Injury Dane Swan

Depending on how he recovers from the foot surgery, this injury could ironically hold Swanny in better stead (fitness-wise) for 2017, with one less season of general wear-and-tear as a result of sitting out 2016.

I guess it all depends on how the rehab goes and how he feels in 12-16 weeks time, once the cast is off and he can begin moving around. Does he still have the hunger to compete at the highest level, something tells me swanny will be back!!

I would just like to caution people that a podiatrist is not a doctor and is certainly not a surgeon.

What he says may be right and I'm sure he's good at what he does but I'd still be waiting to hear what Swan's actual surgeon says.

I hope he comes back so he can retire on his own terms. One of the greats and the best Collingwood player of the last decade.

Totally agree. To me he is incredibly underrated and should be viewed on the same level as Bucks and Daicos.

Is Swanny underrated?
Either I overrate him, or others underrate him. I consider him to have been the equal of Judd, Ablett Jr, Buckley, Hird and Voss. Very few others would agree with me. Sam Mitchell is the other whom who I'd put in the same underrated category. Both of them are unfashionable superstars.

Agree even to the extent of saying he is a level or 2 above Daics. Daics never dominated the competition like Swanny did.

I agree with you, but used Daics's name because I know how highly many others rate him.

lets not get carried away, look at his stats prior to doing his knee, didnt pull on the big V 5 times for being a slouch

Daics was jaw-droppingly brilliant and a revolutionary in terms of being bale to predict and control the bounce of the ball, but his body stopped him from ever being particularly close to the most dominant player in the league.

Ummm no. Daicos would have been just as prolific a mid as Swan if not for his dodgy knees. Even then he was able to kick 90+ goals in a season as a small forward, numbers traditionally reserved for key forwards.

He dominated plenty.

Agree. But to say Swan is a level or two above him is a bit of a stretch. Talent-wise I'd take Daicos every day of the week. Swan has him well and truly covered for durability though.

Skills-wise I'd take Daics over everyone I've seen, by a big margin. It was like he was playing with a round ball, whilst everyone else was stuck with this stupid unpredictable oval shaped thing, but physically he wasn't much chop, with the exception of the vastly underrated balance.

People remember daicos the forward pocket, daicos the midfielder was devastating. Twice topped our goal kicking list as a ruck rover that rested at half forward with 76 and 58 goals, how many midfielders get that sort of return. Saved our arse in a final against north kicking 6 in a quarter, same year kicked 9 in a game twice all while playing as a ruck rover. After having effectively 2 years out with foot and knee injuries came back won the copland, made the vfl team of the year and represented victoria, as a midfielder.

He was moved to forward pocket after the game had got to fast for him to play midfield, but never underestimate how good a midfielder he was in his prime.

...and I'd have played 700 games if I was good at football and I got drafted when I was 4.

Really? This isn't a case of whether or not Daicos was as good as Swan in the midfield, he clearly was if you'd ever seen him play there. It's a matter of his durability, and that was my point given I was responding to the assertation that Swan is a class or two above what Daicos was.

If you think that Swan is indeed better than Daics was, then state your case instead of being a f****** smartarse.

Yeah the Swan / Daics comparison is a bit much. Swanny and Bucks I can live with because they were both ball magnets and 70m players who carried us for years on the back of their possessions. Daics is another level up for mine. An elite midfielder in his youth cut down by injury and then re-invents himself as the most dangerous small forward of all time....nah Daics has 'em both covered.

Swanny is still underrated for mine though because he's not only played that elite footy for so long but he's also entertained both supporters and team mates alike for a decade or more. He's loved because we all identify with his sense of humour and his love of a good time. Swanny has a touch of the Lou Richards about him and those sorts of blokes are just "worth their weight in gold" around footy clubs.

Swanny on the Footy Show......."I owe Collingwood more than they owe me"

I love this bloke. Collingwood through & through :thumbsu:

He played as a half forward flanker in those years. Before injuries, he'd just moved into being a primary midfielder and I think he would have been the best ever if he had have been fit, but alas it didn't happen. He was an amazing forward who had the potential to be a great midfielder.

Daicos played 249 games. Not that many behind Swan.

Daics started as a 17 year old and Swanny didn't really start playing regular senior footy until he was 22. Swanny definitely has durability over Daics.
