Uncontracted players don't just automatically become the "property" of GWS. The player has a choice in the matter, and has to want/agree to go there and sign a contract with GWS. Because Rich may be uncontracted at the end of the year he could go to GWS if he wished, or ask to be traded to WCE or elsewhere. If Brisbane wouldn't do a requested trade, and he didn't want to go to GWS, he would end up in the draft or pre-season draft.

Exactly. He has to agree to a contract with GWS. They don't just own him cause he is uncontracted.

1) If he does not re-sign with Brisbane and chooses to go to GWS, then Brisbane get a compensation pick at end of first round.

2) If he does not re-sign with Brisbane and requests a trade back home, then Brisbane and WCE (most likely) will broker a deal that would see them receive a pick and/or a player. A package that is likely to be more attractive than the compensation pick they would receive from GWS.

3) If he does not re-sign with Brisbane or GWS and Brisbane refuse to trade, then he will dominate for ND or PSD (of course depending on the placement of picks of WA teams, more importantly WCE). Brisbane get nothing for him.

Rich would ultimately choose WCE over Freo as he was/is an avid eagles supporter and will be pushing for a trade to WCE. Brisbane overlooking him for the leadership group pretty much confirms he is not part of their future plans.

We have the leverage because we should have the picks/player in the right range to offer a package to Brisbane better than GWS without paying over the odds.

If Brisbane want to play hardball and lose him for nothing then as bodazoka said, the entire trading department should be sacked immediately.

All we have to worry about is Freo trying to hijack the deal.

This is of course all under the assumption he wants to come home and doesn't re-sign. :D

Nice analysis AM. We are Brisbane's best option.

What team in a couple of years.

Gee how great would it be to have rich. Just the class by foot would be a huge positive for us. On a side note nick lower, jarrad irons and andrew krakeour in my dream team has been pretty damned good.

+1.
Brisbane were very unlucky tonight. Should have beaten the Dorkers.

Looks like Staker did his knee tonight. Bad luck for him cause he'd been playing well.

When the chips were down in the last I was expecting him to stand up, win some centre clearances, push his team forward like he did in the Carlton final a few years ago. Nothing.

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan but his game last night was not as good as people are making out.

The mail I've been getting is that Dan is more than happy at Brisbane (from his old friends in Perth) but I suppose only Dan really knows.

Unless GWS offers him huge money (even then he's likely to turn it down I would suspect), the only two possibilities is either he stays at Brisbane or comes to West Coast. I can't see him going to a third state.

RE: The mail from Rich's friends. As you said only Rich really knows, he won't go around telling his mates he is coming home as that is something you simply don't advertise.

IMO after last weekend the Lions are gone for the year. They lost two of their most important players in Brown and Staker, Staker was playing a great game and looked very, very good. They will be smashed this week by the wounded Dogs in Melbourne and have 8 > 10 weeks without their inspirational skipper and the best CHF in the game.

Another disaster year will see the Lions finish bottom 2, Voss will get sacked and the negative fall out from another poor year could play heavily in Rich's mind.

Hopefully the Eagles will show promise, win a couple of games they weren't expected to and start their climb back up the ladder. Rich was an Eagles fan and his father would love him back in WA in blue and yellow.

Well brisbane were my tip for the spoon. I was regretting it until brown got injured. I think staker is a bigger loss than people think aswell.

I'm hoping that Carlton keep playing Yarran in defence (and drop him due to lack of form back there!). Opens up the possibility he may want to come home sometime? No idea what his contactual situation is.

But he'd be a good fit for our forward line, would enable Le Cras to play more midfield.

Has Yarran actually ever had a game worthy of the faith that people have in him?

I know he has kicked a couple of goals in games where Carlton has dominated but other then that...

Agree.

Yarran strikes me as one of those kids who dominated in juniors based on skill plus an air of intimidation (you come near me then me and the boys will smash you behind the sheds after the game). He's had everyone telling him how good a player he is at junior level and never needed to work his ar$e off to play well.

Then he gets drafted. No mates backing him up after the game, opposition doesn't care who he is, everyone is much bigger than him and he doesn't work hard enough on or off the field. It almost seems he is waiting for his natural skills and flair to work at AFL level.

More than happy for his trade value to drop as no way would I consider a 1st round pick a fair trade from what he has shown.

Yarran played an average game and then gets written off as an AFL player. Geez bit rough, indigenous boys find consistency hard at the start of their career. Aaron Davey has only started to become a consistent player in the past few years. Give him some time, he will come on.

What are you basing this on?

I am guessing personal experiences.

I based this comment on several things I have read and yes personal experience, not that I've ever met Yarran.

It's been reported that Yarran had a run in with the law pre getting drafted and that it was a good career move him getting drafted interstate away from several 'aquaintances'.

Voss reported on the trip to South Africa he dropped a pick pocket and someone else reported he was a pretty decent boxer.

He was mates with NickNat and Walters and I'd suggest its a fair chance their would have been quite a few 'groupies' hanging around these guys, most likely the 'aquaintances' referred to earlier.

Up here in Darwin we see it all the time, the young indigenous footy stars have a lot of 'footy mates' and family who build up their ego's and go out of their way to impress them and 'look after them' so to speak.

I'm sure I'll get a few "geez your drawing a long bow" and "you shouldn't generalise" etc but thats how life is from where I sit.
