My Cousin played for North Melbourne and they paid for his Pilot training so he could do crop dusting and even though he's been delisted now North are still paying for the rest of the training to become a commercial pilot. Something along the lines of he was so unlucky with injuries he got in which he couldn't control (eg Shoulder reconstruction from an opposition tackle, metal plates in his face from an opposition Spoil gone wrong, broken Collarbone from trying to take a hanger and being 'tunnelled' they felt bad cos he should of made it. If I'm being honest the Sub rule ruined his career.
Who is your cousin? if you don't mind me asking.

Maybe this is being petty, but did anyone else find all the talk about Dangerfield wearing 32 at Geelong a tad disrespectful ?

It's one of our legacy numbers, the number was passed on to him by Roo as an ultimate mark of respect. While Danger has worn it, it will always be Roo's number.

Maybe I am too touchy about it, but I just think that walking out of the club is disrespectful enough, but to leave and take the number 32 with you to your new club would be a massive slap in the face to the supporters.

Apparently according to Chris Scott it's different because poor little Patty really actually tried his best this year…oh and Mardi and Patty really need to go home for personal reasons cos maybe having one kid while earning a million bucks is just such an emotional compelling hardship that we should just roll over for him.

Yeah right…I'm sick of the narcissistic, egotistical millionaire with his silver spoon and all his millionaire buddies sprouting such crap in the media.

FAGAN…DO NOT ROLL OVER.

Once we match this is just like any other trade of an uncontracted star, no more no less.
I was thinking the same thing. Personal reasons, the guy makes so much money he could have a full time Nanny. Was always going to do this to us he just played us the corporate way .... by not saying anything

Probably wants it because the dickhead has the number 32 in his Twitter/Instagram usernames. Can't see Motlop wanting to hand it over that easily!

if Melbourne have the cash to pay him 1.2 Mil a season and he decides on MONEY rather than HOME are we still in a position to match that? probably not... then we are stuck with the compo... or if we cant work out a trade with Geelong do Melbourne offer us something so they don't have to wait on Carlton or Brisbane not selecting him in the pre season draft?

I would have thought if we match he is just considered an Uncontracted player and we start the trade negotiations with all teams. With stuff all time to do it.

I posted this in the Geelong thread ... with some tweaking from the discussions since ... use the "Value Index" that they will use for father/son and academy players for Free Agents.

A simple formula that uses age / games played / contract value / etc ... to put a point value on a player - then give a 20% discount for Free agents. Make the following year's picks the same as this year's picks (ie first round pick this year is the same value as the first round pick next year). Teams have to use the lowest available picks from the next two years first.

I don't think subjective things like AA or Brownlow medals or team stuff like Premierships should be included in the formula.

This will give a base that the receiving club has to pay for a player - and that "payment" should go to the club that is losing the player.

The two clubs can trade players instead of picks - but the base compensation is determined by the points - as would be reverted to if a trade could not satisfy the club losing the player.

What the new team is paying the FA or what length contract they are on is not relevant.

For instance:
  • PD is valued at 4000 points
  • Geelong want him - so with the 20% FA discount - they need to come up with 3600 points
  • The base payment would be - 2015 Pick 9 (1469) + 1st Round 2016 (1469) + 2015 Pick 27 (703) = 3641 points
  • Adelaide can say immediately they do not want to trade, and Geelong must hand over those picks immediately BEFORE the normal Trade Period begins
  • OR Adelaide agree to trade with Geelong = 2015 Pick 9 (1469) + 2nd Round 2016 (703) + Corey Gregson

Would that work?

It might work, but there is an arithmetical hitch with your calculations.
4000 - 20% of 4000 = 3200

Paddy doesn't give a rats about the supporters, most of them don't. We're just the mugs who pay their lofty salaries.

Someone mentioned that the other day and it was conveniently ignored. I believe they changes their recruitment strategy after losing Judd at the peak of his career. We should surely now do the same.
Since we get shafted in father/sons and basically everything else, maybe interstate clubs should get one chance at dibs on local talent. Nominate an SA kid to use our first rounder on before the draft so that they can't get pinched by the Melbournes and the Carltons.

I've said a few times they need to let every club run an academy and allow clubs to place dibs on players the same way Sydney do.

Get clubs feeling like clubs again, imagine having players come through a Crows U16's side, into the SANFL side in lieu of top up players and getting to select your best player with your first pick in the draft.

Everyone gets an opportunity to reap what they sow, and the standard of player will go up around the country.

All of this could have been avoided if Dangerfield was rightly handed the captaincy at the start of the season. The bloke has leadership written all over him with how he performs on the field and is rather media savvy off the field. He would have been perfect. It may have planted the seed for the situation we have today. Much harder to leave a club if you are captain.

I know Griffen will be brought up. The dogs were a basket case when he left, you guys are not, you are on the right track. He would have been a captain that had led his team to a semi against all the odds of what occurred this season. Very hard to walk away from.
No. Danger made up his mind last year
