Seems most people are outraged that a convicted criminal is allowed to go on a TV program. Some polls I have seen show that 66% of people think Channel 9 should have chopped him from the show. It seems most people's reasoning is that a convicted criminal doesn't deserve to have a good job, or even 15 minutes of fame.
There used to be a thread titled 'Are most people stupid?'. Judging by the average person's logic shown on this issue, I'd have to agree. People who think that a person must continue to pay for a crime after they have served their time are inherently stupid. Jail is as much about rehabilitation than punishment.
Here's just a few points for people to weigh up:
1) Punishing a people for the rest of their lives will not prevent crime. There is no evidence that it will even reduce crime either.
2) This is the one that really astounds me: If we give the message out that if people are to commit crimes then they will never be able to get good jobs, if a job at all. We may as well just say to them, "Hey look buddy, you'd be better of staying in crime because you ain't getting a decent straight job". Hardly rehabilitation and hardly the thinking of a non-stupid person.
