Same as every other out of contract player, we can listen to other offers but the player will chose a club and a deal would have to get done, likely in their favour or he goes into the PSD.

It is all in favour of the player, any one can go anywhere they like, which almost makes free agency pointless, as it is it only helps the club gaining the player.

Yes thats true but as you say, if he won't agree to go anywhere else then we still don't have much power, UNLESS a club like Carlton or Melbourne make it clear they'll pick him up in the PSD. This is what could force Geelong's hand to satisfy us more with a trade.

I would think any Victorian club would be crazy if they weren't interested in Dangerfield at 800k a year.

Melbourne, Carlton (without Judd and Henderson) and St Kilda would have more than enough cap space available for him and would be crazy if they weren't interested in him.

Sometimes in life there comes a time when you do things out of principle even if it disadvantages you to a point. For AFC, this is that time. We should match even if it means that he ends up going to the draft and we get nothing for him.

At some point, you need to make a stance. This is that time. People laughed at Port Adelaide when they flat out refused to trade Nick Stevens to Collingwood but guess what, that moment right there set the tone for years to come. You no longer see players threatening Port Adelaide, at best they stay or at worst, they politely request a trade.

This is one of those times when we should be brave enough to step up to the plate and match regardless of what the final outcome is. If it means we forego pick 14 or whatever the compensation pick would be, and lose him to the draft for nothing, then so be it. Next time this sort of situation arises again, the player in question will think twice.

Danger going to Geelong does not mean our team will rot, nor does it mean Geelong will suddenly go back to their form from 07-11. Walker and Sloane will lead the way and with plenty of exciting youth beginning to blossom, there are bright days to come. Trouble is, there has been no offer yet. Until Oct 9, interest from other clubs just puts pressure on Geelong to price them out. Unfortunately, the bigger Geelong's offer, the less 'hand' we have in trade negotiations because the threat of the PSD is undermined. Lower clubs will pass if the price is too high. At least, that's how I see it.

Whatever offer Dangerfield signs, it's going to be one that puts compensation in the top category. The problem with that, is that the top category only gives us a first round pick directly after our pick.
