Apologies for my recent topics/ posts not being their usual informative/ detailed posts but I'm more so at the moment interested in hearing peoples views on particular ideas and topics as opposed to playing general manager/ coach 24/7.

Which brings me to Dale Thomas. Will he ever reach his potential? Will he have a breakout year in 2010? Hate him? Or love him?

Personally I'm a fan of his game, love his flamboyant style of play. When he is on, he can light it up and doesn't need all that much of the ball either to have an impact. Without a doubt one of my favourite players in the competition to watch. I'm starting to get on his bandwagon for dream team/ super coach for season 2010. I think he will take his game to another level, but to what extent? Who knows? I think he can lift from a 18/19 disposal a game player to a 22-24 disposal a game guy with his niggling injuries hopefully behind him. Definately a player I will be watching closely in 2010.

Average player, only looks the goods when the pies are on top, to much of an outside player, those goals along the boundry will only last so long, he needs to prove a point and win his own ball, much happie with xavier ellis

You have another 20 days to make a name for yourself in the Winty award this month, Jiggy. Pace yourself, quality over quantity. You can do better than that.

Xavier Ellis was highly fancied to go with the no.2 pick, for Collingwood I still think Thomas was the right pick.

Naturally being someone who has followed the draft pretty closely for the last few years I have tracked both players with interest.

Ellis has shown a bit and don't mind his game, I think he will develop into a quality player, but I still see Thomas developing his game further. Last season he was held back by a knee injury and played in more defencive roles which made his output appear dampened at times. Expect him to be revitalised and back to his attacking best in 2010 and into a more offencive role in 2010.

yeah wtf jiggy, you are dead wrong.
Dale is often one of our best players in losses.
With Swan tagged and Pendles heavily matched up, Thomas is sometimes the only mid free.
And he doesn't let us down, always breaking the lines.

I am a massive fan and think he could be something really special if he doesn't let things get to his head. He sees a gap and takes it, that's what I love.
He's still a twig, and will need a few more years to build his tank due to his shape, but when he get to his mid to late 20's, he will be an absolute star.
Already is for his age/body type

Undoubted flashes of brilliance but consistency wise he aint up to it, he even looks to hold back for the flashy stuff, will have to wait and see if the little boy bulks up, Ellis in the middle finding targets up forward is a much better prospect

I don't expect a "breakout year" (whatever that means) like people have been suggesting for him for the last few years, but I think he will improve from his last year form, and spend more time in the midfield. WOuld love to see him as an attacking small defender, but that won't happen.

People also need to stop expecting him to put on much weight - he will not.

Good player, clearly in our best 22.

Dale Thomas will not break out. He is clearly lacking in lung capacity. That isn't his fault, its an unfortunate fact. He will always be inhibited by this and ultimately will be the difference between him becoming an all-round star.

This doesn't take away from the fact he is an excitement machine. Corageous, skilfull and bloody quick on his feet. He has an excellent and accurate kick which is deceivingly penetrating. I remember his debut game he took an absolute screamer and follwed it up with a goal where the man on the mark was on the 50.

He has and will be serviceable, not to mention a good example for the younger players to learn from in how to bust a gut.

We don't care about Xavier Ellis. He doesn't play for Collingwood. This is about Dale Thomas.

I have found this as an interesting comparison. He has been likened to Gary Ablett. It doesn't mean that he will become exactly like him but he has the attributes like him. If he could regulate his burst speed and stamina he could become an important player who would be hard to match up on, a match winner.
Gary Ablett did not start off as a high possession winner. However, improved his fitness to become an important midfielder. Here are two lots of stats. One is of Dale Thomas and Gary Ablett at the same age. The other is Gary Ablett a year older than Thomas now so the next season.
Interesting...

You obviously didn't watch him last season. He was basically there to learn different roles and be less flashy. He was less flashy this season than he has ever been (do you remember him taking a specky in the actual proper season?).

He was more consistent, while he was learning as well (averaged more possessions than he ever has). He played a whole variety of roles: defending forward (shutting down Brisbane "quarterback" Josh Drummond twice); rebounding defender; midfielder (finals); small forward (3 goals against Brisbane, while shutting down Josh Drummond at the same time); tagger (he beat Chris Judd).

