If we match the offer, he automatically becomes a player that must be traded for. Right?

Does that not enable us to listen to other trade offers? (from those with more ammunition).

I know at the end of the day Danger has to agree to go there, but it does place more pressure on Geelong to come up with something reasonable.

Same as every other out of contract player, we can listen to other offers but the player will chose a club and a deal would have to get done, likely in their favour or he goes into the PSD.

It is all in favour of the player, any one can go anywhere they like, which almost makes free agency pointless, as it is it only helps the club gaining the player.

Question for anyone listening to 5AA. Rowey keeps going on about one solution would be a window where all Free Agents announce their plans during the year to stop speculation and whatever else. Isn't this the window?

Al Green likes this.

The window that is.

Yes thats true but as you say, if he won't agree to go anywhere else then we still don't have much power, UNLESS a club like Carlton or Melbourne make it clear they'll pick him up in the PSD. This is what could force Geelong's hand to satisfy us more with a trade.

Interesting that he wants to go to Melbourne??? Surely if it was Geelong he would have said Geelong !!! Things are starting to hot up. Maybe the money will talk.

Yeah if he gets a massive offer we can't match we're screwed. Compo pick only. Yuk.

I would think any Victorian club would be crazy if they weren't interested in Dangerfield at 800k a year.

Does anyone really think that Dangerfield would seriously threaten to retire if he doesn't end getting drafted to Geelong ?

Melbourne, Carlton (without Judd and Henderson) and St Kilda would have more than enough cap space available for him and would be crazy if they weren't interested in him.

Someone's got unmatchable cash to offer haven't they...

Or is that "return to Victoria" wording purely to avoid an integrity unit investigation?

#donedeal #stitchedup

Sometimes in life there comes a time when you do things out of principle even if it disadvantages you to a point. For AFC, this is that time. We should match even if it means that he ends up going to the draft and we get nothing for him.

At some point, you need to make a stance. This is that time. People laughed at Port Adelaide when they flat out refused to trade Nick Stevens to Collingwood but guess what, that moment right there set the tone for years to come. You no longer see players threatening Port Adelaide, at best they stay or at worst, they politely request a trade.

This is one of those times when we should be brave enough to step up to the plate and match regardless of what the final outcome is. If it means we forego pick 14 or whatever the compensation pick would be, and lose him to the draft for nothing, then so be it. Next time this sort of situation arises again, the player in question will think twice.

Port lost plenty of players after nick Stevens.

And Port were completely unreasonable in their trade demands. They wanted Alan Didak and a 1st

Port is the last model we should aspire to

Frank Costa apparently thinks AFC matching the offer is outside the spirit of the RFA agreement

See - pissing off the Cats president -
There's always a silver lining :D:D:D

So matching the offer is against the spirit of RFA, but offering well under market value for a RFA isn't against the spirit ?

What a moron.

Hilarious if he ends up in the draft !:D

Danger at Carlton is no threat to anyone.

Danger going to Geelong does not mean our team will rot, nor does it mean Geelong will suddenly go back to their form from 07-11. Walker and Sloane will lead the way and with plenty of exciting youth beginning to blossom, there are bright days to come. Fear not Crows fans, for we are on the up whilst Danger jumps to a ship that is sinking fast.

Sorry you had to go Danger and thank you for the memories, but similar to Hawthorn after Buddy left them , we'll be fine without you.

Could not agree more.:thumbsu:

Trouble is, there has been no offer yet. Until Oct 9, interest from other clubs just puts pressure on Geelong to price them out. Unfortunately, the bigger Geelong's offer, the less 'hand' we have in trade negotiations because the threat of the PSD is undermined. Lower clubs will pass if the price is too high. At least, that's how I see it.

Isn't the compo pick partly calculated on the deal the player leaves on? Amount and length ect.

Whatever offer Dangerfield signs, it's going to be one that puts compensation in the top category. The problem with that, is that the top category only gives us a first round pick directly after our pick.

The big difference with when Judd and Buddy left their teams, is that they had already had success and had the depth to cover. We've got cloggy plodders like the two blonde 400kays

Not sure I understand this line of thinking. You did see the last round of the home and away season yeah?

Sure I guess you're going to say these things to make yourselves feel better, I was a bit miffed when Gaz left, but don't be too surprised if it doesn't turn out that way.

Yep...
Saw the week before that ...

and the week before that too.
