I was talking to another of our posters the other day and i made the call that if Daniel Rich was drafted by the Swans would he be playing in Canberra. He agreed and said probably and so would Stephen Hill.
Roos has come out this week and said you need another level of fitness coming up from the Canberra comp, so they are now acknowledging that there is a problem. I am interested in others thoughts on this. ( and this is not a anti canberra thread )

Roos has never been keen on playing kids the year after they get drafted (Craig Bird being the recent exception). I don't think it has much to do with Canberra but more to do with Roos who seems to dislike playing the kids.

As stated Bird is the only recent draftee that has played in his first year.

As you state Bedford, this is not anti Canberra, and I will (and have previously agreed with you) that the skill level in ACTAFL isn't up to VFL, SANFL or WAFL, but the fitness levels needed to play in these leagues would not the sole reason that they are better, a lot of the players would be nearly full time. No one else in the Canberra league is fully professional besides the Swans.

How is it that guys that only play in the seniors (for the Swans) have the right fitness levels but the guys playing in the twos don't? Might have something to do with how they train? Not sure but to lay the blame of not enough fitness on the supporting league is a bit Rich (Pardon the Pun:D)

Haha.. Ok Bedders I'll bite.

Vezspremi... lost 1st p/season, groin trouble.. when fit.. IN and stayed there! next LTI..then IN

Meredith... inj last yr but soon as ready ...IN.. now LTI

Johnston... Roos has lamented that he was unavailable (LTI) and he wanted to play him..this year!!!

I applaud the reward in the principle of newbies having to prove themselves better than established experienced players.

OK... Rich was a touted potential #1pick, Hill was #3..... Palmer was#7... what good has the last two got out of being asked at young age to carry ol' limp dicks at Freo?

But your agenda is ressies;)...sure ACTAFL simply doesn't have semi or fulltime professionals training all week like SANFL WAFL or VFL.. playing games against many ex AFL players so of course.... Roos is spot on!

Rich (if we had him) likely would play if good enough!...any further assistance to your muzin discussions ..apply herein:D:thumbsu:

He would of said the same thing if we were playing in an AFL Reserves competition still or the VFL still. This isn't a direct knock on the level of competition in Canberra by Roos, but the simple truth that he believes that a 1st Year player needs to have a certain level of fitness, both base and match wise before the club even thinks about playing them in the Senior side.

That has always been the case with Roos and will still be the case regardless of the competition our reserves play in. So yes maybe the players you named such as Daniel Rich would of started the year in Canberra to prove their the fitness before getting a call to the seniors fairly quickly.

The interesting thing is with Rich is that he was playing senior footy last year in the WAFL.
With the draft being comprimised in the next few years maybe we should be looking at mature age recruits in the various State League competitions.
To Corps i didn't want anybody to bite, but i thought it would be an interesting discussion point for this board.
I also found it strange what Roosy said about the fitness levels, one for the road .by the way hows the young fella going

Nice theory, but there have been more than enough examples to invalidate it. Corps has already pointed out a few and I'd like to add Moore and Phillips as further examples of 1st year players getting a game in their debut year. It shows that if you're good enough, the Swans are not afraid to play you.

does not compute

I was/am a big fan of Phillips, he was the goal sneak we had been crying out for for years. However, as I've stated on this site before, he was strangely not used in the same position he was playing in the reserves - playing further up the ground. From what I saw, what Phillips did in his 2 years is a whole lot of more than what O'Dwyer, Brabazon or Thornton have done.

Had a good game on Wednesday at the dome.
Has got a bit of a crook ankle which hasn't helped in some of the earlier games and it is just starting to come good, rest is what it really needs but not this year.
Been playing in the seniors when not for the Rams, so who knows Bedford, its now in the hands of the recruiters and open for discussion on these intelligent boards :D.

:confused:WTF?

I have obviously missed a cryptic clue? Who are you both talking about?

Don't worry, I'm not embarassed by ...shame or ignorance !(or visa versa)

We all hope:D.
Done all he can at 18's level, now a few good games in the shit canberra league (one really good one against the Swans wouldn't hurt) and we will see what happens.
Nah, the Swans are shit, anyone worth their salt could beat em :D

Any thoughts on Dylan McNeil, kicked 4 the other day, also won the Harrison medal and was at draft camp. He's also played once for the Swans reserves this year and starred. I wonder why he isn't a scholarship player?

Same as Jeremy and others South of the imaginary line. NOT eligible.
Very good player is Dylan, have watched him for the last 4 years (from under 15 schoolboys).
Will get taken this year no doubt, is good in and under and can be a link player, does know where the goals are too.

With the game he had on Wednesday will have pushed him up a bit, but me thinks he will be late 2nd round or 3rd so it is a possibility for the Swans to pick him up.
I am talking about Dylan

Any other possible pickups from the NSW/ACT team in your opinion? Besides the scholarship players like Stubbs and Langford who both look likely to be picked up by the Hawks.

Its a bit hard because a lot of the boys are already tied via the scholarships.
Out of the side that played on Wednesday:
McNeil, Jason Tutt and maybe Hamilton, Sargent and Liam Johnson.
I think McNeil will go in the ND and all others would be rookied.
Just checked the side only 10 of the 22 are not scholarshipped.
