
Latham (NZ)
Williamson (NZ)
Smith
Taylor (NZ)
Labuschagne
Watling (NZ)
Cummins
Wagner (NZ)
Southee (NZ)/ Hazlewood
Boult (NZ)

Conway & Pucovski just not enough games at the top level to consider.

How could I NOT include Jamieson !!

No allround option in Green or DeGrandhomme

And no Lyon.

I don't think any of NZ bowlers have the career record or even the recent record to be picked in front of Hazlewood especially considering Hazlewood plays the majority of his matches in Australia and still has that record.

Just shows how strong this NZ side is

JH is a gun but he is one guy who is built to not be inconvenienced too much by Australia’s ordinary decks. I would have him in a combined team but he’s not someone I look at and think ‘wow how do you get wickets on Australian pitches’ whereas Cummins I think probably encounters more factors that make it difficult for him as he’s not as tall

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring & suggest that out of the current crop Watling, Williamson, Taylor & Boult are all locks for NZ's ATG team.

Latham not too far away, but not sure if he dislodges former openers such as Sutcliffe & Turner.

Southee & Wagner (as well as Jamieson in a few years) are also knocking on the door, but can't see any reason to pick them ahead of Hadlee, Bond or even Jack Cowie just yet.

NZ ATG XI

Glenn Turner
Bert Sutcliffe
Kane Williamson*
Martin Crowe
Ross Taylor
John Reid
BJ Watling+
Daniel Vettori
Richard Hadlee
Trent Boult
Shane Bond
12th: Chris Cairns

Is this the first time in history when an Australian team is not the best test team down under?

I like this team. Good selections, with a lot of recent players, which shows how weak we have been historically and how good the current team is.

Latham over Turner for me, Turner opted out of international cricket, he can get stuffed. Lots of stories about him being an absolute campaigner of a bloke too. Could absolutely play, but too dour.

I'd maybe swap BJ to BMac too, although that's a line ball decision. Reid/Cairns the same. Don't think Bert and Cairnsy in the same team would be a good idea, although the after match parties would be great!

It would be interesting to see Sutcliffe and Reid in a strong team.

I know there’s already an all rounder there with Hadlee. Well two really with Vettori. But I’d find it really hard to leave Cairns out. Admittedly his disgraceful end to his career tarnishes this but he was a super cricketer for a decade

Depends what you mean by "down under" I guess. South Africa have been a better side than Australia on a few occasions.

If we're just talking about Aus/NZ, the Kiwis were most certainly superior to Australia in the 80's & defeated them several times during the decade both home & away.

Cheers. Yeah, I have no issue with Latham over Turner. Would probably add more impetus to the top order too.

BMac is a great shout. However, when selecting ATG sides I like to pick specialists. I think Watling is pound for pound better with the gloves than BMac. Though arguably BMac adds more to the team as a whole when his batting is brought into the equation.

Was hard to leave Cairns out, but I felt Reid adds more variety to the bowling attack since he can bowl both offies & mediums.

The thing with McCullum is he was nowhere near as good with the bat whilst he was wicketkeeper. If you select him as keeper then you have to take him on his batting-whilst-keeper record, in which case Watling trumps him (and is a better gloveman to boot).

You could almost have him in as a batsman only by the same logic though i.e. if you ignore his keeping matches, he averages 42.94 which puts him right up there on the New Zealand record board. He is the perfect number 6 too, so I would have him in as a batsman over Reid (disclaimer: I don't know a heap about John Reid except for his statistical record).

Very true. McCullum could easily earn his spot as a pure batsman alone & I wouldn't need much convincing to select him. McCullum would certainly be a lock in NZ's ATG ODI team.

I'm far too young to have seen Reid either, but maybe the best way to describe him would be to call him the Shakib-al-Hasan for NZ in the 50's/60's. He did everything.

Agree. Only spot up for debate really is the first change bowler.
I didn’t realise Watling’s record was so impressive.

Latham
Warner
Labuschagne
Williamson
Smith
Watling
Cummins
Jamieson
Hazlewood
Wagner
Lyon

Fitting 6 of the best fast bowlers in the world is a very hard task, Southee and Boult can take any of those guys place but Cummins

IMO Australia and NZ probably have 6 of the best 10 fast bowlers in the world in test cricket. Others being Rabada, Bumrah, Anderson, Broad

This is very biased but I’d take broad or Wagner out and bring Roach in. Broad has had a better career than roach obviously but isn’t currently as good
