Daicos - A Once in a Generation Player

If Daicos was playing today, with full time professionalism and the increase in goal kicking ability, he would be kicking goals from his teams' kick outs using a drop kick that went over his head.

If John Coleman was playing today he'd be the first player to kick 300 goals in a season..

MP, you have a really annoying brother in law. I'm still getting my head around the fact he is actually around 28 years old.

I'm still p1ssing myself at the bloke who put Rhys Jones AND Motlop in the same category as the marvel.

And how did your mother in law get to see you with your strides around your ankles magicpants??? Without you even knowing!

lets just say there was a fair bit of alcohol involved...and FTR magicpants is a tribute to two greats daicos and millane...not my ability to make my pants disappear :D

My Favourite non Blue hands down.

Pretty hard to to include him in the TOC over any of the selected players, but would definately be in the 2nd 22.

Yep the guy was a genius - loved watching him and his goal kicking (either foot, from angles or distance, in the air or the patented dribbler) is peerless.

Watching the youtube highlights reel made me think a couple of things:
  1. Has any player - past or present - got a better 4 minute highlight reel than that?!
  2. With the improvements the modern players have made in replicating the dribble kick why have they not turned their attention and skills to bringing back the torp? With zones these days a player who can consistently dob one from 55+ (ala Daics) would be worth his weight in gold.

Great thread - thanks Magicpants!

Unlikely.

I would also argue that you could extend his to 10 minutes and not reduce the quality!

haha.. let's just say I don't know any Collingwood supporters... yet I can 'fully sickly' grasp the concept of a 'one eyed Collingwood supporter' just from knowing magic pants for the past 20 years... this has been fun.. could care less about Daics..

lol.. u should hear her tell the story.. a magic moment for sure and great ammunition for ribbing at ever family do..

I watched every game he played in Victoria. I still have my Daicos garden gnome with the number 35 sitting proudly in the backyard.
His son has played at Auskick along with Kouta's son and my little boy.
Daic's son baracks for Carlton and Kouta's son sports a Magpie jumper.. LOL

Perhaps on the bench in place of Diesel. Diesel was good, but Daics was on a level all of his own.

I was planning to post something about how great Daicos was and my surprise at how generally unacknowledged his feats go in modern times; but I can't let this post pass without comment ...

Diesel's the best midfielder I've seen play and was as much a freak as anyone in his own way; no way he'd be nudged from that team by Daicos.

diesels hands were so quick, he was slow as buggery at times but it didnt matter, he was so effective in the centre.

Depends what you consider good viewing, some people rate marks, some goals, some prefer selling dummys and making defenders look stupid.

I'd say some videos could be made for players like ablett, carey, modra, motlop, milne, judd and probably more i can't think of.

How dare you put him in the same league as Motlop. Daicos had consistency right through his career and Motlop is half the player Daics was.

may I recommend you to the:

I said to someone recently he was 10 to 15 years ahead of his time with his goal kicking from angles along the ground etc.

well I hope that someone told you how wrong you were.

in Today's game he would be encouraged to centre it and play the percentages.

he was absolutely a product of his time, and certainly not ahead of it.

I imagine you have a lot of triggers for your incontinence, maybe a lack of reading comprehension is one of them? do make sure you clean up after yourself though, think of those poor care workers.

Rhys Jones was the most sublimely skilled player of his generation (and a nutjob). Motlop (also a fruit cake) is easily as skilled.

which was in relation to the claims about his incomparable skills.

Daics always gets remembered for his goal kicking, but he was an amazing centreman before he did his knee. Was an incredible clearance player and his foot passing was as good as you could see. And he kicked big bags of goals playing in the middle. Ridiculously amazing player.

People used to think he fluked it all the time. But Gavin Brown talks about in his book that Daics would consistantly practice the dribble kick and the snaps from the angles all the time at training.

I don't think there has been a player who can snap like that. I'm glad other supporters are able to put the anti-Collingwood bias aside and acknowledege him as the Marvel he was.

Ok so he wasn't quite as prolific goal scorer as Ablett, Dunstall and Lloyd. But Daicos probably had more "entertainment" factor than at least Dunstall and Lloyd combined. (Ablett I admit could be a freak as well)

I would suggest the only player that might have come close for pure "excitment" might have been Buddy Franklin during 2008.
