Daicos - A Once in a Generation Player

Saying that is the easy part. Now tell me: who makes way for him, considering guys like Coventry, Lockett, Baldock, Carey, Hutchison, Bartlett, Dunstall...etc couldn't make it (admittedly, Carey was pretty early on in his career)?

Daicos would be the equal of any of the mids or small to medium forwards that ever played so from Steward in the centre to Skilton as the rover to Jeza on the flank - Daicos could slot in. They were all greats as was Daicos. None of them stand above him. The only player I have ever seen comperable would be Mathews. Very different styles but in terms of being an all time great on baller AND an all time great froward they are the two candidates. Bartlett would be number 3 but not by much. I'd give it to Mathews becasue he was also brutal.


Comparrisons accross eras are difficult and supporters of clubs will generally rate their own higher but I can confidently say Peter Daicos is the best Collingwood player I ever saw and that includes Carman who may actually be the most talented. I am not quite old enough to include Greening in any comparrison but people I have spoken to that would know rate him right up there.

So he is better than Polly Farmer, John Coleman, Bob Skilton, Leigh Matthews, Andrew McLeod, Michael Voss, Jonathon Brown Anthony Koutafides, James Hird, Simon Madden, both Gary Ablett's, Luke Hodge, Darren Jarman, Wayne Carey, Matty Richardson, Rob Harvey, Tony Lockett, Chris Judd, Ben Cousins, Matthew Pavlich, Nick Riewoldt plus many many more?

Freakish ability his up there.. but theres more involved to be considered one in a generation or top 3 of all time which is laughable

you should of read what i wrote properly, you were paying out on Daicos cause of his lack of B&F's, well Ablett has a lack of B&F's but most who saw him put him in their best 3 of all time.

Once in a generation? What exact generation was that? Are we talking the 80's, the 90's or both combined? Are we purely talking about small forwards? Because if not there are even more I'd take ahead of him.

He isn’t once in a generation he’s once in a lifetime.

All those freaky goals from Macedonian marvel yet his career average sits at 18 pos and 2 goals and won 2 B&F’s…

How many players averaged 18 pos and 2 goals to that time? (I have no idea).

Daicos didn’t even win the B&F in 1990 when he had the best small forward’s return all time – AFL all time not just Collingwood’s. Tony Shaw won the B&F that year and Graeme Wright missed the Brownlow by 3 votes. Very effective players but hardly in Daico’s class. I mention this just to put B&F (and Brownlow) voting into perspective at the time. Buckley won 5 Copelands and Daicos was a better midfielder than Buckley let alone also being a better forward.

Let’s not forget he played at full forward, so lets not deflect from the fact that the ball was often going to him unlike say Milne at St Kilda or even Didak now especially in that era.

He never played FF. In 1990 Mathews moved him from the centre to a pocket because Collingwood couldn’t kick enough goals to win the flag. Until the finals Brian Taylor was the FF and for the finals it was Gavin Brown – remember 5 goals in the first half of the semi from Brown?

In 1990.. 7 possesions, 2 goals in a pumping.

He kicked nearly half as many goals as the entire Essendon team and as many as anyone else on the ground. Without his remarkable goal v WCE he wouldn’t have even been there on that day – nor any of his team mates. The thing with so many of Daicos’ goals is that but for him they wouldn’t have existed. He didn’t get on the end of a pass he created opportunities where no one else could have. That is rare talent.

yes but the point is he wasnt a full forward by any stretch...thats what made his exploits more extraordinary for a midfielder to do what he did - imagine a 2 nd year player at 19 yrs of age (skinny and barely six foot) starting the season like this:

r1 -6 goals
r2 - 6 goals
r3 - 6 goals
r5 - 7 goals
r10 - 9 goals

Well in 1982 just as you were born he did ^^^^ as a 19 yr old. Imagine a monfries or zaharakis doing that in their 20th or so game...anyway, you are clearly trolling my thread - enuffs enuff!

FTR I never said he is top 3 he would be top 25 all time for me and its the total package not stats that makes it so.

And the reason he is one in a generation/million or whatever is that he is unlike any player ever in an all round sense - yes there are many who can dribble a goal, or baulk players, or kick well opposite foot or kick a torpy or get 35 possies and hit their target most times, or take one handers, kick miracle goals each week etc etc but he is the only one that could do it all...end of story!

I Cant comment on Skilton and COleman was a FF.
I put him on a par with D.Jarman and behind L.Matthews and can't compare him to McLeod because he's a midfielder cum HBF.

If the OP had simply titled it "Daicos - A Tribute" then 99% of posters would have come on and said "Yep, great player."

I remember reading a few years ago that either Gayfer or Kelly said you'd be sitting on the toilet at Victoria Park after training and a footy would come under the door because Daicos and McGuane would be in the dunnies practising the "Daicos dribble" and trying to bounce the footy into the toilet stalls.

Dont think it has really...just one person (my bro in law who loves to stir trolling but hopefully he is gone now!). I think 99% have done this and I put the title in on purpose to spark debate as he is a unique player that I feel deserves this title - I'm on record for saying he is top 25 all time for mine (while many dont agree - not even in mike sheahans top 50) as a player but I think he is also in a very special category for players that have changed/impacted the game.
