Deserves a premiership medal. Will give him my U14 WJFA if it comes to that.

Too many people are focusing on the negatives. Yes, its a terrible set of events that Dan has had to endure over the last 18 months or so, but surely if he can stay positive so can we.

The positives I took from that was that he's been given the all clear and he's back to running now.

And I can understand the club keeping this quiet, at least in the short term. While we can all applaud Dan for his attitude throughout this, I'm sure he's been equally scared and frustrated behind closed doors. Any medical professional will tell you that a patient's mental state can affect the healing process. The club were just making sure that Dan was in the right head space first.

I can't. What is this - Soviet Russia? It's so childish the secrecy that footy clubs routinely engage in. What's so difficult about saying "well he's having another operation"?
As fans its easy to be critical of the clubs when they don't fully disclose all information immediately, but the clubs duty of care needs to be focused on its players and what is in their best interest.
As the article states, initially they weren't sure what they were dealing with and then when Dan was told he would need another reco he said he needed time to deal with the situation privately before the news became public; so it seems here it was the player asking for a delay in the release of information rather than the club just trying to keep things under wrap.
If Dan asked the club to delay the release of the news but they turned around and said, "can't do that, going to release a statement about the situation", how do you think Dan would feel or any player put in that situation? We may not like the delay in the release of the news, but I would rather the club follow the request of its players and put them first in appropriate situations, than risk losing their trust just to appease the fans thirst for news.

LARS worked well for his brother. Cant be any worse then his natural "rubber band" ligaments. Time to start rolling some dice and getting him on the field, regular ACL surgery is obviously failing him.

We should send menz to Germany

As for balme Julia has him earmarked for minister for defence
With Neil's track record with injury updates would have thought Health minister would have been more his go

:(

Just so sad now

:(

The kid had so much talent and should had a 2011 medal hanging round his neck.

Not looking good for his carrer 3 reco is very very serious.

It is not humanly possible for me to agree with this sentiment more! Well said.

Well, he still has a way to go to beat my run of luck since new year's  = $%&*#@!!! x 10.
But who's complaining... There's greater satisfaction in fighting against the odds and beating them.
GO MENZ!.... and GO CATS!

I personally feel the fat man does a great job of disguising the facts, in the better interests of both club and player - Kudos Balmey ;)

I don't know whether or not Balme's usual obfuscation serves any useful purpose, but he certainly did the right thing in this case.
And the kid is saying VFL Rd 1, which ties in with the oft-quoted Lars 3 months' recovery time, so we can only hope things go to schedule.
He deserves a bit of a break.

In fairness to Balme he did report this on SEN a few weeks ago, so not really a cover up.

Very unfortunate for the lad, LARS seems the only option.

Curious to me he was doing tackling drills before Xmas.

Best thing about this news is there is hope. Some people live their lives hoping to make it to the top. Very few ever do. Daniel is there and to be so close yet so far must be just frustrating and exhilarating all at once.

I'm sure he didn't want to be front page news and completly get the cloak and dagger with the news. At the end of the day who really wants their medical history all over the news.... Again...

Best of luck to Dan the player - but more importantly Daniel the person with whatever happens over te next few months. Either way, the cheer from the crowd next time he is on the ground for any purpose will be deafening..
There are many riding the bumps with you!

Go Denzel and go Catters...

I
Surprised at the support for Balme here. It was deceit with no apparent benefit not to mention in December that it was LARS.

It's getting to the stage where I will simply ignore everything Balme says.
I get the subdefuge in season... Keep the injury cards close to the chest and make players prepare for different scenarios... Off field chess or just bs....

Off season injuries can be a bit less information critical perhaps but he just wanted some time to absorb it himself ....
Go Catters

No-one is supporting Balme, they are supporting Dans wish to keep it private so he could mentally deal with the setback. Balme was just doing what his player wanted.

Really hope this works out, and I'm glad he can be fit on the park so quickly.

When he gets back to the ones we're going to be cheering so hard for him that the collective breath will cause him to fall and break his knee.

Edit: I see the original source is the HS article where it mentions this. I was reading the GFC website where it makes no mention of it. Cheers.

I've re-read the article and can't see anything about "Dans wish to keep it private so he could mentally deal with the setback". Was there a reference to that somewhere or is it just speculation?

I didnt read the article quoted in the op (I read one on the net elsewhere) but it was quoted from Dan in that article that he wished to keep it private for those reasons.

This one will do:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/afl/mor...-save-his-career/story-e6frf9jf-1226565389734

"The reason for the secrecy initially was that Menzel wasn't sure whether he needed another reconstruction.

He then wanted to deal with his grief privately as he steeled himself for yet another rehabilitation program, albeit three months instead of the regulation nine."

Seems we both edited at the same time :P

Yes, it was in the 2 newspaper articles from which the website took a shortened extract.

Ok heres my thinking, firstly I think Dan is still a shot to get back into the AFL team, he will not hit the heights he was promising but he could make a decent enough half forward and secondly I think the MC need to push him a little this year, theres no point holding back and holding back and having the knee go bang in 12 months time, lets get him right, give him a few games then a decent run and if it goes, well it goes.

Not sure why people are bagging Balme in this instance ? He said on SEN 2 weeks ago that Dan had partially torn the repaired graft and had a Lars procedure to correct this which should not affect his comeback date too drastically. All of this has been written in the article, so maybe the Herald sun should retract its exclusive statement and realise they are slow on the uptake

While the herald sun is at it with retracting the "exclusive" statement from their article, is there any chance the AFL can change the opening statement on theirs?
AFTER two failed knee reconstructions, Geelong forward Daniel Menzel has turned to LARS surgery in a bid to revive his career.
How has he had 2 failed knee recos? He had a reco on his right knee in 2011 and from everything reported has had no troubles with that since, while he had a partial tear in the repaired left knee but doesn't sound like it completely tore again. So maybe a 50% or 75% failure in 1 one of the reconstructions, but not sure you can be stating he has had 2 failed knee recos when he hasn't had to have both knees each go through another reconstruction.

Also people on here are very quick to write off Menzel's career. Not sure multiple reco's has affected Rodan's or Malceski's career too much. Alot has changed from the days when David Schwarz had 3 reco's and it should be remembered that even he still had quite a good career. Even Max Bailey has had 3 reco's and has come back to play decent football. I see no reason why Menzel cannot return to the form he was showing prior to his operations. Heck anyone who saw the brief 1½ qurters he played in the VFL before going down with his other knee, would have seen the magic is still there