The only people that think he is crap are opposition supporters. If he wasn't wearing the black and white stripes and didn't have long hair, he wouldn't get bagged so much; opposition would probably even like him.

I haven't heard anything about Xavier Ellis since he was drafted, so I am definitely happy with DT.

Another myth is that he is a downhill skier. That is an absolutely stupid thing to say about one of our hardest workers in the team. Remember him against the Bulldogs this year? He won the match for us, that is NOT downhill skiing. How about against Adelaide in the finals? One of our best on the night. He didn't give up when we were 5 goals down. He was one of the guys that dragged us back into the match. One thing I will always remember was after Kurt Tippett put the Crows back in front, with a couple of minutes left on the clock, the ball went into the Crows forward line and Dale went after it and smashed heads with another Crows player. While the Crows player hit the deck, Dale just shook it off and ran around a couple of Crows players and kicked it out of our backline. Eventually this kick led to Jack Anthony kicking the winning goal. Don't EVER accuse him of downhill skiing, because that is complete bullshit.

Another thing that annoys me is people saying he should get his head off TV. How does appearing on the Footy Show make you play bad? Or appearing in a commercial? Plus he is arguably the most popular player in the comp, he's a hero to kids and he is making money doing this, so why would he stop? Doing those things isn't going to affect his game. People might get sick of it, but why would he give a **** about them? He's the most popular football player for the biggest football club in Australia, while the people whinging are probably pimply virgins that sit at their computer all day. If you don't like it, you can change channels, mute it or turn the TV off. So stop complaining you sooks!

To answer your questions though, knightwheelrqr; Dale has massive potential. He will reach it, don't you worry. He's a very determined lad. Here is a quote from Paul Hudson in the latest issue of Black and White magazine:

Showed at times that he is very difficult to match up on, and he was able to play some excellent defensive roles for us. Spent more time in the midfield which was a good learning experience for him. The challenge for Dale is to improve his aerobic fitness. Overall he had a solid season; he's still young and has so much improvement in him.

2009 was Dale's best season yet, in my opinion, but it was just the tip of the iceberg.

I just want the bloody season to start already!:thumbsu:

Did you even watch out Finals game where we got Flogged he was 1 of our better players. Ellis is overrated anyway

maybe because Ellis stays by himself away from Traffic and is very much an outside Player.

Daisy can change a game of his own boot but I doubt ellis could

He's been working hard on his running. The mrs kept seeing him running down Dundas street in Rye during the holidays. She nearly ended up having a head on with a tree each time.

She's in to him which seems a bummer for me, but what I lack in stardom I make up for with quickness in the bedroom.

I think all Pies Girl Fans have a Crush on Daisy and also he went early to Arizona,

Really setting himself for a Big Season:thumbsu:

A question mark over Daisy is his disposal. Though he can kick well at times, he lets himself down with some poor disposal - kicks that skid along the ground, passes that don't connect etc. He has to improve the quality and quantity of disposals to move to the next level.

With high altitude training it could certainly be improved. So it should still have scope to improve quite significantly over the duration of his career.

His finals series in 2007 was memorable and really liked how he lifted his game to a whole new level. He just went like a jet and took his body further than many recognise. Certainly wouldn't describe his as being "soft" as I'm sure many opposition supporters would.

ellis is good but personaly i think thomos is better. but i rekon the steal off the draft could be shaun higgins at pick 11 superstar not saying his better then thomos but diffently has ellis taken care off dont use agree??

Lester Ellis should stick to boxing and Jiggyspoon should stick to Bay13.

Lol how creative... Ironic that a Collingwood supporter would suggest that I stick an area of the MCG where bogans and ferals are prevelent, I guess we will find out about Thomas this season, if he turns it up and has a big year I will be the first to stick my hand up and say I was wrong, but lets just wait and see :thumbsu:

Jiggystoon??? What a stupid ****ing name.

Higgins was certainly a very good pick. Would rate him as being equal to Thomas. Higgins has had injuries, and if not for that I would rate him well ahead of Thomas to date.

From that draft I still like Pendlebury as my pick of the draft. Captain material and already amongst the best mids in the league. Will only get better.

Ellis was still a good pick, just for Collingwood with Maxwell, Harry O, Goldsack and other medium size backs Ellis would be pretty redundant while Thomas is pretty unique to this side which is why I'm still in favour of Thomas.
